Tese de doutoramento, Urbanismo, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Arquitetura, 2022The city is an artefact, an unfinished object in transformation in time and space. Today, the coastal urban settlement is subject to the effects of climate change, particularly the rise in average sea level, which require new and different adaptation processes: whether metamorphosis or sedimentation. In the literature review, coastal cities are usually referred to as territory in crisis due to flooding and erosion, caused by extreme events. Yet, crisis from the Latin crisis and the Greek κρίσις, means ‘to choose’. The contemporary choice to which the architect and urban planner must respond is “how” to transform the cities. However, to implement this choice critical techniques are needed that go beyond the limits of morphological knowledge, - a showcase in which elements of the city we exposed by the remotion of layers, such as dead flesh from a body - in order to re-appropriate the operating methodological process (Muratori, 1960).This research aims to discuss how to decode the public space in contact with the sea, the seashore street, through three instrumental concepts: type, limit and elements; as syntactic compositional principles that enable the design of the urban object. A process in which we re-appropriate the space and time of the project, abandoning the immobility of the diorama in which the decoding of urban form has often been confined. In this moment of transformation we are experiencing, we need to read the territory through “typological criticism” (Tafuri, 1969) to find the invariant forms on which to base our design choices. There are no territories in crisis but cities in transformation, as always.N/

Streets by the sea: type–morphology of Portuguese Atlantic waterfront facing sea level rise

Global warming affects the city and the interaction of anthropogenic systems. Among the effects of climate change, there is an increase in the average sea level, as reported by the IPCC. In an unpredictable future of climate change where cities are vulnerable anthropic systems, it is required to make cities climate-proof. This thesis research focuses on the seashore street, in the Portuguese coastal cities. The relationship between water and the built area defines a territory that has been considered habitable and that over time has developed different forms of use: fishing, port, and today is a recreational place. The aim is to describe seashore streets' characteristics in the space through a morphological analysis of its spatial dimension evolution in time. Furthermore to understand what happens when the urban and the Atlantic overlap. The identification and classification of this part of the city is the first step for its adaptation.Peer Reviewe

Methods and Tools of Quantification in Historical Research. Napoleonic Employment Applications as a Case Study

    Get PDF
This contribution suggests quantitative methods suitable for a one-person history project, explaining their value and their challenges by using my research project as an example. After introducing research questions, I focus on choices of categorization and methods of detecting correlation between variables. Then, after presenting the most popular text-mining techniques, I focus on those that can integrate the analysis of texts with their associated metadata, drawing examples from the Napoleonic Employment Applications project

    Ultraviolet Sensitivity of Peccei--Quinn Inflation

The radial direction of the Peccei--Quinn field can drive cosmic inflation, given a non-minimal coupling to gravity. This scenario has been considered to simultaneously explain inflation, the strong CPCP problem, and dark matter. We argue that Peccei--Quinn inflation is extremely sensitive to higher-dimensional operators. Further combining with the discussion on the axion quality required for solving the strong CPCP problem, we examine the validity of this scenario. We also show that after Peccei--Quinn inflation, resonant amplifications of the field fluctuation is inevitably triggered.Comment: 26 pages plus appendices, 9 figure

Dominance induction of fruitlet shedding in Malus × domestica (L. Borkh): molecular changes associated with polar auxin transport

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Apple fruitlet abscission is induced by dominance, a process in which hormones such as auxin, cytokinins and strigolactone play a pivotal role. The response to these hormones is controlled by transcription regulators such as Aux/IAA and ARR, whereas auxin transport is controlled by influx and efflux carriers. RESULTS: Seven partial clones encoding auxin efflux carriers (MdPIN1_A, MdPIN1_B, MdPIN10_A, MdPIN10_B, MdPIN4, MdPIN7_A and MdPIN7_B), three encoding auxin influx carriers (MdLAX1, MdLAX2 and MdLAX3) and three encoding type A ARR cytokinin response regulators (MdARR3, MdARR4 and MdARR6) were isolated by the use of degenerate primers. The organization of the PIN multigene family in apple is closer to Medicago truncatula than to Arabidopsis thaliana. The genes are differentially expressed in diverse plant organs and at different developmental stages. MdPIN1 and MdPIN7 are largely more expressed than MdPIN10 and MdPIN4. During abscission, the transcription of these genes increased in the cortex whereas in the seed a sharp fall was observed. The expression of these genes was found to be at least partially controlled by ethylene and auxin. CONCLUSION: The ethylene burst preceding abscission of fruitlets may be responsible for the decrease in transcript level of MDPIN1, MDARR5 and MDIAA3 in seed. This situation modulates the status of the fruitlet and its fate by hampering the PAT from the seeds down through the abscission zone (AZ) and this brings about the shedding of the fruitlet
