    Design and optimization of a 100 keV DC/RF ultracold electron source

    An ultracold electron source based on near-threshold photoionization of a laser-cooled and trapped atomic gas is presented in this work. Initial DC acceleration to 10 keV and subsequent acceleration of the created bunches to 100 keV by RF fields makes the design suitable to serve as injector for accelerator-based light sources, single-shot ultrafast protein crystallography, applications in dielectric laser acceleration schemes, and potentially as an injector for free electron lasers operating in the quantum regime. This paper presents the design and properties of the developed DC/RF structure. It is shown that operation at a repetition frequency of 1 kHz is achievable and detailed particle tracking simulations are presented showing the possibility of achieving a brightness that can exceed conventional RF photosources

    A critical reappraisal of paleomagnetic evidence for Philippine Sea Plate rotation

We thank Fagan Matthys and CJ Paulino for their help in the field.The kinematic history of the Philippine Sea Plate (PSP) is crucial for interpreting its geological record related to subduction initiation processes and the paleogeography of the junction between the Paleo-Pacific and Tethyan oceanic realms. However, reconstructing PSP's kinematic history is difficult because the plate has been surrounded by subduction zones for most of its history. In absence of marine magnetic anomalies to constrain PSP's motion relative to its neighboring plates, paleomagnetic data may be used as quantitative constraints on its motion. Previous paleomagnetic studies interpreted easterly deflected declinations to infer clockwise rotations of up to 90° since the Eocene. However, rotations inferred from these datasets may also reflect local block rotations related to plate margin deformation. We here re-evaluate to what extent paleomagnetic data from the PSP unequivocally demonstrate plate motion rather than local rotation. To this end, we provide new data from Guam, in the Mariana forearc, and reassess published paleomagnetic data. Our new data from Guam come from two localities in the Eocene, two in the Oligocene, and two in the Miocene. Our compilation assesses data quality against recently defined criteria. Our new results demonstrate that in Guam, declination differences of up to 35° exist in rocks of Eocene age, indicating local rotations. Our compilation identifies both clockwise and counterclockwise rotations from the plate margins, with little confidence which of these would reflect plate-wide rotation. We compiled paleolatitude data from igneous rocks, which we correct for microplate rotation constrained by intra-PSP marine magnetic anomalies and show a northward drift of the PSP of ∌15° since the Eocene, but without a paleomagnetic necessity for major vertical axis rotation. Hence, with the currently available data, rotations of the PSP may be permitted, but are not required.     Internal control over financial reporting and managerial rent extraction: Evidence from the profitability of insider trading

    __Abstract__ This paper examines the association between ineffective internal control over financial reporting and the profitability of insider trading. We predict and find that the profitability of insider trading is significantly greater in firms disclosing material weaknesses in internal control relative to firms with effective control. The positive association is present in the years leading up to the disclosure of material weaknesses, but disappears after remediation of the internal control problems. We find insider trading profitability is even greater when insiders are more likely to act in their own self-interest as indicated by auditors’ weak “tone at the top” adverse internal control opinions and this incremental profitability is driven by insider selling. Our research identifies a new setting where shareholders are most at risk for wealth transfers via insider trading and highlights market consequences of weak “tone at the top”

    Declarative Modeling–An Academic Dream or the Future for BPM?

    Declarative modeling has attracted much attention over the last years, resulting in the development of several academic declarative modeling techniques and tools. The absence of empirical evaluations on their use and usefulness, however, raises the question whether practitioners are attracted to using those techniques. In this paper, we present a study on what practitioners think of declarative modeling. We show that the practitioners we involved in this study are receptive to the idea of a hybrid approach combining imperative and declarative techniques, rather than making a full shift from the imperative to the declarative paradigm. Moreover, we report on requirements, use cases, limitations, and tool support of such a hybrid approach. Based on the gained insight, we propose a research agenda for the development of this novel modeling approach

