Joint resummation in electroweak boson production
We present a phenomenological application of the joint resummation formalism
to electroweak annihilation processes at measured boson momentum Q_T. This
formalism simultaneously resums at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy large
threshold and recoil corrections to partonic scattering. We invert the impact
parameter transform using a previously described analytic continuation
procedure. This leads to a well-defined, resummed perturbative cross section
for all nonzero Q_T, which can be compared to resummation carried out directly
in Q_T space. From the structure of the resummed expressions, we also determine
the form of nonperturbative corrections to the cross section and implement
these into our analysis. We obtain a good description of the transverse
momentum distribution of Z bosons produced at the Tevatron collider.Comment: 27 pages, LaTeX, 8 figures as eps files. Some additions to earlier

Vacuum effects in an asymptotically uniformly accelerated frame with a constant magnetic field
In the present article we solve the Dirac-Pauli and Klein Gordon equations in
an asymptotically uniformly accelerated frame when a constant magnetic field is
present. We compute, via the Bogoliubov coefficients, the density of scalar and
spin 1/2 particles created. We discuss the role played by the magnetic field
and the thermal character of the spectrum.Comment: 17 pages. RevTe
A Hilbert Space Representation of Generalized Observables and Measurement Processes in the ESR Model
The extended semantic realism (ESR) model recently worked out by one of the
authors embodies the mathematical formalism of standard (Hilbert space) quantum
mechanics in a noncontextual framework, reinterpreting quantum probabilities as
conditional instead of absolute. We provide here a Hilbert space representation
of the generalized observables introduced by the ESR model that satisfy a
simple physical condition, propose a generalization of the projection
postulate, and suggest a possible mathematical description of the measurement
process in terms of evolution of the compound system made up of the measured
system and the measuring apparatus.Comment: 12 pages, Standard Latex, Minor revision
'I like this interview; I get cakes and cats!':the effect of prior relationships on interview talk
Research interviews are a form of interaction jointly constructed by the interviewer and interviewee, what Silverman (2001: 104) calls 'interview-as-local-accomplishment'. From this perspective, interviews are an interpretative practice in which what is said is inextricably tied to where it is said, how it is said and, importantly, to whom it is said (Holstein and Gubrium, 2004). The relationship between interviewer and interviewee, then, is fundamental in research interviews. But what happens when the relationship between interviewer and interviewee is not only that of researcher-informant but also involves other roles such as colleague and friend? In this article we will show how prior relationships are invoked and made relevant by both parties during educational research interviews and how these prior relationships therefore contribute to the 'generation' (Baker, 2004: 163) of interview data. © 2010 The Author(s)
Tourism communities and social ties: the role of online and offline tourist social networks in building social capital and sustainable practice.
Mobile connectivity enables the adoption of new ways to connect with social networks which are changing how we might, and could, seek support. In the tourism domain we increasingly
blend online and offline presence to engage with social networks in the spatial location, at a distance and across time. This paper explores the forms of community that exist in physical tourism contexts, contexts not previously analysed through a community lens, and explores how mobile technology is creating connections within and beyond existing social networks. It examines how sustainable tourism can be enhanced by mobile connectivity through new space-time practices and using ephemeral interpersonal relationships to harness niche groups to create bottom-up social systems interested in sharing experiences, ideas and resources. Special attention is given to the concept of gelling socialities which proposes a less ridged network structure, and to the need to understand the increasingly liquid social dynamics of mobile social interactions. The paper adds to the theories surrounding community, social ties and tourism’s value to society. It draws on data from in-depth interviews undertaken while
designing and testing a collaborative travel app. It contributes to growing research into the new technologies increasingly available for sustainable tourism marketing and
implementation
'Education, education, education' : legal, moral and clinical
This article brings together Professor Donald Nicolson's intellectual interest in professional legal ethics and his long-standing involvement with law clinics both as an advisor at the University of Cape Town and Director of the University of Bristol Law Clinic and the University of Strathclyde Law Clinic. In this article he looks at how legal education may help start this process of character development, arguing that the best means is through student involvement in voluntary law clinics. And here he builds upon his recent article which argues for voluntary, community service oriented law clinics over those which emphasise the education of students
Standardized Definitions of In Utero Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Antiretroviral Drug Exposure Among Children
In countries with high human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence, up to 30% of pregnant women are living with HIV, with fetal exposure to both HIV and antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy. In addition, pregnant women without HIV but at high risk of HIV acquisition are increasingly receiving HIV preexposure antiretroviral prophylaxis (PrEP). Investments are being made to establish and follow cohorts of children to evaluate the long-term effects of in utero HIV and antiretroviral exposure. Agreement on a key set of definitions for relevant exposures and outcomes is important both for interpreting individual study results and for comparisons across cohorts. Harmonized definitions of in utero HIV and antiretroviral drug (maternal treatment or PrEP) exposure will also facilitate improved classification of these exposures in future observational studies and clinical trials. The proposed definitions offer a uniform approach to facilitate the consistent description and estimation of effects of HIV and antiretroviral exposures on key child health outcomes
Measurement of the p-pbar -> Wgamma + X cross section at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV and WWgamma anomalous coupling limits
The WWgamma triple gauge boson coupling parameters are studied using p-pbar
-> l nu gamma + X (l = e,mu) events at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The data were
collected with the DO detector from an integrated luminosity of 162 pb^{-1}
delivered by the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The cross section times branching
fraction for p-pbar -> W(gamma) + X -> l nu gamma + X with E_T^{gamma} > 8 GeV
and Delta R_{l gamma} > 0.7 is 14.8 +/- 1.6 (stat) +/- 1.0 (syst) +/- 1.0 (lum)
pb. The one-dimensional 95% confidence level limits on anomalous couplings are
-0.88 < Delta kappa_{gamma} < 0.96 and -0.20 < lambda_{gamma} < 0.20.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. D Rapid Communication
Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using Kinematic Characteristics of Lepton + Jets Events
We present a measurement of the top quark pair ttbar production cross section
in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV using 230 pb**{-1}
of data collected by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We
select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon), large missing
transverse energy, and at least four jets, and extract the ttbar content of the
sample based on the kinematic characteristics of the events. For a top quark
mass of 175 GeV, we measure sigma(ttbar) = 6.7 {+1.4-1.3} (stat) {+1.6- 1.1}
(syst) +/-0.4 (lumi) pb, in good agreement with the standard model prediction.Comment: submitted to Phys.Rev.Let
Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV using Lepton + Jets Events with Lifetime b-tagging
We present a measurement of the top quark pair () production cross
section () in collisions at TeV
using 230 pb of data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab
Tevatron Collider. We select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon),
missing transverse energy, and jets in the final state. We employ
lifetime-based b-jet identification techniques to further enhance the
purity of the selected sample. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV, we
measure pb, in
agreement with the standard model expectation.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables Submitted to Phys.Rev.Let
