Robust gradient-based discrete-time iterative learning control algorithms
This paper considers the use of matrix models and the robustness of a gradient-based Iterative Learning Control (ILC) algorithm using both fixed learning gains and gains derived from parameter optimization. The philosophy of the paper is to ensure monotonic convergence with respect to the mean square value of the error time series. The paper provides a complete and rigorous analysis for the systematic use of matrix models in ILC. Matrix models make analysis clearer and provide necessary and sufficient conditions for robust monotonic convergence. They
also permit the construction of sufficient frequency domain conditions for robust monotonic convergence on finite time intervals for both causal and non-causal controller dynamics. The results are compared with recent results for robust inverse-model based ILC algorithms and it is seen
that the algorithm has the potential to improve robustness to high frequency modelling errors provided that resonances within the plant bandwidth have been suppressed by feedback or series compensation
Thrust Chamber Modeling Using Navier-Stokes Equations: Code Documentation and Listings
A copy of the PHOENICS input files and FORTRAN code developed for the modeling of thrust chambers is given. These copies are contained in the Appendices. The listings are contained in Appendices A through E. Appendix A describes the input statements relevant to thrust chamber modeling as well as the FORTRAN code developed for the Satellite program. Appendix B describes the FORTRAN code developed for the Ground program. Appendices C through E contain copies of the Q1 (input) file, the Satellite program, and the Ground program respectively

This paper demonstrates the occurrence of the feature called BRAVO (Balancing
Reduces Asymptotic Variance of Output) for the departure process of a
finite-buffer Markovian many-server system in the QED (Quality and
Efficiency-Driven) heavy-traffic regime. The results are based on evaluating
the limit of a formula for the asymptotic variance of death counts in finite
birth--death processes
A stochastic epidemiological model and a deterministic limit for BitTorrent-like peer-to-peer file-sharing networks
In this paper, we propose a stochastic model for a file-sharing peer-to-peer
network which resembles the popular BitTorrent system: large files are split
into chunks and a peer can download or swap from another peer only one chunk at
a time. We prove that the fluid limits of a scaled Markov model of this system
are of the coagulation form, special cases of which are well-known
epidemiological (SIR) models. In addition, Lyapunov stability and settling-time
results are explored. We derive conditions under which the BitTorrent
incentives under consideration result in shorter mean file-acquisition times
for peers compared to client-server (single chunk) systems. Finally, a
diffusion approximation is given and some open questions are discussed.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figure
Protein-RNA interactions: a structural analysis
A detailed computational analysis of 32 protein-RNA complexes is presented. A number of physical and chemical properties of the intermolecular interfaces are calculated and compared with those observed in protein-double-stranded DNA and protein-single-stranded DNA complexes. The interface properties of the protein-RNA complexes reveal the diverse nature of the binding sites. van der Waals contacts played a more prevalent role than hydrogen bond contacts, and preferential binding to guanine and uracil was observed. The positively charged residue, arginine, and the single aromatic residues, phenylalanine and tyrosine, all played key roles in the RNA binding sites. A comparison between protein-RNA and protein-DNA complexes showed that whilst base and backbone contacts (both hydrogen bonding and van der Waals) were observed with equal frequency in the protein-RNA complexes, backbone contacts were more dominant in the protein-DNA complexes. Although similar modes of secondary structure interactions have been observed in RNA and DNA binding proteins, the current analysis emphasises the differences that exist between the two types of nucleic acid binding protein at the atomic contact level

First year student experience
The application was made on behalf of the undergraduate courses team who sought to enhance the first year experience by engaging students in the practice of business. The intention was to develop and signpost enterprising qualities and characteristics in first year learners and develop confidence as well as competence.
The undergraduate review for FBL commenced in September 2009. This offered an opportunity to innovate and build good practice in enterprise learning as a pilot to inform the undergraduate review. The team sought to provide a coherent and relevant set of learning experiences that could be achieved outside structured curriculum that would enable learning through live projects

Time-dependent currents of 1D bosons in an optical lattice
We analyse the time-dependence of currents in a 1D Bose gas in an optical
lattice. For a 1D system, the stability of currents induced by accelerating the
lattice exhibits a broad crossover as a function of the magnitude of the
acceleration, and the strength of the inter-particle interactions. This differs
markedly from mean-field results in higher dimensions. Using the infinite Time
Evolving Block Decimation algorithm, we characterise this crossover by making
quantitative predictions for the time-dependent behaviour of the currents and
their decay rate. We also compute the time-dependence of quasi-condensate
fractions which can be measured directly in experiments. We compare our results
to calculations based on phase-slip methods, finding agreement with the scaling
as the particle density increases, but with significant deviations near unit

Quantum Field Theory for the Three-Body Constrained Lattice Bose Gas -- Part II: Application to the Many-Body Problem
We analyze the ground state phase diagram of attractive lattice bosons, which
are stabilized by a three-body onsite hardcore constraint. A salient feature of
this model is an Ising type transition from a conventional atomic superfluid to
a dimer superfluid with vanishing atomic condensate. The study builds on an
exact mapping of the constrained model to a theory of coupled bosons with
polynomial interactions, proposed in a related paper [11]. In this framework,
we focus by analytical means on aspects of the phase diagram which are
intimately connected to interactions, and are thus not accessible in a mean
field plus spin wave approach. First, we determine shifts in the mean field
phase border, which are most pronounced in the low density regime. Second, the
investigation of the strong coupling limit reveals the existence of a new
collective mode, which emerges as a consequence of enhanced symmetries in this
regime. Third, we show that the Ising type phase transition, driven first order
via the competition of long wavelength modes at generic fillings, terminates
into a true Ising quantum critical point in the vicinity of half filling.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure
