Double teeth in primary dentition: Report of two clinical cases
Odontogenic anomalies can occur as a result of conjoining or twinning defects. These include fusion, gemination and concrescence. This article presents two case reports of double teeth. In the first case reported, a 4 -year-old white boy presented primary double teeth associated to the absence of the right permanent mandibular lateral incisor. In the second case, a 5-year-old white girl had a family history of anomaly in primary dentition. The girl and her mother presented double teeth in the primary dentition. Her mother showed hypodontia in the permanent dentition. Extra and intra oral clinical examination was made in both cases. Radiographic analyses showed the involvement of the permanent tooth. Authors conclude that double teeth in primary dentition have to be carefully analysed as they may be associated with anomalies in the permanent dentition. Correct diagnosis of the condition implicates in a better prognosis for the patient
Long range energy transfer in conjugated polymer sequential bilayers
Steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence have been used to investigate the optical properties of bilayer and blend films made from poly(9,9-dioctyl-fluorene-2,7-diyl) (PFO) and poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH PPV). Energy transfer has been observed in both systems. From steady-state photoluminescence measurements, the energy transfer was characterized by the effective enhancement of the MEH PPV emission intensity after exciting the donor states. Relatively faster decays for the PFO donor emission have been observed in the blends as well as in the bilayer structures, confirming effective energy transfer in both structures. In contrast to the bilayers, the time decay of the acceptor emission in the blends presents a long decay component, which was assigned to the exciplex formation in these samples. For the blends the acceptor emission is in fact a composition of exciplex and MEH PPV emissions, the later being due to Forster energy transfer from PFO. In the bilayers, the exciplex is not observed and temperature dependence photoluminescence measurements show that exciton migration has no significant contribution to the energy transfer. The efficiency and very long range of the energy transfer in the bilayers is explained assuming a surface-surface interaction geometry where the donor/acceptor distances involved are much longer than the common Forster radius
CO-mediated cytoprotection is dependent on cell metabolism modulation

Endogenous CO or low concentrations of exogenous CO have been described to present several cytoprotective functions: anti-apoptosis, anti-inflammatory, vasomodulation, maintenance of homeostasis, stimulation of preconditioning and modulation of cell differentiation. The present review revises and discuss how CO regulates cell metabolism and how it is involved in the distinct cytoprotective roles of CO. The first found metabolic effect of CO was its increase on cellular ATP production, and since then much data have been generated. Mitochondria are the most described and studied cellular targets of CO. Mitochondria exposure to this gasotransmitter leads several consequences: ROS generation, stimulation of mitochondrial biogenesis, increased oxidative phosphorylation or mild uncoupling effect. Likewise, CO negatively regulates glycolysis and improves pentose phosphate pathway. More recently, CO has also been disclosed as a regulating molecule for metabolic diseases, such as obesity and diabetes with promising results.publishersversionpublishe
3-amino-1,2,4-triazole induces quick and strong fat loss in mice with high fat-induced metabolic syndrome
BACKGROUND: Obesity is a growing epidemic with limited effective treatments and an important risk factor for several diseases such as metabolic syndrome (MetS). In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (ATZ), an inhibitor of catalase and heme synthesis, in a murine model for MetS. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice with high-fat diet-induced MetS received ATZ (500 mg·kg(-1)·24 h(-1)) for 12 weeks. RESULTS: The HFD group showed increased blood pressure and body weight, enhanced fat deposition accompanied by an increase in adipocyte diameter, and decreased lipolysis in white adipose tissue (WAT). The expression of genes related to inflammation was increased in WAT of the HFD group. Concurrently, these mice exhibited an increase in leptin, nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA), insulin, and glucose in plasma, coupled with glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. Strikingly, ATZ prevented the increase in blood pressure and the HFD-induced obesity as observed by lower body weight, WAT index, triglycerides, NEFA, and leptin in plasma. ATZ treatment also prevented the HFD-induced increase in adipocyte diameter and even induced marked atrophy and the accumulation of macrophages in this tissue. ATZ treatment also improved glucose metabolism by increasing glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, GLUT4 mRNA expression in WAT in parallel to decreased insulin levels. CONCLUSIONS: In the context of HFD-induced obesity and metabolic syndrome, the fat loss induced by ATZ is probably due to heme synthesis inhibition, which blocks adipogenesis by probably decreased RevErbα activity, leading to apoptosis of adipocytes and the recruitment of macrophages. As a consequence of fat loss, ATZ elicits a beneficial systemic antiobesity effect and improves the metabolic status
Defective apoptosis in intestinal and mesenteric adipose tissue of crohn's disease patients
