    Although individuals may have different goals and wishes on the surface, deep down we all want the same things. Our fundamental needs are universal: Regardless of culture, age, and lifestyle, everyone ultimately has the same set of needs. Needs are the basic requirements for our functioning and the nutriments for our well-being and advancement. We can only fully develop and flourish if all our basic needs are satisfied (at least to some degree), and none can be neglected without significant negative consequences. Needs are also a strong direct source of meaning and pleasure (and displeasure): events and activities that fulfil our needs are both meaningful and pleasurable. Needs and design If one thing can be said about design, it is that its relevance to the individual and to humanity at large—its purpose, meaning, success or failure—depends on the extent to which it satisfies people’s needs. Needs are the fundament of our motivation system, and all human activity is essentially fueled by the aspiration of need fulfilment. Products, systems, buildings, technology, and all other ‘artificial’ phenomena envisioned and built by people are essentially instruments for need satisfaction. 13 fundamental needs This booklet provides a typology of 13 fundamental psychological needs developed by Desmet and Fokkinga (2020). Each page shows a need and four corresponding sub-needs. These sub-needs illustrate the range and scope of the fundamental needs. Even though they are themselves not fundamental, they still represent relatively universal and general concepts. The (sub-) needs can, in turn, take shape as and through goals and desires that are specific to particular individuals and/or situations. You can use the overview as a source of design inspiration or, if you like, as a means to explore your personal happiness

    The Kelvin generator is an amazing electrostatic device which poses many questions. The authors report the results of their investigations of this device under various controlled conditions with both nonpolar and polar liquids and a sodium chloride aqueous solution. They have found that the generator works well even if the two liquid streams originate from different electrically insulated reservoirs. In addition they propose a model in which the electric charge results from the separation of the hydrogen and hydroxyl ions as the water droplets form

    This report describes a clinical case of chronic monocytic ehrlichiosis in a dog that originated from Spain. The patient was presented with chronic unilateral epistaxis. Hematologic and biochemical abnormalities namely anemia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, lymphocytosis, hyperproteinemia, hypoalbuminemia and hypergammaglobulinemia together with the anamnesis, suggested an infection with Ehrlichia canis. Although gammopathy caused by ehrlichiosis is usually polyclonal, serum protein electrophoresis revealed a monoclonal gammopathy. E.canis titers were strongly positive. The dog was treated with doxycycline for a period of eight weeks, which led to resolution of the clinical signs and laboratory abnormalities, except for persistent hyperproteinemia. Proteinuria was recognized one year later. This was probably due to glomerular damage as a result of chronic ehrlichiosis. Combination therapy with doxycycline, a low protein diet, an ACE-inhibitor and acetylsalicylic acid lead to a significant reduction in the magnitude of proteinuria

    Finite element analysis enhanced with subdivision surface boundary representations

    In this work we develop a design-through-analysis methodology by extending the concept of the NURBS-enhanced finite element method (NEFEM) to volumes bounded by Catmull-Clark subdivision surfaces. The representation of the boundary as a single watertight manifold facilitates the generation of an external curved triangular mesh, which is subsequently used to generate the interior volumetric mesh. Following the NEFEM framework, the basis functions are defined in the physical space and the numerical integration is realized with a special mapping which takes into account the exact definition of the boundary. Furthermore, an appropriate quadrature strategy is proposed to deal with the integration of elements adjacent to extraordinary vertices (EVs). Both theoretical and practical aspects of the implementation are discussed and are supported with numerical examples.</p

    Privacy threat model in lifelogging

    The lifelogging activity enables a user, the lifelogger, to passively capture multimodal records from a first-person perspective and ultimately create a visual diary encompassing every possible aspect of her life with unprecedented details. In recent years it has gained popularity among different groups of users. However, the possibility of ubiquitous presence of lifelogging devices especially in private spheres has raised serious concerns with respect to personal privacy. Different practitioners and active researchers in the field of lifelogging have analysed the issue of privacy in lifelogging and proposed different mitigation strategies. However, none of the existing works has considered a well-defined privacy threat model in the domain of lifelogging. Without a proper threat model, any analysis and discussion of privacy threats in lifelogging remains incomplete. In this paper we aim to fill in this gap by introducing a first-ever privacy threat model identifying several threats with respect to lifelogging. We believe that the introduced threat model will be an essential tool and will act as the basis for any further research within this domain

    Abstract A heat transfer measurement technique based on the combination of infrared thermography and numerical computation is presented in the case of a turbulent reattachment downstream of a backwardfacing step. The presence of a CaF2 window and low surface temperatures has led to develop a specific infrared system calibration.     Taking the customer into account in collaborative design

    This article describes the improvement of a model of collaborative design for the ceramic industry. A new stakeholder playing a crucial role is now included in the design process, i.e. the customer. Specifically, we present a pilot validation study for the framework that aims to analyse how the environment, experiences and reference criteria of different types of the customers (commercial dealers, final users, architects and interior designers, etc.) can affect their preferences. Information about these customer preferences could be very useful for designers during the early stages of product development. A multidisciplinary approach to the problem can introduce substantial improvements in defining a truly collaborative design chain
