Community participation in protected area management of Taman Negara National Park, Pahang, Malaysia / Mohd Salleh Daim
Within the theoretical concepts community participation has been used or explored in many fields as an approach for conflict resolution. In the field of natural resource management, recognising the rights and responsibility of local community neighbouring to natural areas has become vital to complement the traditional management approach especially in protected area management. One of the prevalent issues in the field of protected area management would be the relationship between the protected area and its neighbours. This bittersweet relationship is loaded with protected area management theories and principles adopted by most management agencies mixed with the moral, values and norms of local community who often reside within or in close proximity to these protected areas. This thesis explores the dynamic of participatory approach in protected area management. This thesis deals with the long overdue issue of local community versus protected area, by exploring one example pertinent to Malaysia which is the Taman Negara National Park and its neighbours. Briefly, it intends to examine the issues, concerns and opportunities of participatory approach in protected area management in Peninsular Malaysia. Specifically, it examines the benefits of community participation and its relationship with community acceptance on the types or levels of participation suitable in protected area management

Isolation, Production and Characterization of Thermostable Lipase from Bacillus Sp. Strain L2
A thermostable lipolytic endospore forming Bacillus sp. strain L2 was isolated from a hot
spring (91oC) in Slim River, Perak, Malaysia. Nutritional studies showed that casamino
acid was the best nitrogen source while trehalose and Tween 60 were the best carbon
source and substrate respectively, for lipase production. The enzyme production was
promoted in the presence of metal ions such as Ca2+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Zn2+, and Sr2+. The
optimum lipase production was obtained in the presence of CaCl2. Physiological study
indicate that, this strain showed optimal lipase production after 28 h of incubation at 70
oC with 1% starting inoculum. The enzyme was purified to homogeneity by ammonium
sulphate precipitation and affinity column chromatography (Heparin), with 3 fold
increase in specific activity and 48.9 % recovery. The purified enzyme produced a single
band on SDS-PAGE. Its molecular mass was estimated to be 43 KDa. The optimum pH
and temperature for L2 lipase were determined to be 7.0 and 80 oC, respectively. The
III
lipase was very stable for 2 h at 80 oC. The stability at higher temperature was shown to
be calcium dependent. The lipase activity was enhanced by Fe2+and Ca2+ while Cu2+
inhibited it. The enzyme activity was strongly inhibited by PMSF and completely
inhibited by pCMB. Substrates such as olive oil and sesame oil enhanced the lipase
activity
Exploring technology acceptance for mobile services
Purpose: Mobile phone industries are no longer relying on voice services. It is predicted that data services are expected to be a remediation for the declining of average revenue per user (ARPU) in telecommunication market. The purpose of this paper is to find the factors that influence the acceptance/adoption of mobile services.
Design/methodology/approach: This paper utilizes quantitative method. Questionnaire were distributed to collect the data. The questionnaires are designed specifically to address the factors related to mobile services. Later on, this paper uses Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) and Cluster analysis to identify the factors that influence the adoption of mobile services.
Findings: The results show that ease of use and usefulness are top two factors that influence the adoption of mobile services.
Research limitations/implications: The sample for the study is relatively small. For future research, the sample should be increased. The data collection should also look into different devices and operating system of mobile phones to find if there is any significant difference in adopting mobile services.
Practical implications: This framework is expected to be able to help the mobile services provider to design better mobile services that can attract users to adopt them

Technology Forecasting for Wireless Communication
Wireless communications technologies have undergone rapid changes over the last 30 years from analog approaches to digital-based systems. These technologies have improved on many fronts including bandwidth, range, and power requirements. Development of new telecommunications technologies is critical. It requires many years of efforts. In order to be competitive, it is critical to establish a roadmap of future technologies. This paper presents a framework to characterize, assess and forecast the wireless communication technologies. A DEA-based methodology was used for predicting the state-of-the-art in future wireless communications technologies
Technology foresight: a bibliometric analysis to identify leading and emerging methods
Foresight studies provide essential information used by the government, industry and academia for technology planning and knowledge expansion. They are complicated, resource-intensive, and quite expensive. The approach, methods, and techniques must be carefully identified and selected. Despite the global importance of foresight activities, there are no frameworks to help one develop and plan a proper foresight study. This paper begins to close this gap by analyzing and comparing different schools of thought and updating the literature with the most current tools and methods. Data mining techniques are used to identify articles through an extensive literature review. Social Network Analysis (SNA) techniques are used to identify and analyze leading journals, articles, and researchers. A framework is developed here to provide a guide to help in the selection of methods and tools for different approaches
