Evaluating the Chinese Revised Controlling Behaviors Scale (C-CBS-R)
The present study evaluated the utility of the Chinese version of the Revised Controlling Behaviors Scale (C-CBS-R) as a measure of controlling behaviors in violent Chinese intimate relationships. Using a mixed-methods approach, in-depth, individual interviews were conducted with 200 Chinese women survivors to elicit qualitative data about their personal experiences of control in intimate relationships. The use of controlling behaviors was also assessed using the C-CBS-R. Interview accounts suggested that the experiences of 91 of the women were consistent with the description of coercive control according to Dutton and Goodman’s (2005) conceptualization of coercion. Using the split-half validation procedure, a receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis was conducted with the first half of the sample. The area under the curve (AUC) for using the C-CBS-R to identify high control was .99, and the cutoff score of 1.145 maximized both sensitivity and specificity. Applying the cutoff score to the second half gave a sensitivity of 96% and a specificity of 95%. Overall, the C-CBS-R has demonstrated utility as a measure of controlling behaviors with a cutoff score for distinguishing high from low levels of control in violent Chinese intimate relationships
Clues to the nature of dark matter from first galaxies
We use thirty-eight high-resolution simulations of galaxy formation between
redshift 10 and 5 to study the impact of a 3 keV warm dark matter (WDM)
candidate on the high-redshift Universe. We focus our attention on the stellar
mass function and the global star formation rate and consider the consequences
for reionization, namely the neutral hydrogen fraction evolution and the
electron scattering optical depth. We find that three different effects
contribute to differentiate warm and cold dark matter (CDM) predictions: WDM
suppresses the number of haloes with mass less than few M; at
a fixed halo mass, WDM produces fewer stars than CDM; and finally at halo
masses below M, WDM has a larger fraction of dark haloes than
CDM post-reionization. These three effects combine to produce a lower stellar
mass function in WDM for galaxies with stellar masses at and below
M. For , the global star formation density is lower by a
factor of two in the WDM scenario, and for a fixed escape fraction, the
fraction of neutral hydrogen is higher by 0.3 at . This latter
quantity can be partially reconciled with CDM and observations only by
increasing the escape fraction from 23 per cent to 34 per cent. Overall, our
study shows that galaxy formation simulations at high redshift are a key tool
to differentiate between dark matter candidates given a model for baryonic

Development of sampling efficiency and internal noise in motion detection and discrimination in school-aged children
AbstractThe aim of this study was to use an equivalent noise paradigm to investigate the development and maturation of motion perception, and how the underlying limitations of sampling efficiency and internal noise effect motion detection and direction discrimination in school-aged children (5–14years) and adults. Contrast energy thresholds of a 2c/deg sinusoidal grating drifting at 1.0 or 6.0Hz were measured as a function of added dynamic noise in three tasks: detection of a drifting grating; detection of the sum of two oppositely drifting gratings and direction discrimination of oppositely drifting gratings. Compared to the ideal observer, in both children and adults, the performance for all tasks was limited by reduced sampling efficiency and internal noise. However, the thresholds for discrimination of motion direction and detection of moving gratings show very different developmental profiles. Motion direction discrimination continues to improve after the age of 14years due to an increase in sampling efficiency that differs with speed. Motion detection and summation were already mature at the age of 5years, and internal noise was the same for all tasks. These findings were confirmed in a 1-year follow-up study on a group of children from the initial study. The results support suggestions that the detection of a moving pattern and discriminating motion direction are processed by different systems that may develop at different rates
Interaction of laser generated ultrasonic waves with wedge-shaped samples
Wedge-shaped samples can be used as a model of acoustic interactions with samples ranging from ocean wedges, to angled defects such as rolling contact fatigue, to thickness measurements of samples with non-parallel faces. We present work on laser generated ultrasonic waves on metal samples; one can measure the dominant Rayleigh-wave mode, but longitudinal and shear waves are also generated. We present calculations, models, and measurements giving the dependence of the arrival times and amplitudes of these modes on the wedge apex angle and the separation of generation and detection points, and hence give a measure of the wedge characteristics
QuickXsort: Efficient Sorting with n log n - 1.399n +o(n) Comparisons on Average
In this paper we generalize the idea of QuickHeapsort leading to the notion
of QuickXsort. Given some external sorting algorithm X, QuickXsort yields an
internal sorting algorithm if X satisfies certain natural conditions.
With QuickWeakHeapsort and QuickMergesort we present two examples for the
QuickXsort-construction. Both are efficient algorithms that incur approximately
n log n - 1.26n +o(n) comparisons on the average. A worst case of n log n +
O(n) comparisons can be achieved without significantly affecting the average
case.
Furthermore, we describe an implementation of MergeInsertion for small n.
Taking MergeInsertion as a base case for QuickMergesort, we establish a
worst-case efficient sorting algorithm calling for n log n - 1.3999n + o(n)
comparisons on average. QuickMergesort with constant size base cases shows the
best performance on practical inputs: when sorting integers it is slower by
only 15% to STL-Introsort
Setting Priorities for Space Research: Opportunities and Imperatives
This report represents the first phase of a study by a task group convened by the Space Studies Board to ascertain whether it should attempt to develop a methodology for recommending priorities among the various initiatives in space research (that is, scientific activities concerned with phenomena in space or utilizing observations from space). The report argues that such priority statements by the space research community are both necessary and desirable and would contribute to the formulation and implementation of public policy. The report advocates the establishment of priorities to enhance effective management of the nation's scientific research program in space. It argues that scientific objectives and purposes should determine how and under what circumstances scientific research should be done. The report does not take a position on the controversy between advocates of manned space exploration and those who favor the exclusive use of unmanned space vehicles. Nor does the report address questions about the value or appropriateness of Space Station Freedom or proposals to establish a permanent manned Moon base or to undertake a manned mission to Mars. These issues lie beyond the charge to the task group
Dauphine Was Right: Masques, the Authenticity of (Un)Performed Identity, and the Two Prologues of Epicene
This paper argues that Epicene, Jonson's first public play after being made official court masque writer, is unusually optimistic about the possibilities of drama. The play explores the possibility of creating an authentic personality through performance, an idea that Jonson is often hostile towards. However, Jonson's flirtation with this pro-theater perspective was short lived. For complex reasons, Lady Arbella's complaint about the play led Jonson to once again grow cynical about the possibilities of the public stage. These vacillating perspectives, I argue, can be traced within the two different prologues, which offer two very different perspectives on playing, play going and the theater
