    Rational design and dynamics of self-propelled colloidal bead chains: from rotators to flagella

    The quest for designing new self-propelled colloids is fuelled by the demand for simple experimental models to study the collective behaviour of their more complex natural counterparts. Most synthetic self-propelled particles move by converting the input energy into translational motion. In this work we address the question if simple self-propelled spheres can assemble into more complex structures that exhibit rotational motion, possibly coupled with translational motion as in flagella. We exploit a combination of induced dipolar interactions and a bonding step to create permanent linear bead chains, composed of self-propelled Janus spheres, with a well-controlled internal structure. Next, we study how flexibility between individual swimmers in a chain can affect its swimming behaviour. Permanent rigid chains showed only active rotational or spinning motion, whereas longer semi-flexible chains showed both translational and rotational motion resembling flagella like-motion, in the presence of the fuel. Moreover, we are able to reproduce our experimental results using numerical calculations with a minimal model, which includes full hydrodynamic interactions with the fluid. Our method is general and opens a new way to design novel self-propelled colloids with complex swimming behaviours, using different complex starting building blocks in combination with the flexibility between them.Comment: 27 pages, 10 figure

    Towards Elections with Integrity

    Since the 1990s, election observation has become a vital tool of the international community to support democracy and assess the legitimacy of governments. Observers receive better pre-deployment training and briefings, funding is more readily available, and methodologies have grown more sophisticated. Yet, as the election observation industry has become more professional, democracy is in decline.The European Union needs to be more strategic as both a donor and a provider of election observation. This policy brief, authored by the external policy team of the Open Society European Policy Institute, proposes six areas of reform, which include monitoring of the political processes leading up to polling day; improving collaboration with observers at a local level; strengthening and supporting the role played by civil society; setting stronger guidelines for the digital arena; developing guidelines for technology used; and finally, striking a new balance between the observation missions' technical and political mandates

    Empathic concern:Distinguishing between tenderness and sympathy

    The present research proposes that empathic concern, as assessed by six items of the ERQ, consists of two separate emotions, i.e., tenderness and sympathy. To test this assumption, nine studies were conducted among, in total, 1,273 participants. In these studies participants were presented with a hypothetical scenario of someone in need, after which empathic concern was assessed. Factor analyses showed that, indeed, the ERQ items that assess empathic concern can be split up in two factors, that is, one reflecting sympathy and one reflecting tenderness. In addition, in line with previous studies, our research showed that, in response to a need-situation that reflects current needs, individuals scored higher on the ERQ factor reflecting sympathy than on the ERQ factor reflecting tenderness. Findings are discussed in terms of the practical and theoretical implications of distinguishing between sympathy and tenderness

    Low-dose CT measurements of airway dimensions and emphysema associated with airflow limitation in heavy smokers:a cross sectional study

    Background: Increased airway wall thickness (AWT) and parenchymal lung destruction both contribute to airflow limitation. Advances in computed tomography (CT) post-processing imaging allow to quantify these features. The aim of this Dutch population study is to assess the relationships between AWT, lung function, emphysema and respiratory symptoms.Methods: AWT and emphysema were assessed by low-dose CT in 500 male heavy smokers, randomly selected from a lung cancer screening population. AWT was measured in each lung lobe in cross-sectionally reformatted images with an automated imaging program at locations with an internal diameter of 3.5 mm, and validated in smaller cohorts of patients. The 15th percentile method (Perc15) was used to assess the severity of emphysema. Information about respiratory symptoms and smoking behavior was collected by questionnaires and lung function by spirometry.Results: Median AWT in airways with an internal diameter of 3.5 mm (AWT(3.5)) was 0.57 (0.44 - 0.74) mm. Median AWT in subjects without symptoms was 0.52 (0.41-0.66) and in those with dyspnea and/or wheezing 0.65 (0.52-0.81) mm (pConclusions: Post processing standardization of airway wall measurements provides a reliable and useful method to assess airway wall thickness. Increased airway wall thickness contributes more to airflow limitation than emphysema in a smoking male population even after adjustment for smoking behavior.</p

    Machine learning for determining lateral flow device results for testing of SARS-CoV-2 infection in asymptomatic populations

