Analysing powers for the reaction and for np elastic scattering from 270 to 570 MeV
The analysing power of the reaction for neutron energies between threshold and 570 MeV has been determined
using a transversely polarised neutron beam at PSI. The reaction has been
studied in a kinematically complete measurement using a time-of-flight
spectrometer with large acceptance. Analysing powers have been determined as a
function of the c.m. pion angle in different regions of the proton-proton
invariant mass. They are compared to other data from the reactions and . The np elastic scattering analysing power was determined as a
by-product of the measurements.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, subitted to EPJ-
The reaction from threshold up to 570 MeV
The reaction has been studied in a
kinematically complete measurement with a large acceptance time-of-flight
spectrometer for incident neutron energies between threshold and 570 MeV. The
proton-proton invariant mass distributions show a strong enhancement due to the
pp() final state interaction. A large anisotropy was found in the
pion angular distributions in contrast to the reaction . At small energies, a large forward/backward asymmetry has been
observed. From the measured integrated cross section , the isoscalar cross section has been extracted.
Its energy dependence indicates that mainly partial waves with Sp final states
contribute. Note: Due to a coding error, the differential cross sections as shown in Fig. 9 are too small by a factor of two, and
inn Table 3 the differential cross sections
are too large by a factor of . The integrated cross sections and all
conclusions remain unchanged. A corresponding erratum has been submitted and
accepted by European Physics Journal.Comment: 18 pages, 16 figure
Novel Approaches towards Highly Selective Self-Powered Gas Sensors
The prevailing design approaches of semiconductor gas sensors struggle to overcome most of their current limitations such as poor selectivity, and high power consumption. Herein, a new sensing concept based on devices that are capable of detecting gases without the need of any external power sources required to activate interaction of gases with sensor or to generate the sensor read out signal. Based on the integration of complementary functionalities (namely; powering and sensing) in a singular nanostructure, self-sustained gas sensors will be demonstrated. Moreover, a rational methodology to design organic surface functionalization that provide high selectivity towards single gas species will also be discussed. Specifically, theoretical results, confirmed experimentally, indicate that precisely tuning of the sterical and electronic structure of sensor material/organic interfaces can lead to unprecedented selectivity values, comparable to those typical of bioselective processes. Finally, an integrated gas sensor that combine both the self-powering and selective detection strategies in one single device will also be presented. © 2015 Published by Elsevier Ltd.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Beyond Einstein-Cartan gravity: Quadratic torsion and curvature invariants with even and odd parity including all boundary terms
Recently, gravitational gauge theories with torsion have been discussed by an
increasing number of authors from a classical as well as from a quantum field
theoretical point of view. The Einstein-Cartan(-Sciama-Kibble) Lagrangian has
been enriched by the parity odd pseudoscalar curvature (Hojman, Mukku, and
Sayed) and by torsion square and curvature square pieces, likewise of even and
odd parity. (i) We show that the inverse of the so-called Barbero-Immirzi
parameter multiplying the pseudoscalar curvature, because of the topological
Nieh-Yan form, can only be appropriately discussed if torsion square pieces are
included. (ii) The quadratic gauge Lagrangian with both parities, proposed by
Obukhov et al. and Baekler et al., emerges also in the framework of Diakonov et
al.(2011). We establish the exact relations between both approaches by applying
the topological Euler and Pontryagin forms in a Riemann-Cartan space expressed
for the first time in terms of irreducible pieces of the curvature tensor.
(iii) Only in a Riemann-Cartan spacetime, that is, in a spacetime with torsion,
parity violating terms can be brought into the gravitational Lagrangian in a
straightforward and natural way. Accordingly, Riemann-Cartan spacetime is a
natural habitat for chiral fermionic matter fields.Comment: 12 page latex, as version 2 an old file was submitted by mistake,

The Electromagnetic Mass Differences of Pions and Kaons
We use the Cottingham method to calculate the pion and kaon electromagnetic
mass differences with as few model dependent inputs as possible. The
constraints of chiral symmetry at low energy, QCD at high energy and
experimental data in between are used in the dispersion relation. We find
excellent agreement with experiment for the pion mass difference. The kaon mass
difference exhibits a strong violation of the lowest order prediction of
Dashen's theorem, in qualitative agreement with several other recent
calculations.Comment: 40 pages, Latex, needs axodraw. and psfig. macros, 4 figure
Neutrino Interactions at Ultrahigh Energies
We report new calculations of the cross sections for deeply inelastic
neutrino-nucleon scattering at neutrino energies between 10^{9}\ev and
10^{21}\ev. We compare with results in the literature and assess the
reliability of our predictions. For completeness, we briefly review the cross
sections for neutrino interactions with atomic electrons, emphasizing the role
of the -boson resonance in interactions for neutrino
energies in the neighborhood of 6.3\pev. Adopting model predictions for
extraterrestrial neutrino fluxes from active galactic nuclei, gamma-ray
bursters, and the collapse of topological defects, we estimate event rates in
large-volume water \v{C}erenkov detectors and large-area ground arrays.Comment: 32 pages, 11 figures, uses RevTeX and boxedep
Atmospheric neutrino observations and flavor changing interactions
Flavor changing (FC) neutrino-matter interactions can account for the
zenith-angle dependent deficit of atmospheric neutrinos observed in the
SuperKamiokande experiment, without directly invoking neither neutrino mass,
nor mixing. We find that FC -matter interactions provide a good fit to
the observed zenith angle distributions, comparable in quality to the neutrino
oscillation hypothesis. The required FC interactions arise naturally in many
attractive extensions of the Standard Model.Comment: RevTex, 4 pages, 2 postscript figures, some minor modifications in

