Letter from Wm. Dallam Armes to John Muir, 1891 May 15.

[letterhead]May 15, 1891.My dear Mr. Muir,I feel that I owe you some explanation as to my apparent apathy in regard to the proposed Sierra Club. I have by no means given up the idea and have done a little looking towards organization. A short time after I had the talk with you, however, it was intimated to me that it might be possible for me to secure a leave of absence from the University and spend two years in study in Europe. Under these circumstances, as it seemed probable that I could take but little part in the organization of the club, I deemed it wise to take no further action until my affairs were more definitely settled. At the meeting of the Board of Regents on Tuesday the question was settled for me by that body’s denying my request. I am therefore ready to do anything that you think will assure the success of our plans. I have spoken to a number of persons and feel sure that, if our dues are not made too high, we can open with a membership of twenty or twenty-five, enough for a nucleus. I have corresponded with the officers of the Alpine Club of Portland, and they will do all in their power to help us. I write now mainly to ask whether you think it would be better to call a meeting at once, or whether you consider it more advisable to wait until after the summer vacation, meanwhile interesting as many persons as possible in the idea. I send you in this mail a little work that I have lately reprinted. I hope that you will like it.Yours very sincerely,Wm. Dallam Armes

Spacelab Data Processing Facility (SLDPF) quality assurance expert systems development

    Get PDF
Spacelab Data Processing Facility (SLDPF) expert system prototypes were developed to assist in the quality assurance of Spacelab and/or Attached Shuttle Payload (ASP) processed telemetry data. The SLDPF functions include the capturing, quality monitoring, processing, accounting, and forwarding of mission data to various user facilities. Prototypes for the two SLDPF functional elements, the Spacelab Output Processing System and the Spacelab Input Processing Element, are described. The prototypes have produced beneficial results including an increase in analyst productivity, a decrease in the burden of tedious analyses, the consistent evaluation of data, and the providing of concise historical records

PregradoIngeniero Civi

A MODEL OF THE RETRAUMATIZATION PROCESS: A META-SYNTHESIS OF CHILDHOOD SEXUAL ABUSE SURVIVORS' EXPERIENCES IN HEALTHCARE

    Get PDF
Childhood sexual abuse survivors frequently report feeling retraumatized during routine healthcare encounters. The goal of this study was to develop a model to aid in understanding difficulties abuse survivors face when accessing healthcare. Meta-synthesis was used to combine data from 15 qualitative studies. The resultant Healthcare Retraumatization Model postulates that retraumatization is a cyclical process with four interrelated subprocesses: hypersensitivity to threats to safety, exposure to triggers, post-traumatic stress reactions, and avoidant coping. Hypersensitivity can cause abuse survivors to feel threatened in situations which require trust and evoke vulnerability, powerlessness, or loss of control. Triggers are situations that cause abuse survivors to feel threatened and elicit stress reactions. Survivors typically cope by employing avoidant coping strategies originally developed during childhood to survive their abuse. Without intervention, retraumatization can result in unhealthy outcomes due to the negative effects of stress on survivors' mental and physical health along with interruptions in healthcare

    Durkheim’s View of Religion »

The contributions of the leader and founder of L’Année Sociologique school, certainly the most important sociological contributions yet made by any ‘school,’ may be said to have their climax in the author’s last book, Les Formes Élémentaires de la Vie Religieuse. Le Systeme Totemique en Australie. (Paris, 1912.) The book may be said to aim at two things as of predominant importance : First, a definition of and insight into religion in general, irrespective of culture and clime ; second, an an..

Recent research on composite beams with demountable shear connectors

YesThis paper presents experimental and numerical investigation on an innovative composite floor system with deconstructability. In this system, a composite slab formed with metal profiled decking is connected to a steel beam using demountable shear connectors. A series of push tests was conducted to investigate the behaviour of this form of shear connectors. In addition to the push tests, a full-scale composite beam was tested to failure in the laboratory under a number of cycles of monotonic loading. For direct comparison, a similar composite beam test was conducted using same section size, concrete strength, but using the conventional welded headed stud connectors. Test results showed that the behaviour of the composite beam with demountable shear connectors is comparable with the specimen with welded shear connectors. After the test was terminated, the demountable shear connectors were unfastened and the composite floor can be easily lifted off from the steel beam. Test result showed that these demountable shear connectors possess high ductility in comparison with the equivalent welded shear connectors. Simple design rules currently use in Eurocode 4 for the welded shear connections and Eurocode 3 for bolts are proposed to predict the shear resistance of this form of demountable shear connectors