    Rapid antigen tests, in the form of lateral flow devices (LFD) allow testing of a large population for SARS-CoV-2. To reduce the variability seen in device interpretation, we show the design and testing of an AI algorithm based on machine learning. The machine learning (ML) algorithm is trained on a combination of artificially hybridised LFDs and LFD data linked to RT-qPCR result. Participants are recruited from assisted test sites (ATS) and health care workers undertaking self-testing and images analysed using the ML algorithm. A panel of trained clinicians are used to resolve discrepancies. In total, 115,316 images are returned. In the ATS sub study, sensitivity increased from 92.08% to 97.6% and specificity from 99.85% to 99.99%. In the self-read sub-study, sensitivity increased from 16.00% to 100%, and specificity from 99.15% to 99.40%.     Seasonal and Nonseasonal Longitudinal Variation of Immune Function

    Different components of the immune response show large variability between individuals, but they also vary within the same individual because of host and environmental factors. In this study, we report an extensive analysis of the immune characteristics of 56 individuals over four timepoints in 1 single year as part of the Human Functional Genomics Project. We characterized 102 cell subsets using flow cytometry; quantified production of eight cytokines and two chemokines in response to 20 metabolic, bacterial, fungal, and viral stimuli; and measured circulating markers of inflammation. Taking advantage of the longitudinal sampling, both seasonal and nonseasonal sources of variability were studied. The circulating markers of inflammation IL-18, IL-18 binding protein, and resistin displayed clear seasonal variability, whereas the strongest effect was observed for alpha-1 antitrypsin. Cytokine production capacity also showed strong seasonal changes, especially after stimulation with the influenza virus, Borrelia burgdorferi, and Escherichia coli. Furthermore, we observed moderate seasonality effects on immune cell counts, especially in several CD4(+)/CD8(+) T cell subpopulations. Age of the volunteers was an important factor influencing IFN-gamma and IL-22 production, which matched the strong impact of age on several T cell subsets. Finally, on average, genetics accounted for almost 50% of the interindividual variance not already explained by age, sex, and body mass index, although this varies strongly for different parameters. In conclusion, seasonality is an important environmental factor that influences immune responses, in addition to specific genetic and nongenetic host factors, and this may well explain the seasonal variation in the incidence and severity of immune-mediated diseases

    Metal release from contaminated estuarine sediment under pH changes in the marine environment

    The contaminant release from estuarine sediment due to pH changes was investigated using a modified CEN/TS 14429 pH-dependence leaching test. The test is performed in the range of pH values of 0-14 using deionised water and seawater as leaching solutions. The experimental conditions mimic different circumstances of the marine environment due to the global acidification, carbon dioxide (CO2) leakages from carbon capture and sequestration technologies, and accidental chemical spills in seawater. Leaching test results using seawater as leaching solution show a better neutralisation capacity giving slightly lower metal leaching concentrations than when using deionised water. The contaminated sediment shows a low base-neutralisation capacity (BNCpH 12 = -0.44 eq/kg for deionised water and BNCpH 12 = -1.38 eq/kg for seawater) but a high acid-neutralisation capacity when using deionised water (ANCpH 4 = 3.58 eq/ kg) and seawater (ANCpH 4 = 3.97 eq/kg). Experimental results are modelled with the Visual MINTEQ geochemical software to predict metal release from sediment using both leaching liquids. Surface adsorption to iron- and aluminium- (hydr)oxides was applied for all studied elements. The consideration of the metal-organic matter binding through the NICA-Donnan model and Stockholm Humic Model for lead and copper, respectively, improves the former metal release prediction.     Lola Mora (1867-1936) fue la más halagada y discutida escultora argentina de\ud los últimos años del siglo XIX y comienzos del siglo XX. La prensa escrita de Buenos Aires\ud sigue el desarrollo de su carrera artística desde la llegada del viaje de estudios en 1900 y\ud la convierte en protagonista principal monopolizando así la atención de los cronistas. El tema\ud de este trabajo de investigación es una de sus obras más conocidas: la Fuente de las Nereidas\ud o denominada popularmente Fuente de Lola Mora, conjunto escultórico de mármol de Carrara\ud que se inaugura el 21 de mayo de 1903 en el Paseo de Julio. Esta investigación abordará\ud las cuestiones que se debatieron en torno a este conjunto escultórico en relación al\ud emplazamiento original en 1903, que lo transforma en un proceso particular ya que hasta\ud ese momento nunca se habían producido discusiones de tales características en torno a una\ud obra decorativa para la ciudad