    Assessment of Free Radical Scavenging Potency and In-vitro Antioxidant Analysis of Ximenia caffra (Sour Plum) Leaf

    This study is focused on the determination of the free radical scavenging potency and in-vitro antioxidant analysis of extracts of Ximenia Caffra (sour plum) leaf, (using methanol, chloroform and n-hexane as solvent. About 50.0g of the powdered samples was weighed into a beaker and methanol (300 mL) was added into it. The same process was repeated for chloroform and n-hexane extract. The DPPH free radical scavenging assay were carried out using ascorbic acid as the positive control. The results of the analysis at 50, 100, 200, 400 and 800 Όg/mL shows the following % inhibition: (40, 50, 65, 80, and 91), for the methanolic extract, (16, 18, 26, 29, and 33), for the chloroform extract and (13, 17, 21, 32, and 55), for the n-hexane extract. The IC50 (”g/mL) values revealed 71.83 for the methanol extract, 1500 for the chloroform extract, and 715.05 for the n-hexane extract. From the result, it can be concluded that sour plum leaves can be used in the treatment of certain diseases such as diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, insomnia, and liver problems in which the participation of reactive oxygen species have been implicated

    Fatty acid 16:4(n-3) stimulates a GPR120-induced signaling cascade in splenic macrophages to promote chemotherapy resistance

    Although chemotherapy is designed to eradicate tumor cells, it also has significant effects on normal tissues. The platinum-induced fatty acid 16:4(n-3) (hexadeca-4,7,10,13-tetraenoic acid) induces systemic resistance to a broad range of DNA-damaging chemotherapeutics. We show that 16:4(n-3) exerts its effect by activating splenic F4/80+/CD11blow macrophages, which results in production of chemoprotective lysophosphatidylcholines (LPCs). Pharmacologic studies, together with analysis of expression patterns, identified GPR120 on F4/80+/CD11blow macrophages as the relevant receptor for 16:4(n-3). Studies that used splenocytes from GPR120-deficient mice have confirmed this conclusion. Activation of the 16:4(n-3)-GPR120 axis led to enhanced cPLA2 activity in these splenic macrophages and secretion of the resistance-inducing lipid mediator, lysophosphatidylcholine(24:1). These studies identify a novel and unexpected function for GPR120 and suggest that antagonists of this receptor might be effective agents to limit development of chemotherapy resistance.—Houthuijzen, J.     Exact General Relativistic Perfect Fluid Disks with Halos

    Using the well-known ``displace, cut and reflect'' method used to generate disks from given solutions of Einstein field equations, we construct static disks made of perfect fluid based on vacuum Schwarzschild's solution in isotropic coordinates. The same method is applied to different exactsolutions to the Einstein'sequations that represent static spheres of perfect fluids. We construct several models of disks with axially symmetric perfect fluid halos. All disks have some common features: surface energy density and pressures decrease monotonically and rapidly with radius. As the ``cut'' parameter aa decreases, the disks become more relativistic, with surface energy density and pressure more concentrated near the center. Also regions of unstable circular orbits are more likely to appear for high relativistic disks. Parameters can be chosen so that the sound velocity in the fluid and the tangential velocity of test particles in circular motion are less then the velocity of light.     High-affinity and selective detection of pyrophosphate in water by a resorcinarene salt receptor

    Pyrophosphate (PPi) is a byproduct of DNA and RNA synthesis, and abnormal levels are indicative of disease. We report the high-affinity binding of PPi in water by N-alkyl ammonium resorcinarene chloride receptors. Experimental analysis using 1H and 31P NMR, isothermal titration calorimetry, mass spectrometry, and UV-vis spectroscopy all support exceptional selectivity of these systems for PPi in water. The measured affinity of K1 = 1.60 × 107 M-1 for PPi is three orders of magnitude larger than that observed for binding to another phosphate, ATP. This exceptional anion-binding affinity in water is explored through a detailed density functional theory computational study. These systems provide a promising avenue for the development of future innovative medical diagnostic tools