New parton distributions in fixed flavour factorization scheme from recent deep-inelastic-scattering data
We present our QCD analysis of the proton structure function
to determine the parton distributions at the next-to-leading order (NLO). The
heavy quark contributions to , with = , have been
included in the framework of the `fixed flavour number scheme' (FFNS). The
results obtained in the FFNS are compared with available results such as the
general-mass variable-flavour-number scheme (GM-VFNS) and other prescriptions
used in global fits of PDFs. In the present QCD analysis, we use a wide range
of the inclusive neutral-current deep-inelastic-scattering (NC DIS) data,
including the most recent data for charm , bottom , longitudinal
structure functions and also the reduced DIS cross sections
from HERA experiments. The most recent HERMES data for
proton and deuteron structure functions are also added. We take into account
ZEUS neutral current DIS inclusive jet cross section data from HERA
together with the recent Tevatron Run-II inclusive jet cross section data from
CDF and D{\O}. The impact of these recent DIS data on the PDFs extracted from
the global fits are studied. We present two families of PDFs, {\tt KKT12} and
{\tt KKT12C}, without and with HERA `combined' data sets on DIS. We
find these are in good agreement with the available theoretical models.Comment: 23 pages, 26 figures and 4 tables. V3: Only few comments and

Precise Measurement of the Pi+ -> Pi0 e+ nu Branching Ratio
Using a large acceptance calorimeter and a stopped pion beam we have made a
precise measurement of the rare Pi+ -> Pi0 e+ Nu,(pi_beta) decay branching
ratio. We have evaluated the branching ratio by normalizing the number of
observed pi_beta decays to the number of observed Pi+ -> e+ Nu, (pi_{e2})
decays. We find the value of Gamma(Pi+ -> Pi0 e+ Nu)/Gamma(total) = [1.036 +/-
0.004(stat.) +/- 0.004(syst.) +/- 0.003(pi_{e2})] x 10^{-8}$, where the first
uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third is the pi_{e2}
branching ratio uncertainty. Our result agrees well with the Standard Model
prediction.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, revtex4; changed content; updated

Neutrino Physics at the Turn of the Millenium
Recent solar & atmospheric nu-data strongly indicate need for physics beyond
the Standard Model. I review the ways of reconciling them in terms of 3-nu
oscillations. Though not implied by data, bi-maximal nu-mixing models emerge as
a possibility. SUSY with broken R-parity provides an attractive way to
incorporate it, opening the possibility of testing nu-anomalies at high- energy
colliders such as the LHC or at the upcoming long-baseline or nu- factory
experiments. Reconciling, in addition, the LSND hint requires a fourth, light
sterile neutrino, nus. The simplest are the most symmetric scenarios, in which
2 of the 4 neutrinos are maximally-mixed and lie at the LSND scale, while the
others are at the solar scale. The lightness of nus, the nearly maximal
atmospheric mixing, and the solar/atmospheric splittings all follow naturally
from the assumed lepton-number symmetry and its breaking. These basic schemes
can be distinguished at neutral-current-sensitive solar & atmospheric neutrino
experiments such as SNO. However underground experiments have not yet proven
neutrino masses, as there are many alternatives. For example flavour changing
interactions can play an important role in the explanation of solar and
contained atmospheric data and could be tested e.g through \mu \to e + \gamma,
\mu-e conversion in nuclei, unaccompanied by neutrino-less double beta decay.
Conversely, a short-lived numu might play a role in the explanation of the
atmospheric data. Finally, in the presence of a nus, a long-lived heavy nutau
could delay the time at which the matter and radiation contributions to the
energy density of the Universe become equal, reducing density fluctuations on
smaller scales, thus saving the standard CDM scenario, while the light nue,
numu and nus would explain the solar & atmospheric data.Comment: Invited talk at 2nd International Conference on Non-Accelerator New
