Semen Cryopreservation in Brazilian Freshwater Fish: Advances and Main Challenges

    Get PDF
Studies on semen cryopreservation in Brazilian freshwater fish have been growing in number of publications and investigated species. Despite this apparent increase in research, standardization of cryoprotocols is still missing, making it clear that the grounds on the quality of cryopreserved semen has not yet reached a level that guarantee satisfactory results for its replication. This chapter aims to make a critical and reflective analysis on the ways cryopreservation of freshwater fish semen has been conducted in Brazil. The difficulties in standardizing protocols, broodstock, and selection of genetically superior animals; the barriers in transferring technology from laboratory benches to the field and make feasible the use of cryopreserved semen on a commercial scale; the formation of germplasm banks and the responsible use of cryopreserved material are also discussed. We have no intention to point out the successes and mistakes that may have been committed in pursuing development of cryopreservation protocols, but a reflection on the future directions considering what should be pondered on this subject with objectivity and scientific consolidation

Design and Performance Evaluation of SMC-Based DC–DC Converters for Microgrid Applications

In recent times, DC microgrids (MGs) have received significant attention due to environmental concerns and the demand for clean energies. Energy storage systems (ESSs) and photovoltaic (PV) systems are parts of DC MGs. This paper expands on the modeling and control of non-isolated, non-inverting four-switch buck-boost (FSBB) synchronous converters, which interface with a wide range of low-power electronic appliances. The proposed power converter can work efficiently both independently and in DC MGs. The charging and discharging of the battery are analyzed using the FSBB converter at a steady state in continuous conduction mode (CCM). A boost converter is connected to a PV system, which is then connected in parallel to the battery to provide voltages at the DC bus. Finally, another FSBB converter is connected to a resistive load that successfully performs the boost-and-buck operation with smooth transitions. Since these power converters possess uncertainties and non-linearities, it is not suitable to design linear controllers for these systems. Therefore, the controlling mechanism for these converters’ operation is based on the sliding mode control (SMC). In this study, various macro-level interests were achieved using SMC. The MATLAB Simulink results successfully prove the precise reference tracking and robust stability in different operating modes of DC–DC converters in a MG structure.© 2023 by the authors. This study aimed to evaluate muscle organization in tambaqui in order to describe the muscle growth process. We analyzed the morphometric pattern of fibers from white muscle of young-adults (300 days) by smaller diameter. The organization of white muscle exhibited a typical morphological pattern found in other fish species. Heavier animals showed higher frequency of larger diameter fibers (>50 μm) and smaller animals had higher frequency of smaller diameter fibers (50 μm) than males. However, there was no difference between body weight and sex (P=0.8). Our results suggest that muscle growth is by hypertrophy and hyperplasia due to a mosaic appearance from different diameters fibers, which is characteristic of large size fish species.O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a organização muscular em tambaqui, a fim de descrever o processo de crescimento muscular.

The pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L) Millspaugh] is one of the most important perennial legume crops utilized in the food, fodder, soil conservation, crop-livestock integrated systems, reclaiming of degraded pastures and symbiotic nitrogen fixation. Microsatellite markers were used to estimate the genetic diversity of 77 pigeonpea genotypes selected from the germplasm collections at Embrapa Cattle-Southeast and, to evaluate their transferability to Phaseolus vulgaris and Vigna unguiculata species. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to12, with an average of 5.1 alleles. The PIC values ranged from 0.11 to 0.80 (average 0.49) and the D values from 0.23 to 0.91 (average 0.58). The averages of observed and expected heterozygosity were 0.25 and 0.47, respectively, showing a deficit in heterozygosity. A model-based Bayesian approach implemented in the software STRUCTURE was used to assign genotypes into clusters. A dendrogram was constructed based on the modified Roger's genetic distances using a neighbor-joining method (NJ). A total of four clusters were assembled by STRUCTURE and a strong tendency of correspondence between the Bayesian clusters in the NJ tree was observed. The genetic distance ranged from 0.09 to 0.62 (average 0.37), showing a low genetic diversity in the pigeonpea genotypes. Transferability of pigeonpea-specific microsatellites revealed a cross-amplification and the presence of polymorphic alleles in P. vulgaris and V. unguiculata

