    White coat color of a Black Angus calf attributed to an occurrence of the delR217 variant of \u3ci\u3eMITF\u3c/i\u3e

    A white calf, with minimal pigmented markings, was born to two registered Black Angus parents. Given the possibility of an unknown recessive or de novo dominant mutation, whole-genome sequencing was conducted on the trio of individuals. A 3-bp in-frame deletion in MITF was identified; this mutation was unique to the calf but identical to the delR217 variant reported in both humans and murine models of Waardenburg syndrome type 2A and Tietz syndrome. Given the coat color phenotype and identity of the mutation, our data support that this calf represents the first instance of this recurring MITF mutation in cattle

    A 1.5-year-old second-parity Large Black X Tamworth cross sow from a well-managed 20-sow, unvaccinated, pasture-raised herd of pigs in upstate New York aborted a litter of 7 variably mummified near-term fetuses and stillborn piglets. This sow had no signs of ill health other than abortion; it was housed in a group with 4 other sows and a 2-year-old Gloucestershire Old Spot boar. One of the stillborn piglets from this litter was submitted to the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center for necropsy; no placental tissue was submitted with the piglet. A second sow from this group had aborted a litter at the same late stage of gestation within the preceding 2 weeks; however, none of the fetuses were submitted for diagnostic investigation. No signs of ill health were reported for the rest of the herd. The referring veterinarian indicated that these pigs had access to corn standing in the field and that, because of recent wet weather, there was concern that mycotoxin contamination might be the cause of the abortions

    Markers of Inflammation in Bacterial Diarrhea among Travelers, with a Focus on Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli Pathogenicity

    The intestinal inflammatory response of traveler's diarrhea acquired in Goa, India, and Guadalajara, Mexico, was studied. Fecal lactoferrin was found in stool samples in which enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC), enterotoxigenic E. coli, or Salmonella or Shigella species were isolated, with Shigella-positive cases showing the highest level. Samples from cases of Shigella-associated diarrhea had the highest concentrations of fecal cytokines. Travelers to India who had EAEC-associated diarrhea showed elevated levels of interleukin (IL)-8 (median, 341.15 pg/mL) and IL-1β (median, 749.90 pg/mL). Although 15 travelers to Mexico who had EAEC-associated diarrhea had a median concentration of 0 pg/mL for both IL-8 and IL-1β, 2 had high levels of IL-8 (1853 and 11,786 pg/mL), and 5 showed elevated levels of IL-1β (1-1240 pg/mL). Samples from patients in India who had pathogen-negative diarrhea or from patients in Mexico who had asymptomatic EAEC infection were negative for cytokines.     A Dynamical Mass Constraint for Pre-Main-Sequence Evolutionary Tracks: The Binary NTT 045251+3016

    We present an astrometric/spectroscopic orbital solution for the pre-main-sequence binary NTT 045251+3016. Our measurements for the primary and secondary masses are 1.45 +/- 0.19 M_sun and 0.81 +/- 0.09 M_sun, respectively, and 145 +/- 8 pc for the distance of the system, consistent with prior estimates for the Taurus-Auriga star-forming region. The evolutionary tracks of D'Antona & Mazzitelli (1997), Baraffe et al. (1998), and Palla & Stahler (1999) are tested against these dynamical mass measurements. Due to the intrinsic color/T_eff variation within the K5 spectral class, each pre-main-sequence model provides a mass range for the primary. The theoretical mass range derived from the Baraffe et al. (1998) tracks that use a mixing length parameter alpha=1.0 is closest to our measured primary mass, deviating between 1.3 and 1.6 sigma. The set of Baraffe et al. (1998) tracks that use alpha=1.9 deviate between 1.6 and 2.1 sigma from our measured primary mass. The mass range given by the Palla & Stahler (1999) tracks for the primary star deviate between 1.6 and 2.9 sigma. The D'Antona & Mazzitelli (1997) tracks give a mass range that deviates by at least 3.0 sigma from our derived primary mass, strongly suggesting that these tracks are inconsistent with our observation. Observations of the secondary are less constraining than those of the primary, but the deviations between the dynamical mass of the secondary and the mass inferred for the secondary from the various pre-main-sequence tracks mirror the deviations of the primary star.     Permanent pacemaker dependency in patients with new left bundle branch block and new first degree atrioventricular block after transcatheter aortic valve implantation

    Conduction disorders with need for permanent pacemaker (PPM) implantation remain frequent complications after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Up to 22% of PPM after TAVI are implanted for new onset left bundle branch block (LBBB) and atrioventricular block (AVB) I. However, clinical benefit and predictors of ventricular pacing in TAVI patients receiving PPM for this indication remain unclear. We retrospectively evaluated pacemaker interrogation data of patients who received a PPM post TAVI for new LBBB and new AVB I. The primary endpoint of this study was relevant ventricular pacing (ventricular pacing rate: Vp ≥ 1%) at the first outpatient pacemaker interrogation. Secondary endpoints were predictors for relevant ventricular pacing. At the first pacemaker interrogation (median follow up at 6.23 2.8-14.8 months), median ventricular pacing frequency was 1.0{\%} 0.1-17.8. Out of 61 patients, 36 (59{\%}) had Vp rates ≥ 1{\%}. Patients with frequent ventricular pacing showed longer QRS duration (155~ms ± 17~ms vs. 144~ms ± 18~ms, p = 0.018) at the time of PPM implantation and were less likely treated with a balloon-expandable Edwards Sapiens Valve (39{\%} vs. 12{\%}, p = 0.040). Our findings suggest that the majority of patients with new LBBB and new AVB I after TAVI show relevant ventricular pacing rates at follow up. Further prospective studies are necessary to identify patients at higher risk of pacemaker dependency

    Efficient one- and two-qubit pulsed gates for an oscillator stabilized Josephson qubit

    We present theoretical schemes for performing high-fidelity one- and two-qubit pulsed gates for a superconducting flux qubit. The "IBM qubit" consists of three Josephson junctions, three loops, and a superconducting transmission line. Assuming a fixed inductive qubit-qubit coupling, we show that the effective qubit-qubit interaction is tunable by changing the applied fluxes, and can be made negligible, allowing one to perform high fidelity single qubit gates. Our schemes are tailored to alleviate errors due to 1/f noise; we find gates with only 1% loss of fidelity due to this source, for pulse times in the range of 20-30ns for one-qubit gates (Z rotations, Hadamard), and 60ns for a two-qubit gate (controlled-Z). Our relaxation and dephasing time estimates indicate a comparable loss of fidelity from this source. The control of leakage plays an important role in the design of our shaped pulses, preventing shorter pulse times. However, we have found that imprecision in the control of the quantum phase plays the major role in the limitation of the fidelity of our gates.Comment: Published version. Added references.
