Magnetic and Photoluminescent Sensors Based on Metal-Organic Frameworks Built up from 2-aminoisonicotinate

ESFIn this work, three isostructural metal-organic frameworks based on frst row transition metal ions
and 2-aminoisonicotinate (2ain) ligands, namely, {[M(μ-2ain)2]·DMF}n [MII=Co (1), Ni (2), Zn (3)], are
evaluated for their sensing capacity of various solvents and metal ions by monitoring the modulation
of their magnetic and photoluminescence properties. The crystal structure consists of an open
diamond-like topological 3D framework that leaves huge voids, which allows crystallizing two-fold
interpenetrated architecture that still retains large porosity. Magnetic measurements performed on 1
reveal the occurrence of feld-induced spin-glass behaviour characterized by a frequency-independent
relaxation. Solvent-exchange experiments lead successfully to the replacement of lattice molecules by
DMSO and MeOH, which, on its part, show dominating SIM behaviour with low blocking temperatures
but substantially high energy barriers for the reversal of the magnetization. Photoluminescence studied
at variable temperature on compound 3 show its capacity to provide bright blue emission under UV
excitation, which proceeds through a ligand-centred charge transfer mechanism as confrmed by timedependent DFT calculations. Turn-of and/or shift of the emission is observed for suspensions of 3 in
diferent solvents and aqueous solutions containing metal ions
Using the Living CV to help students take ownership of their learning gain
There is an increasing emphasis on embedding employability skills and experience within the higher education curriculum to address new concepts of ‘learning gain’ and the perceived student demand for a value for money experience. An exploratory study, at a southern university in the UK, found that students articulated an improved work readiness when they were presented the ‘Living CV’, an initiative that connects programme learning outcomes into CV outputs. During 2018, a larger, mixed methods study (n=127) was conducted across all three years of fashion degrees. Students completed a pre and post questionnaire before and after a presentation on the Living CV and their views were further explored in a focus group and interviews. Results found that the Living CV presentation heightened students’ awareness of the applicability of their programme learning to their future employability and how they could use their academic learning outcomes on their CV as a tool to achieve this. The study recommends that personalised and explicit coaching on ‘work literacy’ should be integrated into university programmes at all levels to include the Living CV, discussion about and experience in the world of work, increased employer engagement and preparation for interview
The role of laparoscopic adrenalectomy for adrenal tumours of 6 cm or greater
<b>Background</b><br />
Laparoscopic adrenalectomy (LA) has been shown to reduce hospital stay and morbidity when compared to open adrenalectomy (OA). It is uncertain if the laparoscopic resection of large (≥6 cm) potentially malignant adrenal tumours is appropriate due to concern over incomplete resection and local recurrence. The aim of the present study was to compare the outcomes of LA for tumours ≥6 cm with those < 6 cm.<p></p>
<b>Methods</b><br />
Details of all patients referred with adrenal tumours between January 1999 and January 2006 had been recorded prospectively on a database. LA was performed using a lateral transabdominal approach. Contraindications to LA were local invasion requiring en bloc resection of adjacent organs or the requirement of additional open procedures. <p></p>
<b>Results</b><br />
103 patients were referred for adrenal resection. Three with metastatic adrenal carcinoma and two with severe cardiorespiratory disease were deemed unsuitable for operation. One hundred and eleven adrenalectomies were performed: 101 LAs and 10 OAs. Thirty-nine LA were for tumours ≥6 cm while nine OA were for tumours ≥6 cm. There were no significant differences between the median total anaesthetic time, postoperative complications or postoperative stay for patients undergoing LA for tumours ≥6 cm versus tumours <6 cm. Of the six conversions, five were performed for adrenal tumours ≥6 cm [local invasion (n = 3), adhesions (n = 1), primary renal carcinoma (n = 1)]. All tumours in the LA group were resected with clear margins and at a median follow up of 50 months (range 38–74 months). There has been no evidence of local recurrence. <p></p>
<b>Conclusions</b><br />
In the absence of local invasion, the outcomes of laparoscopic adrenalectomy for patients with tumours ≥6 cm were comparable to those with tumours <6 cm. This has helped confirm a policy of initial laparoscopic resection for all noninvasive adrenal tumours can be applied safely. <p></p
