    Genetic parameters for Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida resistance, immunological markers and body weight in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata)

    A challenge test for Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida (Phdp) resistance was carried out in two juvenile populations of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.): F2_ATL and F0_MED. At 250 days post-hatching (dph), a fish plasma sample was collected to measure humoral immune markers (peroxidase activity, bactericidal activity, and IgM immunoglobulin levels), and at 272 dph fish were weighed and inoculated with bacteria Phdp. From that time onwards, surviving fish were recorded for nine days, and days to death was registered. Heritabilities for body weight and Phdp survival were moderate, although for days to death the heritability was low. Regarding humoral immune markers, for peroxidase activity it was moderate, and for IgM levels and for bactericidal activity it was low. Genetic correlations for body weight with Phdp survival and days to death were high and positive, while with peroxidase activity and IgM levels they tended to be positive, although these estimates were not accurate. Regarding genetic correlations between Phdp survival and humoral immune markers, they were very high, positive with peroxidase activity, and negative with IgM levels and bactericidal activity. Some humoral immune markers, particularly peroxidase activity, along with performance traits such as body weight and absence of deformities, are proposed to be included in a selective breeding program to raise fish that are capable of coping with diseasesVersión del editor2,04

    Prevalence and determinants of unintended pregnancies amongst women attending antenatal clinics in Pakistan

    Background: Unintended pregnancies are a global public health concern and contribute significantly to adverse maternal and neonatal health, social and economic outcomes and increase the risks of maternal deaths and neonatal mortality. In countries like Pakistan where data for the unintended pregnancies is scarce, studies are required to estimate its accurate prevalence and predictors using more specific tools such as the London Measure of Unplanned Pregnancies (LMUP). Methods: We conducted a hospital based cross sectional survey in two tertiary care hospitals in Pakistan. We used a pre tested structured questionnaire to collect the data on socio-demographic characteristics, reproductive history, awareness and past experience with contraceptives and unintended pregnancies using six item the LMUP. We used Univariate and multivariate analysis to explore the association between unintended pregnancies and predictor variables and presented the association as adjusted odds ratios. We also evaluated the psychometric properties of the Urdu version of the LMUP. Results: Amongst 3010 pregnant women, 1150 (38.2%) pregnancies were reported as unintended. In the multivariate analysis age \u3c 20 years (AOR 3.5 1.1-6.5), being illiterate (AOR 1.9 1.1-3.4), living in a rural setting (1.7 1.2-2.3), having a pregnancy interval of = \u3c 12 months (AOR 1.7 1.4-2.2), having a parity of \u3e2 (AOR 1.4 1.2-1.8), having no knowledge about contraceptive methods (AOR 3.0 1.7-5.4) and never use of contraceptive methods (AOR 2.3 1.4-5.1) remained significantly associated with unintended pregnancy. The Urdu version of the LMUP scale was found to be acceptable, valid and reliable with the Cronbach\u27s alpha of 0.85. Conclusions: This study explores a high prevalence of unintended pregnancies and important factors especially those related to family planning. Integrated national family program that provides contraceptive services especially the modern methods to women during pre-conception and post-partum would be beneficial in averting unintended pregnancies and their related adverse outcomes in Pakistan

    Do Trading and Power Operations Mix? The Case of Constellation Energy Group 2008

    Constellation Energy has been a leading performer in the merchant power business since 2001. In addition to its legacy utility, Baltimore Gas and Electric, Constellation is a merchant generator and a wholesale power marketer serving the load of utilities as well as industrial, commercial and retail customers. Constellation has developed sophisticated risk management capabilities and a large trading operation in electric power and related commodities. In a recent reorganization, Constellation gave its trading operations greater organizational independence and prominence. It also increased the scale of its proprietary trading, and used its trading operation as the tool for expanded investments into upstream natural gas and coal and international freight. In August and September of 2008, Constellation experienced a major liquidity crisis that saw its stock price fall by nearly three-quarters. In an emergency search for cash, it was forced to agree to sell itself at the low price. This paper reviews Constellation’s history and the specific events precipitating its liquidity crisis. It then places Constellation’s strategy vis-à-vis its commodity trading operations in the context of the larger history of commodity trading operations and discusses the key financial and strategic questions posed by Constellation’s crisis.Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
