Turbulent kinetic energy in the energy balance of a solar flare

    Get PDF
The energy released in solar flares derives from a reconfiguration of magnetic fields to a lower energy state, and is manifested in several forms, including bulk kinetic energy of the coronal mass ejection, acceleration of electrons and ions, and enhanced thermal energy that is ultimately radiated away across the electromagnetic spectrum from optical to X-rays. Using an unprecedented set of coordinated observations, from a suite of instruments, we here report on a hitherto largely overlooked energy component -- the kinetic energy associated with small-scale turbulent mass motions. We show that the spatial location of, and timing of the peak in, turbulent kinetic energy together provide persuasive evidence that turbulent energy may play a key role in the transfer of energy in solar flares. Although the kinetic energy of turbulent motions accounts, at any given time, for only \sim (0.5-1)\% of the energy released, its relatively rapid (\sim1-10~s) energization and dissipation causes the associated throughput of energy (i.e., power) to rival that of major components of the released energy in solar flares, and thus presumably in other astrophysical acceleration sites

In an earlier paper we developed the algebraic theory of matrix polynomials. Here we introduce two algorithms for computing "dominant" solvents. Global convergence of the algorithms under certain conditions is established

A Variable Metric Variant of the Karmarkar Algorithm for Linear Programming

    Get PDF
The most time-consuming part of the Karmarkar algorithm for linear programming is the projection of a vector onto the nullspace of a matrix that changes at each iteration. We present a variant of the Karmarkar algorithm that uses standard variable-metric techniques in an innovative way to approximate this projection. In limited tests, this modification greatly reduces the number of matrix factorizations needed for the solution of linear programming problems

Abundance and evolution of galaxy clusters in cosmological models with massive neutrino

The time evolution of the number density of galaxy clusters and their mass and temperature functions are used to constrain cosmological parameters in the spatially flat dark matter models containing a fraction of hot particles (massive neutrino) additional to cold and baryonic matter. We test the modified MDM models with cosmic gravitational waves and show that they neither pass the cluster evolution test nor reproduce the observed height of the first acoustic peak in ΔT/T\Delta T/T spectrum, and therefore should be ruled out. The models with a non-zero cosmological constant are in better agreement with observations. We estimate the free cosmological parameters in Λ\LambdaMDM with a negligible abundance of gravitational waves, and find that within the parameter ranges h(0.6,0.7)h\in (0.6, 0.7), n(0.9,1.1)n\in (0.9, 1.1), (i) the value of ΩΛ\Omega_\Lambda is strongly affected by a small fraction of hot dark matter, fνΩν/Ωm(0,0.2)f_\nu\equiv\Omega_\nu /\Omega_m\in (0, 0.2): 0.45<ΩΛ<0.70.45 <\Omega_\Lambda <0.7 (1σ1\sigma CL), and (ii) the redshift evolution of galaxy clusters alone reveals the following explicit correlation between ΩΛ\Omega_\Lambda and fνf_\nu: ΩΛ+0.5fν=0.65±0.1\Omega_\Lambda +0.5f_\nu =0.65\pm 0.1. The present accuracy of observational data allows only to bound the fraction of hot matter, fν(0,0.2)f_\nu\in (0, 0.2) (the number of massive neutrino species remains undelimited, Nν=1,2,3N_\nu =1, 2, 3).Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, submitted in A&

Homdyn Study for the Lcls RF Photo-Injector

    Get PDF
The authors report the results of a recent beam dynamics study, motivated by the need to redesign the LCLS photoinjector, that led to the discovery of a new effective working point for a split RF photoinjector. The HOMDYN code, the main simulation tool adopted in this work, is described together with its recent improvements. The new working point and its LCLS application is discussed. Validation tests of the HOMDYN model and low emittance predictions, 0.3 mm-mrad for a 1 nC flat top bunch, are performed with respect to the multi-particle tracking codes ITACA and PARMELA

    The Fragility of Quantum Information?

We address the question whether there is a fundamental reason why quantum information is more fragile than classical information. We show that some answers can be found by considering the existence of quantum memories and their dimensional dependence.Comment: Essay on quantum information: no new results. Composite magnetostrictive materials for advanced automotive magnetomechanical sensors

    No full text
In this paper we present the development of a composite magnetostrictive material for automotive applications. The material is based on cobalt ferrite, CoO×Fe₂O₃, and contains a small fraction of metallic matrix phase that serves both as a liquid phase sintering aid during processing and enhances the mechanical properties over those of a simple sintered ferrite ceramic. In addition the metal matrix makes it possible to braze the material making the assembly of a sensor relatively simple. The material exhibits good sensitivity and should have high corrosion resistance while at the same time it is low cost

Predicting emotions and meta-emotions at the movies

    Get PDF
Audiences are attracted to dramas and horror movies even though negative and ambivalent emotions are likely to be experienced. Research into the seemingly paradoxical enjoyment of this kind of media entertainment has typically focused on gender- and genre-specific needs and viewing motivations. Extending this line of research, the authors focus the role of the need for affect as a more general, gender- and genre-independent predictor of individual differences in the experience of emotions and meta-emotions (i.e., evaluative thoughts and feelings about one’s emotions). The article discusses a field study of moviegoers who attended the regular screening of a drama or a horror film. Results support the assumption that individuals high in need for affect experience higher levels of negative and ambivalent emotions and evaluate their emotions more positively on the level of meta-emotions. Controlling for the Big Five personality factors does not alter these effects. The results are discussed within an extended meta-emotion framework

6-methylmercaptopurine-induced leukocytopenia during thiopurine therapy in inflammatory bowel disease patients

    Get PDF
Background and Aim: Thiopurines have a favorable benefit–risk ratio in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. A feared adverse event of thiopurine therapy is myelotoxicity, mostly occurring due to toxic concentrations of the pharmacologically active metabolites 6-thioguaninenucleotides. In oncology, myelosuppression has also been associated with elevated 6-methylmercaptopurine (6-MMP). In this case series, we provide a detailed overview of 6-MMP-induced myelotoxicity in inflammatory bowel disease patients. Methods: We retrospectively scrutinized pharmacological laboratory databases of five participating centers over a 5-year period. Patients with leukocytopenia at time of elevated 6-MMP levels (>5700 pmol/8 × 108 red blood cells) were included for detailed chart review. Results: In this case series, we describe demographic, clinical, and pharmacological aspects of 24 cases of 6-MMP-induced myelotoxicity on weight-based thiopurine therapy with a median steady-state 6-MMP level of 14 500 pmol/8 × 108 red blood cells (range 6600–48 000). All patients developed leukocytopenia (white blood cell count 2.7 ± 0.9 × 109/L) after a median period of 11 weeks after initiation of thiopurine therapy (interquartile range 6–46 weeks). Eighteen patients (75%) developed concurrent anemia (median hemoglobin concentration 6.9 × 109/L), and four patients developed concurrent thrombocytopenia (median platelet count 104 × 109/L). Leukocytopenia resolved in 20 patients (83%) within 4 weeks upon altered thiopurine treatment regimen, and white blood cell count was increasing, but not yet normalized, in the remaining four patients. Conclusion: We observed that thiopurine-induced myelotoxicity also occurs because of (extremely) high 6-MMP concentrations in patients with a skewed thiopurine metabolism. Continued treatment with adapted thiopurine therapy was successful in almost all patients
