    Get PDF
The impact of goal and intentions-setting on the performance of students was evaluated. A cohort of volunteer students (n=54) were randomly assigned to three groups. Then, each group was exposed to an appropriate intervention seminar lasting one hour. The Control Group (n= 18) who used neither goal nor intentions-setting was asked to utilize strategies that they had used in the past that had helped their academic performances. Group 2 (n=16) was coached in developing S.M.A.R.T. goals and how to apply them to accomplish the objectives of their current semester’s course. Group 3 (n=20) was coached in developing S.M.A.R.T. goals in combination with an intentions action plan and how to apply them to accomplish the objectives of their current semester’s course. Students’ mean final grades were the dependent variable used in the statistical analysis to evaluate each group’s performance. The between-groups one-way ANOVA showed that the performance of groups was statistically significantly different from one another. The mean final grade of Group 3 was significantly higher than that of Group 2. There was no statistical difference in mean final grades between Groups 2 and Control. This research suggests that combining S.M.A.R.T. goals with an intentions action plan helps students perform better in their courses. Although setting goals is a first step in achieving academic success, without creating intent to reinforce those goals, such success is not easily obtained

CO 2 emissions, urbanisation and economic growth: evidence from Asian countries

This paper empirically examines the dynamic causal relationships between CO 2 emissions, energy consumption, economic growth, trade openness and urbanisation for the period 1980–2014 using the pooled mean group (P.M.G.) approach and panel Granger causality tests for Asian countries. Using panel unit root tests we found that all variables integrated of order 1. From the Pedroni panel cointegration test, there is a long-run relationship among the variables. The results showed that urbanisation increases energy consumption and CO 2 emissions. Environmental quality is considered a normal good in the long run. The Granger causality test results support that there is a bidirectional causal relationship between economic growth, urbanisation and CO 2 emissions. Consumption is greater than the impact on CO 2 emissions in the eastern region and some evidence supports the compact city theory. These results contribute not only to advancing the existing literature, but also deserve special attention from policymakers and urban planners in Asian countries

Effect of Argon CarriEffect of Argon Carrier Gas Flux on TiO2 Nanostructures

TiO2 nanowires (NWs) have been fabricated by thermal evaporation method, using the vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) growth method and Au thin layer as a catalyst which were coated on titanium/quartz substrate. Optical and microstructure properties of TiO2 NWs have been reviewed under different argon carrier gas flows. The gas flow was varied from 60 to 170 sccm. The X-ray diffraction patterns showed that TiO2 NWs formed in rutile phase and their preferred orientation was in (110). The field emission scanning electron microscope figures indicated that with increasing gas flow, nanowires became thinner and longer. The absorbance curve of TiO2 nanowires has been drawn by using spectrophotometer and their band gap was measured. Our results showed that the band gap has been enhanced in comparison with bulk one due to the quantum confinement. Also, the band gap enhanced from 3.35 to 3.45 eV by increasing the argon flow, since the wires became thinner and longer. The Williamson–Hall mechanism was applied as the vital tools for characterization of crystallite size and microstrain. Also, microstructure properties have been studied by X-ray diffraction analysis such as; dislocation density and texture coefficient. The crystallinity of TiO2 NWs has been made better by enhancing Ar flow due to increasing of VLS growth method

FePt nanocrystals with L10 chemical order have high magnetic anisotropy. To form the hard magnetic L10 phase as prepared fcc FePt nanocrystals need to be heated to 600°C. We demonstrate that the morphology of chemically etched porous silicon (PS) substrates and the presence of a magnetic field during the annealing process (600 °C, 1 h) affect the particle arrangement and orientation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) show the presence of the L10 ordered FePt particles (average diameter 15 nm) uniformly distributed on the substrate. The presence of perpendicular magnetic field during annealing increases the order parameter degree of L10 FePt NPs. These effects can be investigated from variations of the XRD peaks intensity ratio. Presence of magnetic field of 20mT in the perpendicular direction to the substrate surface increases the (001) peak intensity ratio with respect to (111) peak from 0.27 to 0.58. This effect is due to the superlattice formation at (001) direction