Background: Crohn's disease (CD) is associated with complex pathogenic pathways involving defects in apoptosis mechanisms. Recently, mesenteric adipose tissue (MAT) has been associated with CD ethiopathology, since adipose thickening is detected close to the affected intestinal area. However, the potential role of altered apoptosis in MAT of CD has not been addressed. Aims: To evaluate apoptosis in the intestinal mucosa and MAT of patients with CD. Methods: Samples of intestinal mucosa and MAT from patients with ileocecal CD and from non-inflammatory bowel diseases patients (controls) were studied. Apoptosis was assessed by TUNEL assay and correlated with the adipocytes histological morphometric analysis. The transcriptional and protein analysis of selected genes and proteins related to apoptosis were determined. Results: TUNEL assay showed fewer apoptotic cells in CD, when compared to the control groups, both in the intestinal mucosa and in MAT. In addition, the number of apoptotic cells (TUNEL) correlated significantly with the area and perimeter of the adipose cells in MAT. Transcriptomic and proteomic analysis reveal a significantly lower transcript and protein levels of Bax in the intestinal mucosa of CD, compared to the controls; low protein levels of Bax were found localized in the lamina propria and not in the epithelium of this tissue. Furthermore, higher level of Bcl-2 and low level of Caspase 3 were seen in the MAT of CD patients. Conclusion: The defective apoptosis in MAT may explain the singular morphological characteristics of this tissue in CD, which may be implicated in the pathophysiology of the disease. © 2014 Dias et al.Crohn's disease (CD) is associated with complex pathogenic pathways involving defects in apoptosis mechanisms. Epidemiological status of bovine brucellosis in the Federal District, Brazil
A study to characterize the epidemiological status of brucellosis was carried out in the Federal District of Brazil. A total of 2,019 serum samples from 278 herds were collected. In each herd, it was applied an epidemiological questionnaire focused on herd traits as well as husbandry and sanitary practices that could be associated with the risk of infection. The serum samples were screened for antibodies against Brucella spp. by the Rose-Bengal Test (RBT), and all positive sera were re-tested by the 2-mercaptoethanol test (2-ME). The herd was considered positive if at least one animal was positive on both RBT and 2-ME tests. Herd prevalence was estimated as 2.5% [1.0-5.1%] whereas animal prevalence was 0.16% [0.04-0.28%]. Given these results, that may warrant the implementation of eradication strategies, there is a case for intensifying the serological testing in the Federal District, coupled with the introduction of rapid detection methods by the dairy industries, with a view to increasing the number of accredited free herds and improving the sensitivity of the surveillance system..FAPESPCNPqSEAP-DFMAPA Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abasteciment
Environmental responsibility for sulfur dioxide emissions and associated biodiversity loss across Chinese provinces
Recent years have witnessed a growing volume in Chinese interregional
trade, along with the increasing disparities in environmental pressures.
This has prompted an increased attention on where the responsibilities
for environmental impacts should be placed. In this paper, we quantify
the environmental responsibility of SO2 emissions and biodiversity
impacts due to terrestrial acidification at the provincial level for the
first time. We examine the environmental responsibility from the
perspectives of production, consumption, and income generation by
employing a Multi-Regional Input-Output (MRIO) model for 2007, 2010, and
2012. The results indicate that ~40% of SO2 emissions were driven by
the consumption in provinces other than where the emissions discharged.
In particular, those developed provinces were net importers of SO2
emissions and mainly outsourced their emissions to nearby developing
provinces. Over the period of analysis, environmental inequality among
30 provinces was larger than GDP inequality. Furthermore, environmental
inequality continued to increase while GDP inequality decreased over the
time period. The results of a shared income- and consumption-based
responsibility approach suggest that the environmental responsibility of
SO2 emissions and biodiversity impacts for developed provinces can
reach up to ~4- to 93-fold the environmental pressure occurred within
those provinces. This indicates that under these accounting principles
the developed northern provinces in China would bear a much larger share
of the environmental responsibility.Global Challenges (FGGA)Industrial Ecolog
The extremal limits of the C-metric: Nariai, Bertotti-Robinson and anti-Nariai C-metrics
In two previous papers we have analyzed the C-metric in a background with a
cosmological constant, namely the de Sitter (dS) C-metric, and the anti-de
Sitter (AdS) C-metric, following the work of Kinnersley and Walker for the flat
C-metric. These exact solutions describe a pair of accelerated black holes in
the flat or cosmological constant background, with the acceleration A being
provided by a strut in-between that pushes away the two black holes. In this
paper we analyze the extremal limits of the C-metric in a background with
generic cosmological constant. We follow a procedure first introduced by
Ginsparg and Perry in which the Nariai solution, a spacetime which is the
direct topological product of the 2-dimensional dS and a 2-sphere, is generated
from the four-dimensional dS-Schwarzschild solution by taking an appropriate
limit, where the black hole event horizon approaches the cosmological horizon.
Similarly, one can generate the Bertotti-Robinson metric from the
Reissner-Nordstrom metric by taking the limit of the Cauchy horizon going into
the event horizon of the black hole, as well as the anti-Nariai by taking an
appropriate solution and limit. Using these methods we generate the C-metric
counterparts of the Nariai, Bertotti-Robinson and anti-Nariai solutions, among
others. One expects that the solutions found in this paper are unstable and
decay into a slightly non-extreme black hole pair accelerated by a strut or by
strings. Moreover, the Euclidean version of these solutions mediate the quantum
process of black hole pair creation, that accompanies the decay of the dS and
AdS spaces
The Landau Pole and decays in the 331 bilepton model
We calculate the decay widths and branching ratios of the extra neutral boson
predicted by the 331 bilepton model in the framework of two
different particle contents. These calculations are performed taken into
account oblique radiative corrections, and Flavor Changing Neutral Currents
(FCNC) under the ansatz of Matsuda as a texture for the quark mass matrices.
Contributions of the order of are obtained in the branching
ratios, and partial widths about one order of magnitude bigger in relation with
other non- and bilepton models are also obtained. A Landau-like pole arise at
3.5 TeV considering the full particle content of the minimal model (MM), where
the exotic sector is considered as a degenerated spectrum at 3 TeV scale. The
Landau pole problem can be avoid at the TeV scales if a new leptonic content
running below the threshold at TeV is implemented as suggested by other
authors.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, LaTeX2
