The levels of matrix metalloproteinase-9 and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin in different stages of endometriosis

Get PDF
This study was designed to explore matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) levels and MMP-9/NGAL ratio in women with and without endometriosis diagnosed surgically and/or histopathologically. The correlation between biomarkers and the severity of the disease is analysed. The revised American Fertility Society classification system was used to determine the severity of endometriosis. Serum MMP-9 and Ca125, urine NGAL levels were measured in all participants. Serum MMP-9 levels were significantly higher in the study group (n¼60) compared to controls (n¼31) (15.0 pg/mL (6.0–143.0) vs. 12.0 (4.0–18.0), respectively; p¼.002). MMP-9 levels were significantly higher in severe endometriosis compared to mild endometriosis subgroups (p<.001). No significant difference was found between NGAL levels in study and control groups (p>.05). The diagnostic value of MMP-9 and NGAL is not superior than CA-125 for endometriosis. Nevertheless, MMP-9 might be a potential predictive marker for advanced stage of the disease

</p&gt

Prosthetic Rehabilitation of Partial Ear Defect: 2 Case Reports

No full text
The loss or absence of an auricle may result from trauma, disease or congenital anomalies and causes a considerable aesthetic problem. If the deformity involves the external auditory canal, it can affect hearing. This case report describes the surgical and prosthetic treatment of two patients with partial defects of their right external ears from different causes. Implant-retained auricular prostheses fabricated from heat-temperature-vulcanised silicone were used in both the cases; they were designed to be harmonious with the remaining tissues. The patients experienced improved retention, aesthetics, hearing and quality of life with these prostheses. During the approximately 3 year follow-up, both the prostheses were re-fabricated once; however, problems related to implant stability and peri-implant tissue health were not encountered

*Erdönmez, Demet ( Aksaray, Yazar )Background: Traditional chemomechanical treatment procedures are an indispensable part of endodontic treatment, however, additional treatment approaches such as antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) may also be recommended for the elimination of residual microorganisms. In this study, the disinfection efficiency of aPDT performed using methylene blue (MB), toluidine blue (TB), and tetra 2-mercaptopyridine substituted zinc phthalocyanine (TM-ZnPc) was compared in the roots contaminated with Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis). Materials and methods: Forty-nine teeth with a single root and canal were included in this study. The roots were sterilized, and inoculated with E. faecalis. The roots were kept in an incubator for 30 days to form the biofilm. Forty-five teeth were prepared up to the F3 file of the ProTaperNext system under 2.5 % NaOCL irrigation. The samples were divided into three groups according to the type of used photosensitizer (PS) (n = 15); MB (313 μM), TB (327 μM), and TM-ZnPc (6μM). All PSs were irradiation with a light-emitting diode (LED) lamp (630 nm, 2–4 mW/cm²) for the 60 s. Two microbiological samples of the intracanal content were taken (one before and one immediately after additional aPDT in all groups) using sterile paper points. The colony-forming units per milliliter (CFU/mL) were calculated after 24 h of incubation at 37 °C. Results: After all aPDT protocols, intracanal bacterial load decreased significantly compared to the amount after chemomechanical preparation (P < 0.05). No significant difference in the reduction in intracanal bacterial load was found between the PSs (P < 0.05). Conclusions: In the current study, the aPDT protocol performed with TM-ZnPc provided similar antimicrobial efficacy, although it was used at a lower concentration compared to MB and TB. Therefore, the use of TM-ZnPc in intra-canal disinfection in endodontics seems promising

Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the knowledge of osteoporosis (OP) and the sources of information about the disease among medical students and the effect of the medical training on their awareness about the OP. Material and Methods: Two hundred twenty seven students were asked if they knew OP. Two hundred fifteen students reported that they were familiar with OP. Statistical analysis was done among these 215 students. The questionnaire included 7 questions. Participants were divided into three groups: English preparatory year’s students (EP), first year’s students, second year’s students. Results: Most of the students (94.4%, n=203) thought that OP was serious health problem. Two hundred three students(94%) believed that inadequate dietary calcium and vitamin D intake was the cause of OP. Bone densitometry was the mainly chosen (90.1%) diagnostic method. As source of knowledge from television was reported by 63.7% of the students. Number of the students who knew, in which population OP was seen, correctly (p=0.035) and who reported the health professionals as the source of knowledge (p=0.001) were significantly increased in first and second classes when compared with EP class. Conclusions: We observed that medical student who had no lessons of OP, have knowledge about OP by means of television and newspaper. (From the World of Osteoporosis 2009;15:43-7
