Relating ordinary and fully simple maps via monotone Hurwitz numbers

A direct relation between the enumeration of ordinary maps and that of fully simple maps first appeared in the work of the first and last authors. The relation is via monotone Hurwitz numbers and was originally proved using Weingarten calculus for matrix integrals. The goal of this paper is to present two independent proofs that are purely combinatorial and generalise in various directions, such as to the setting of stuffed maps and hypermaps. The main motivation to understand the relation between ordinary and fully simple maps is the fact that it could shed light on fundamental, yet still not well-understood, problems in free probability and topological recursion.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure

The Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries: Issues, Terminology, Principles, Institutional Foundations, Implementation and Outlook

    Get PDF
Ecosystems are complex and dynamic natural units that produce goods and services beyond those of benefit to fisheries. Because fisheries have a direct impact on the ecosystem, which is also impacted by other human activities, they need to be managed in an ecosystem context. The meaning of the terms 'ecosystem management', 'ecosystem based management', 'ecosystem approach to fisheries'(EAF), etc., are still not universally defined and progressively evolving. The justification of EAF is evident in the characteristics of an exploited ecosystem and the impacts resulting from fisheries and other activities. The rich set of international agreements of relevance to EAF contains a large number of principles and conceptual objectives. Both provide a fundamental guidance and a significant challenge for the implementation of EAF. The available international instruments also provide the institutional foundations for EAF. The FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries is particularly important in this respect and contains provisions for practically all aspects of the approach. One major difficulty in defining EAF lies precisely in turning the available concepts and principles into operational objectives from which an EAF management plan would more easily be developed. The paper discusses these together with the types of action needed to achieve them. Experience in EAF implementation is still limited but some issues are already apparent, e.g. in added complexity, insufficient capacity, slow implementation, need for a pragmatic approach, etc. It is argued, in conclusion, that the future of EAF and fisheries depends on the way in which the two fundamental concepts of fisheries management and ecosystem management, and their respective stakeholders, will join efforts or collide

Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles Using Recovered Gold from Electronic Waste

    Get PDF
Electronic waste contains considerable amounts of gold in its composition, especially some composting pieces like CPUs and memory cards. Recovered gold can have many uses, among those it can be an excellent alternative source for low-cost nanoparticles synthesis. Commercial chloroauric acid is the main precursor for nanoparticle synthesis, however its cost makes the process very expensive. Finding a lower cost alternative precursor is very important because it allows to economically enabling several gold nanoparticles applications. Through the hydrometallurgical method, it was possible to recover and to purify the appreciable amount of gold from old CPUs. This gold has been used to synthesize nanoparticles with a size of 198.5 nm and moderate stability. DOI:  http://dx.doi.org/10.17807/orbital.v13i2.145

Purpose: To study the psychometric properties and date normative of the Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices in a Portuguese community sample. Method: The sample consists of 697 people (314 men and 383 women), aged between 12 and 90 years. All participants filled an informed consent form and a battery of neuropsychological tests, which included Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices (RSPM), Rey 15-Item Memory Test, Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, Frontal Assessment Battery, and Rey Complex Figure Test. Results: The average in RSPM was 44.47 (SD = 10.78). The results showed that all of the sociodemographic variables (age, sex, education, profession, region, and typology of urban areas), with the exception of civil status, showed significant influence on RSPM scores. The reliability and temporal stability of RSPM were adequate. Exploratory and Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the model is not better explained by one factor. A two-factor model was not also suitable. Conclusion: The data from this study suggest that it is an instrument with potential for its use among the Portuguese population

Major clinical outcomes and analysis of the risk of bias of the advances in cervicofacial liposculture: a systematic review

    Get PDF
Introduction: In the context of liposculpture, cervicofacial liposuction involves the application of negative pressure through a hollow cannula in the subcutaneous plane to gently avulse fat cells and accurately sculpt unwanted fat deposits on the face and neck. Furthermore, lipo contouring provides a versatile tool in the facial surgeon's arsenal to achieve the desired facial profile. In 2020, approximately 15.5 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States alone. Objective: A systematic review was carried out on the main clinical results, presenting studies on the risk of bias, and the advances in facial and cervical liposculpture as an important aesthetic tool for the dental surgeon. Methods: The rules of the Systematic Review-PRISMA Platform were followed. The search was carried out from November 2021 to February 2022 in Scopus, PubMed, Science Direct, Scielo, and Google Scholar databases. Results: 64 articles were found involving liposculpture. A total of 32 articles were fully evaluated and 14 were included and developed in the present study. Considering the Cochrane tool for risk of bias, the overall assessment did not result in significant risk of bias studies. The Funnel Plot showed symmetrical behavior. Twenty-five studies did not meet the GRADE. Most patients who were involved in the studies showed improvements in facial augmentation and contouring. In patients with loss of facial volume, high-density fat transfer with the facial injection of SVF-gel resulted in significantly higher improvement scores and better patient satisfaction. Conclusion: According to the main clinical studies selected in the present study, cervicofacial liposculpture proved to be safe and effective. In patients with loss of facial volume, high-density fat transfer with a facial injection of SVF-gel resulted in significantly higher improvement scores and better patient satisfaction. Still, the results of the studies showed that the level of self-confidence and mental health-related quality of life can be significantly improved after facial lipofilling treatment

Mental health conceptions out the youth’s drawing analysis. This study aimed to investigate the mental health perception of teenagers from different socioeconomic backgrounds. A total of 252 students from the Federal District´s High School, being 129 from private school located in a high Human Development Index (HDI) region (54.3% female, 34.1% in the last year of high school and 48.8% aged over 16 years old) and 123 from public school located in a low HDI region (52.8% female, 82.9% from the 1st year of high school and 32.8% at the age of 16). The teenagers were asked to complete drawings by the phrase: “For myself, being mentally and emotionally healthy is ...”. The analysis of drawings resulted in 312 mental health representations and 11 thematic categories. In general, the mental health representations were guided by an ecological view, represented mainly by human figures with related content to personal well-being, representations of inter-relational links and intra-family and social contexts
