    Innovation in tourism and startups in Brazil, Spain and Portugal

    The present study aims to analyze innovative initiatives related to the promotion of startups in Brazil, Spain and Portugal, in the context of smart tourism destinations (STD). Based on an exploratory and descriptive study with a qualitative approach, programs related to innovation and entrepreneurship were identified in the countries under analysis, as well as concrete initiatives of innovation in tourism related to startups. Therefore, 60 new items per country, out of a total of 180, were selected on the Google platform. The results of the research show that there are guidelines linked to startups in the three countries. In general terms, it was possible to observe that from startups. It is possible to promote the development of ITD, since the initiatives identified contribute, among other aspects, with experiences.

    Bacterial cellulose as a novel stabilizer and texturizer for cosmetic and food applications

    Book of Abstracts of CEB Annual Meeting 2017[Excerpt] Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a sophisticated material produced biotechnologically by different microorganisms, but most efficiently by acetic acid bacteria from the genera Gluconacetobacter. While chemically identical to plant cellulose, BNC is chemically pure. Each BNC nanofiber is a bundle of cellulose nanofibrils. Due to their nano-size, these aggregates of extended cellulose chains have a rather large surface area. The unique properties of BNC account for an extraordinary physico-chemical and mechanical behaviour. For industrial applications, hydrocolloidal microcrystalline cellulose from vegetable sources is widely used to regulate the texture, rheology, stability and organoleptic properties of the formulations [1]. Several studies are being carried out to investigate the technological role of BNC. Preliminary results already showed that BNC is technically superior to these vegetable celluloses, and can outperform plant celluloses in several applications within the food industry. As a novel hydrocolloid, BNC presents important features such as the stabilization of heterogeneous systems (air-liquid, solid-liquid and liquidliquid): it is able to stabilize aerogels, increasing the incorporation of air in the liquid matrix (overrun), so it can be used as an additive in ice cream, smoothies and whipped cream; it can stabilize solid particles in a liquid matrix (e.g. cocoa particles in chocolate milk); BNC also stabilizes of oil-in-water emulsions, in spoonable and pourable dressings, without the need to add any other emulsifying agents.     Antiangiogenic and antioxidant in vitro properties of hydroethanolic extract from açaí (Euterpe oleracea) dietary powder supplement

    The Euterpe oleracea fruit (açaí) is a promising source of polyphenols with health-promoting properties. To our knowledge, few studies have focused on the influence of açaí phytochemicals on angiogenesis, with a significant impact on cancer. This study aimed at investigating the phytochemical profile of a purple açaí hydroethanolic extract (AHE) obtained from a commercial dietary powder supplement by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to diode array detection and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and evaluate its in vitro effects on distinct angiogenic steps during vessel growth and on oxidative markers in human microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC-1). The phenolic profile of AHE revealed the presence of significant levels of anthocyanins, mainly cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside, and other flavonoids with promising health effects. The in vitro studies demonstrated that AHE exerts antiangiogenic activity with no cytotoxic effect. The AHE was able to decrease HMEC-1 migration and invasion potential, as well as to inhibit the formation of capillary-like structures. Additionally, AHE increased antioxidant defenses by upregulating superoxide dismutase and catalase enzymatic activities, accompanied by a reduction in the production of reactive oxygen species. These data bring new insights into the potential application of angiogenic inhibitors present in AHE on the development of novel therapeutic approaches for angiogenesis-dependent diseases.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Tensile strain hardening of a metakaolin based fibre reinforced composite

    Portland cement concrete is the most used building material in the world. However, its manufacture is energy-intensive and it is susceptible to harsh environments. Alternative binder systems without ordinary Portland cement, such as geopolymers or alkali-activated materials, are recently new in the Civil Engineered world. These alternative binder systems seek, among other characteristics, improved durability and environmental efficiency. The attaining of strain hardening and multiple cracking typical of Strain Hardening Cementitious Composites (SHCC) using these alternative binder systems is very attractive from a conceptual point of view, since additional endurance to certain harsh or extreme environments, as well as enhanced durability, are usually expected as two of the main outcomes. In the present work, the behaviour of two different composites was studied: an existing Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) and a new composite based on an alternative binder prepared with metakaolin. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibres were used in both materials. A series of experiments, including compressive and direct tensile testing were carried out to characterize and compare the mechanical properties of both materials. The results showed that the alternative binder composite, when subjected to uniaxial tension, developed multiple cracks at steadily increasing tensile stress and strain, which is also typical of ECCs showing strain hardening behaviour. The development of fibre reinforced geopolymer or alkali-activated materials showing strain hardening ability in tension may still be considered as a novel research topic, with great potential for creating new and interesting developments for Civil Engineering and structural applications, particularly the ones subjected to harsh environments

    Enhanced dissolution efficiency of tamoxifen combined with methacrylate copolymers in amorphous solid dispersions

    Amorphous solid dispersions (SDs) containing poorly soluble tamoxifen dispersed in a meth(acrylate) copolymer combination were proposed as a controlled release system. The objective of this work was to investigate the characteristics and performance of the tamoxifen–polymer mixture and evaluate the changes in functionality through a supersaturating dissolution study condition while comparing it to a physical mixture at a fixed drug-loading proportion. Two polymers, Eudragit® L 100 and Eudragit® RL 100, were used to prepare SDs with a 1:1 polymer ratio, containing 10%, 20%, or 30% (wt/wt%) of tamoxifen, by the solvent evaporation method. A physical mixture containing 30% of tamoxifen was also prepared for comparison. SDs were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. Dissolution tests were conducted under non-sink conditions to verify the occurrence of drug recrystallization upon its release. Solid-state characterizations confirmed that the drug was in the amorphous state within the polymeric matrix. Tamoxifen release in an acidic medium was mainly affected by the increase in drug concentration caused by the possible loss of interactions that characterize the main polymer functionalities. At pH 7.4, supersaturation was slowly achieved while also contributing to the increase in the kinetic solubility of the drug. The physical mixture demonstrated the best overall performance, suggesting that the polymeric interactions may have negatively affected the drug release. The combination of polymers in the composing SD proved to be a promising strategy to tailor the delivery of poorly soluble drugs.     Does phonological overlap of cognate words modulate cognate acquisition and processing in developing and skilled readers?

