Adversa divi Augusti. Pliny the Elder: Naturalis Historia 7. 147–150

The life-work of Augustus and its memory is usually illustrated by the Res gestae as well as the historical pieces of Tacitus, Suetonius and Cassius Dio. This cultural memory omits the Augustus-portrait of the chapters 147–150 of Book 7 of the Naturalis Historia, which summarize the life or more exactly the misfortunes of the life of Rome’s first emperor. This anti-Res gestae divi Augusti is unique not only in ancient literature but in the context of the Naturalis Historia as well. Critics have advocated different explanations. This paper is devoted to an analysis of these chapters in the context of the textual unit that organically contains them, and which culminates in them

Od „Skóry Satyra” do „Barbarzyńcy wypchanego”. Wersje mitu Marsjasza w literaturze węgierskiej.

The tragic myth of Marsyas challenging Apollo was eternalized in Ovid’s wonderful works (Fasti, Metamorphoses). To this day, the ar chetypical Ovidian story has attracted the attention of Hungarian literature. The essay proceeds from the interpretation of the original narrative, which has become an unavoidable point of reference for contemporary Hungarian works. These texts enter into intertextual dialogue with each other not only because of the similar topic. It is the meaningfulness of the body, the body as a textual representational strategy that becomes the common point which joins these texts into the discourse about the body. This approach from the side of corpore al narratology invites a reading of Gergely Péterfy’s The Stuffed Bar‑ barian, which can be interpreted as the most special rewriting of the Marsyas narrative.

This study employs the descriptive approach to identify the relationship between the ways of confronting stress and the psychological hardiness in displaced adolescents according to various variables. The main sample was selected randomly from the original study population. The sample consisted of (200) displaced adolescents (99 males and 101 females) from Sweida secondary schools. Two types of test instruments were used: The Psychological Hardiness Scale by (Nasser, 2012) and the Ways of Confronting Stresses Scale by (Al Abdallah, 2014). The psychometric properties of both scales were tested. To answer the study questions, the following statistics were used: Pearson correlation coefficient, t-test, one-way ANOVA Test, LSD test. The results indicate a positive correlation between the ways of confronting stresses and psychological hardiness. There was no significant difference between female and male students in terms of psychological hardiness, and neither was there any significant difference in Psychological hardiness according to age. The study also indicates differences between males and females in terms of denial. It seems that females are more denial than males and there are differences in the style of planning to solve problems according to age differences. The category (5 years and above) a higher degree of the planning to solve problems. The results of this research is likely to be a starting point for designing of the activities and training courses. Researchers should focus on the importance of psychological hardiness development programs as well as mental health practitioners should focus on the planning of integrated rehabilitation programs, furthermore they should pay more attention to social support, family unity, workshops and training courses for displaced adolescents

On the ground: Reimagining community protection of the ecosphere in the Northern Rivers

    Get PDF
It would appear that the effects of sustained overuse of the planet’s resources is straining the natural world to its limits. The consequences of staying on this path may be catastrophic for both planet and humankind. At this time, when the ecosphere which sustains us all is so fragile, it seems imperative that we address the nature of the fundamental relationship between humans and their environment. Hence, we should perhaps undertake to reimagine our relationship with nature, with place and with each other if we are to counteract such malign influences. This paper will argue that localised, direct democratic action offers us one way in which we may begin to redeem these relationships by providing an account of the way in which an assortment of subcultures in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales united to successfully oppose mining for coal seam gas. The Northern Rivers is renowned for its natural endowments and a community which boasts great diversity. A variety of motivations led to an array of groups exerting their collective power and unity at grassroots level to defeat the attempt to introduce unconventional methods of gas extraction. In this process, a sense of place emerged as an important factor for many of those resisting the mining. The movement as it unfolded ‘on the ground’ proposes an alternative way of being and belonging, developed through a different relationship to place, community and the ecosphere

Automated blackbox GUI specifications enhancement and test data generation

Applications with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) front-end are ubiquitous nowadays. While automated model-based approaches have been shown to be effective in testing of such applications, most existing techniques produce many infeasible event sequences used as GUI test cases. This happens primarily because the behavioral specifications of the GUI under test are ignored. In this dissertation we present an automated framework that reveals an important set of state-based constraints among GUI events based on infeasible (i.e., unexecutable or partially executable) test cases of a GUI test suite. GUIDiVa, an iterative algorithm at the core of our framework, enumerates all possible constraint violations as potential reasons for test case failure, on the failed event of an infeasible test case. It then selects and adds the most promising constraints of each iteration to a final set based on the Validity Weight of constraints. The results of empirical studies on both seeded and nine non-trivial open-source study subjects show that our framework is capable of capturing important aspects of GUI behavior in the form of state-based event constraints, while considerably reducing the number of insfeasible test cases. The second part of this dissertation deals with the problem of automatic generation of relevant test data for parameterized GUI events (i.e., events associated with widgets that accept user inputs such as textboxes and textareas). Current techniques either manipulate the source code of the application under test (AUT) to generate the test data, or blindly use a set of random string values. We propose a novel way to generate the test data by exploiting the information provided in the GUI structure to extract a set of key identifiers for each parameterized GUI widget. These identifiers are used to compose appropriate online search phrases and collect relevant test data from the Internet. The results of an empirical study on five GUI-based applications show that the proposed approach is applicable and results in execution of some hard-to-cover branches in the subject programs. The proposed technique works from a black-box perspective and is entirely independent from GUI modeling and event sequence generation, thus it does not require source code access and offers the possibility of being integrated with existing GUI testing frameworks

Evaluation of Anteroposterior Lip Positions in the Most-Favored Iranian Facial Profiles Using Silhouette

Objective: One of the most important goals of orthodontic treatment is to create an esthetic, well balanced facial profile. However, the components of a wellbalanced Iranian facial profile have not yet been established. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anteroposterior lip position of the Iranian population and to compare the perception of orthodontists, dental students and orthodontic patients using a series of silhouettes with varying anteroposterior lip positions. Materials and Methods: Average female and male silhouette profiles were constructed from the profiles of 30 Iranian men and women with a normal skeletal relationship. The lips in each average profile were protruded or retruded in 2-mm increments and the 7 images were arranged randomly. Thirty orthodontists, 30 dental students and 30 orthodontic patients were asked to score each silhouette from 1 (very bad) to 5 (very good). Results: Both the orthodontists and the students preferred the average profile for men and slightly more retruded lip position for women. Orthodontic patients had a wide range of preference for men and selected more retruded lip positions for women. The least-favored profile was the most protrusive in the 3 groups. Conclusion: These findings suggest that Iranian orthodontists, dental students and orthodontic patients prefer an average profile for men and slightly retruded profiles for women
