Examining Bacteriophage Reliance on the TolA Protein of Escherichia coli

With the ever-growing crisis of antibiotic resistant bacteria, bacteriophage provide an important potential alternative therapy to treat infections when antibiotics are ineffective. For this reason, it is important to understand the mechanisms bacteriophage use to enter their bacterial host cell. The cellular envelope of the gram-negative bacterium E. coli contains a protein system known as Tol-Pal, which utilizes energy from the Proton Motive Force to carry out several cellular functions, including some associated with cellular division and outer-membrane stability. Certain bacteriophage take advantage of the energy produced by this system to cross the bacterial cell membrane. One important protein of the Tol-Pal system is TolA, which may be utilized as a bacteriophage receptor. This project sought to use genetically engineered strains of E. coli with deletions of the gene associated with the production of the TolA protein to identify bacteriophage which seem to be TolA reliant. Throughout the course of this project, several bacteriophage were identified which seemed to be inhibited by the deletion of the TolA gene, although their ability to lyse the bacterial cell was not entirely lost. This may indicate that certain bacteriophage within the population of TolA reliant phage developed a gain-of-function mutation which allowed them to utilize an alternative receptor to enter the host cell

The influence of Spenser\u27s Irish residence on the Faerie queene.

The departure of Spenser for Ireland in 1580 as secretary to Lord Grey of Wilton, newly appointed Lord Deputy of Ireland, marks a significant point in the poet\u27s career. Save for occasional trips to England, the remaining years of his life Spenser spent in this salvage land , among a hostile and turbulent people, far from the brilliance of English court life and Elisa\u27s blessed fields. The appointment to service in Ireland seems to have been a disappointment to the poet who had shortly before thought himself assured of an official career in England under the patronage of Leicester. In October of the preceding year he had expected to be sent on a foreign mission in his Honour\u27s service but the trip seems never to have taken place. Written later from Ireland, Virgil\u27s Gnat shows the hurt and disappointed poet bemoaning his banishment which he attributes to a well-meant but resented warning to Leicester, probably Mother Hubbards Tale

Identification of Multicultural Nutrition Counseling Competencies for Registered Dietitians

Objective: Research was conducted to develop a model and identify multicultural nutrition counseling competencies for Registered Dietitians Design: A mail survey was administered followed by a post card reminder and a follow-up survey to non-respondents. The survey consisted of 46 competency items that subjects rated on a Likert scale of 1 to 7 (1=Unessential to 7 -Essential). Subjects: A stratified random sample was taken from 1300 members of the American Dietetic Association\u27s Public Health Nutrition Practice Group and directors of the Didactic Programs in Dietetics (DPD) and Dietetic Internship (DI) Programs. A total of 604 subjects were selected and mailed surveys. Surveys completed by Registered Dietitians who were members of the practice group or directors of a DPD or DI program were used for data analysis. Statistical Analysis: Descriptive statistics were used to calculate frequency of response. Exploratory principal component analysis was used to analyze the dimensionality of the multicultural nutrition counseling competencies. MANOVA was used to determine if dimensions extracted differed among respondents who provided nutrition counseling or education to culturally different clients and those who did not. Results: Of the 604 subjects surveyed, 60% responded (n=363) and of the respondents, 94.4% (n=343) met the selection criteria. Most respondents were Caucasian (86%), spoke English as their primary language (97%), and had Master\u27s degrees (82%). Many (38.2%) worked in a community/public health facility or organization and 50% provided nutrition counseling or education to culturally different clients. Three dimensions were extracted with 28 competencies loading on them: Multicultural Nutrition Counseling Skills, Multicultural Awareness, and Multicultural Food and Nutrition Knowledge. Subjects responded similarly for the extracted dimensions regardless of whether or not they provided nutrition counseling to culturally different clients. Application: It is imperative for Registered Dietitians who work with various cultural groups to be multi-culturally competent, given the changing and dynamic nature of our society. The resulting multicultural nutrition counseling model is a guideline, which can be applied to many aspects of the dietetic profession. The American Dietetic Association\u27s Diversity Committee should review the model to determine how the competencies fit into the committee\u27s objectives. Directors of Didactic Programs in Dietetics and Dietetic Internship Programs may want to focus on some of the competencies to enhance dietetic education and training. Public health nutritionists may use them as a basis for selecting continuing education opportunities to enhance their multicultural nutrition counseling competence. Additional research is recommended to further develop and define multicultural nutrition counseling competencies for Registered Dietitians

Title of poster session: I Want That! Letting Patrons Request On-Order Materials Booth Library at Eastern Illinois University has traditionally displayed bibliographic records in its online catalog for materials that are in the acquisition and cataloging process, resulting in patrons often discovering desirable materials that are not yet available. To speed these materials through the acquisition and cataloging processes and into the hands of eager users, we designed a web link in each bibliographic record that patrons can use to request notification when the item is available for use. The technology is simple, the workflow manageable, and the good will generated is gratifying