Introduction: Sexting behaviors among medical students have scarcely been researched. Although there are diverse types of sexting involving the exchange of different sexual content, two scenarios will be examined here: (a) the exchange of intimate images solely between two partners; and (b) sharing intimate images exchanged between partners with others outside the relationship. Objective: To verify empathy-related differences between sexting within consensual relationships and non-consensual distribution of intimate images. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study in which participants provided information through a self-reported questionnaire. Inventories for empathy and sexual impulsiveness and measures of sociodemographic features and sexting behaviors were applied. Results: This study included 202 medical students. The groups of students engaged in sexting (with or without sharing partners’ intimate images) demonstrated higher sexual impulsiveness and lower personal distress than the reference group. Only the students who admitted to sharing partners’ intimate images showed lower empathic concern and perspective taking than the reference group (affective and cognitive empathy, respectively). Overall, the results of this study support previous findings that individuals engaged in sexting demonstrate lower personal discomfort with their actions than people not engaged in sexting. Conclusion: Despite knowing the legal consequences of the exposure of intimate images from partners or colleagues, some students seem to prefer taking this risk. Results: Este estudo incluiu 202 estudantes de Medicina.

Cytogenetic Instability in Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Survivors

Contemporary anticancer therapies have largely improved the outcome for children with cancer, especially for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Actually, between 78% and 85% of patients achieve complete remission and are alive after 5 years of therapy completion. However, as cure rates increase, new concerns about the late effects of genotoxic treatment emerge, being the risk of developing secondary neoplasias, the most serious life-threatening rising problem. In the present paper, we describe and review the cytogenetic findings in peripheral lymphocytes from ALL survivors, and discuss aspects associated to the occurrence of increased chromosome rearrangements in this growing cohort

Encapsulation of Phenolic Compounds from a Grape Cane Pilot-Plant Extract in Hydroxypropyl Beta-Cyclodextrin and Maltodextrin by Spray Drying

Grape canes, the main byproducts of the viticulture industry, contain high-value bioactive phenolic compounds, whose application is limited by their instability and poorly solubility in water. Encapsulation in cyclodextrins allows these drawbacks to be overcome. In this work, a grape cane pilot-plant extract (GCPPE) was encapsulated in hydroxypropyl beta-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) by a spray-drying technique and the formation of an inclusion complex was confirmed by microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The phenolic profile of the complex was analyzed by LC-ESI-LTQ-Orbitrap-MS and the encapsulation efficiency of the phenolic compounds was determined. A total of 42 compounds were identified, including stilbenes, flavonoids, and phenolic acids, and a complex of (epi)catechin with β-CD was detected, confirming the interaction between polyphenols and cyclodextrin. The encapsulation efficiency for the total extract was 80.5 ± 1.1%, with restrytisol showing the highest value (97.0 ± 0.6%) and (E)-resveratrol (32.7 ± 2.8%) the lowest value. The antioxidant capacity of the inclusion complex, determined by ORAC-FL, was 5300 ± 472 µmol TE/g DW, which was similar to the value obtained for the unencapsulated extract. This formulation might be used to improve the stability, solubility, and bioavailability of phenolic compounds of the GCPPE for water-soluble food and pharmaceutical applications

It was aimed with this study to evaluate the cycling network infrastructure of Lucas do Rio Verde City in the state of Mato Grosso. This is a descriptive and quantitative study, in which the collection and interpretation of results followed the recommendations indicated by the QualICiclo scale, a model for the evaluation of cycling structures. As applications of this recent method were not found in other studies, some methodological adjustments needed to be made, such as obtaining consensus in the evaluations through the judgment of independent judges. After all, the main results revealed that Lucas do Rio Verde cycling network extension meets the standards of larger cities but with insufficient connectivity between cycle paths and cycle lanes. It could be assumed that by choosing a newly created town endowed with relevant development indicators, the study can contribute to raising the role of active mobility management in small and medium-sized cities, especially regarding the assessment of the built environment. Finally, it raises the emergence of proactive actions to promote active transport through investment in cycling infrastructure in such places.