    Very few studies exist on the role of cross-language similarities in cognate word acquisition. Here we sought to explore, for the first time, the interplay of orthography (O) and phonology (P) during the early stages of cognate word acquisition, looking at children and adults with the same level of foreign language proficiency, and by using two variants of the word-association learning paradigm (auditory learning method vs. auditory + written method). Eighty participants (forty children and forty adults, native speakers of European Portuguese [EP]), learned a set of EP-Catalan cognate words and non-cognate words. Among the cognate words, the degree of orthographic and phonological similarity was manipulated. Half of the children and adult participants learned the new words via an L2 auditory and written-L1 word association method, while the other half learned the same words only through an L2 auditoryL1 word association method. Both groups were tested in an auditory recognition task and a go/no-go lexical decision task. Results revealed a disadvantage for children in comparison to adults, which was reduced in the auditory learning method. Furthermore, there was an advantage for cognates relative to non-cognates regardless of the age of participants. Importantly, there were modulations in cognate word processing as a function of the degree of O and P overlap which were restricted to children.     Fatores associados à exposição ao HIV em usuários de álcool

    Introduction: The HIV prevalence is higher in Porto Alegre compared to other capitals in Brazil. Alcohol abuse affects critical judgment, being associated with risky behaviors that can lead to HIV infection. Aim: To analyze factors associated with exposure to HIV in alcohol users, comparing those with risky sexual practices and those who use prevention methods. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 126 male alcohol users (HIV negative), divided into 2 groups: Sexually Exposed (n=42) and Less Sexually Exposed (n=84), considering condom use and number of sexual partners. Results: Most subjects in the Sexually Exposed group were single, without a job, with a history of homelessness and a relationship with a sexual worker, and were more concerned about HIV infection (p<0.05). Discussion: The development and monitoring of specific preventive interventions is suggested, considering the characteristics of alcohol abuse and its role in HIV transmission.Introdução: A prevalência de HIV é maior em Porto Alegre comparada ao restante do país. O abuso de álcool afeta o juízo crítico, sendo associado a comportamentos de risco que podem levar à contaminação pelo HIV. Objetivo: Analisar fatores associados à exposição ao HIV em alcoolistas com práticas sexuais de risco comparando com aqueles que se previnem. Métodos: Estudo transversal com 126 homens alcoolistas (HIV negativo), divididos em 2 grupos: Exposto Sexual (n=42) e Pouco Exposto Sexual (n=84), considerando uso de preservativo e número de parceiros sexuais. Resultados: A maioria dos sujeitos do grupo Exposto Sexual era solteiro, sem ocupação laboral, com histórico de moradia de rua e de relação com profissional do sexo,  apresentavam maior preocupação com infecção por HIV (p<0,05). Conclusão: Sugere-se o desenvolvimento e monitoramento de intervenções preventivas específicas, considerando as características do abuso de álcool e seu papel na transmissão do HIV

    Yicathins B and C and analogues: total synthesis, lipophilicity and biological activities

    Natural products had always be an important source of new hits and leads in drug discovery. The marine environment has been regarded as a significant souce of novel and exquisite bioactive compounds. Yicathins B and C are two marine derived xanthones that have shown antibacterial and antifungal activities. Herein, the total synthesis of these yicathins is reported for the first time as well as six novel analogues. As marine natural products tend to bear very lipophilic scaffolds, the lipophilicity of yicathins and its analogues was evaluated using the classical octanol:water system and a biomimetic model based system. As the xanthonic nucleus is a â privileged structureâ , other biological activities were evaluated, namely antitumor and anti-inflammatory activities.     New di(hetero)arylethers and di(hetero)arylamines in the thieno[3,2-b]pyridine series: Synthesis, growth inhibitory activity on human tumor cell lines and non-tumor cells, effects on cell cycle and on programmed cell death

    New fluorinated and methoxylated di(hetero)arylethers and di(hetero)arylamines were prepared functionalizing the 7-position of the thieno[3,2-blpyridine, using copper (C-O) or palladium (C N) catalyzed couplings, respectively, of the 7-bromothieno[3,2-blpyridine, also prepared, with ortho, meta and para fluoro or methoxy phenols and anilines. The compounds obtained were evaluated for their growth inhibitory activity on the human tumor cell lines MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma), NCI-H460 (non-small cell lung cancer), HCI15 (colon carcinoma), HepG2 (hepatocellular carcinoma) and HeLa (cervical carcinoma). The most active compounds, a di(hetero)arylether with a methoxy group in the meta position relative to the ether function and two di(hetero)arylamines with a methoxy group either in the ortho or in the meta position relative to the NH, were further tested at their GI(50) concentrations on NCI-H460 cells causing pronounced alterations in the cell cycle profile and a strong and significant increase in the programmed death of these cells. The fluorinated and the other methoxylated compounds did not show important activity, presenting high GI(50) values in all the cell lines tested. Furthermore, the hepatotoxicity of the compounds was assessed using porcine liver primary cells (PLP2), established by some of us.
