    A U-statistic estimator for the variance of resampling-based error estimators

    We revisit resampling procedures for error estimation in binary classification in terms of U-statistics. In particular, we exploit the fact that the error rate estimator involving all learning-testing splits is a U-statistic. Therefore, several standard theorems on properties of U-statistics apply. In particular, it has minimal variance among all unbiased estimators and is asymptotically normally distributed. Moreover, there is an unbiased estimator for this minimal variance if the total sample size is at least the double learning set size plus two. In this case, we exhibit such an estimator which is another U-statistic. It enjoys, again, various optimality properties and yields an asymptotically exact hypothesis test of the equality of error rates when two learning algorithms are compared. Our statements apply to any deterministic learning algorithms under weak non-degeneracy assumptions. In an application to tuning parameter choice in lasso regression on a gene expression data set, the test does not reject the null hypothesis of equal rates between two different parameters

    Modification of the simple mass balance equation for calculation of critical loads of acidity.

    Over the last few years, the simple mass balance equation for the calculation of critical loads of acidity has been gradually modified as the underlying critical load concepts have developed and as problems with particular forms of the equation have been identified, through application in particular countries. The first major update of the equation took place following a workshop held in Vienna, Austria (Hojesky et al. 1993). The workshop was held to discuss problems which had been identified when the then current form of the equation was applied in countries with high rainfall. The problems had largely arisen because of simplifications and assumptions incorporated into the early formulation of the equation. The equation was reformulated to overcome the problems identified at the workshop. However, further problems were identified when the reformulated equation was applied in the UK in situations with a combination of high rainfall, large marine inputs and widespread occurrence of organic soils. A small workshop was, therefore held in Grange-over-Sands, UK in late 1993 to dicuss the problems and to further re-evaluate the equation. The problems had arisen in the UK because of simplifications and assumptions made in the formulation concerning, in particular, cation leaching and uptake. As a result, a more rigorous treatment of these variables was incorporated into the equation. The reformulation of the equation, as derived at the September 1993 workshop is described below

    The “pinhão” is the seed of Araucaria angustifolia (known as Paraná pine). This specie is in danger due to reckless exploration. Thus, the development of new applications could motivate its preservation. Samples of native “pinhão” starch were oxidized with standard NaClO solutions (0.1, 0.2 and 0.5 mol L-1) and exposed for one hour under UV light (UVC radiation with ? = 256 nm).     Effect of the KMnO4 treatment on the "pinhão" starch.

    O pinhão, sementes de Araucaria angustifolia, tem o amido como componente principal. Os amidos oxidados melhoram as características físico-química, de pasta e térmicas dos produtos em processos industriais. O amido de pinhão nativo foi tratado com soluções padronizadas de permanganato de potássio (KMnO4) e as amostras foram analisadas por técnicas termoanalíticas (TG-DTA) em atmosfera inerte. As amostras foram oxidadas da seguinte forma: quatro porções de 20 g (base seca) foram separadas e três foram suspensas em solução de KMnO4 (0,001; 0,002; 0,005 mol L-1) em agitação constante durante 30 minutos, a quarta amostra foi mantida como recebida. As suspensões de amido foram filtradas, lavadas, secas e analisadas. As modificações oxidativas provocaram mudanças estruturais das moléculas de amido, registradas pelos diferentes resultados calculados a partir das curvas TGA e DTA. A amostra (3) teve as mudanças mais significativas na degradação com o 3ª evento exotérmico com temperaturas acima de 330 °C

    Rotational alignment effects in NO(X) + Ar inelastic collisions: A theoretical study

    Rotational angular momentum alignment effects in the rotational inelastic scattering of NO(X) with Ar have been investigated by means of close-coupled quantum mechanical, quasi-classical trajectory, and Monte Carlo hard shell scattering calculations. It has been shown that the hard shell nature of the interaction potential at a collision energy of Ecoll = 66 meV is primarily responsible for the rotational alignment of the NO(X) molecule after collision. By contrast, the alternating trend in the quantum mechanical parity resolved alignment parameters with change in rotational state Δj reflects differences in the differential cross sections for NO(X) parity conserving and changing collisions, rather than an underlying difference in the collision induced rotational alignment. This suggests that the rotational alignment and the differential cross sections are sensitive to rather different aspects of the scattering dynamics. The applicability of the kinematic apse model has also been tested and found to be in excellent agreement with exact quantum mechanical scattering theory provided the collision energy is in reasonable excess of the well depth of the NO(X)-Ar potential energy surface

    Peanut allergy:effect of environmental peanut exposure in children with filaggrin loss-of-function mutations

    BackgroundFilaggrin (FLG) loss-of-function mutations lead to an impaired skin barrier associated with peanut allergy. Household peanut consumption is associated with peanut allergy, and peanut allergen in household dust correlates with household peanut consumption.ObjectiveWe sought to determine whether environmental peanut exposure increases the odds of peanut allergy and whether FLG mutations modulate these odds.MethodsExposure to peanut antigen in dust within the first year of life was measured in a population-based birth cohort. Peanut sensitization and peanut allergy (defined by using oral food challenges or component-resolved diagnostics [CRD]) were assessed at 8 and 11 years. Genotyping was performed for 6 FLG mutations.ResultsAfter adjustment for infantile atopic dermatitis and preceding egg skin prick test (SPT) sensitization, we found a strong and significant interaction between natural log (ln [loge]) peanut dust levels and FLG mutations on peanut sensitization and peanut allergy. Among children with FLG mutations, for each ln unit increase in the house dust peanut protein level, there was a more than 6-fold increased odds of peanut SPT sensitization, CRD sensitization, or both in children at ages 8 years, 11 years, or both and a greater than 3-fold increased odds of peanut allergy compared with odds seen in children with wild-type FLG. There was no significant effect of exposure in children without FLG mutations. In children carrying an FLG mutation, the threshold level for peanut SPT sensitization was 0.92 μg of peanut protein per gram (95% CI, 0.70-1.22 μg/g), that for CRD sensitization was 1.03 μg/g (95% CI, 0.90-1.82 μg/g), and that for peanut allergy was 1.17 μg/g (95% CI, 0.01-163.83 μg/g).ConclusionEarly-life environmental peanut exposure is associated with an increased risk of peanut sensitization and allergy in children who carry an FLG mutation. These data support the hypothesis that peanut allergy develops through transcutaneous sensitization in children with an impaired skin barrier

    Evaluation of double treated starches using thermal tools.

    Starch is the main polysaccharide found in cereals, composed by amylose and amylopectin. Corn is the principal source of starches worldwide. Starches treatment, through physical, chemical and/or biological methods, can improve the applications range. Acid modification in alcoholic solution promotes minimally degradation in the granule. Ball mill is one physical method poorly explored. The aim was to treat the starches using HCl 0.5 mol L-1 for 1 hour in 100 ml of aqueous, ethanol or methanol solutions with subsequent ball milling processes. One sample was selected as native sample. The four others, one native sample and three acid modified samples, were treated by physical process with the oscillating ball mill. The DTG-60H equipment was used for the TG and DTA analysis. The TG curves showed three mass losses related to dehydration, decomposition and oxidation. The native sample without physical modification showed major resistance to total degradation. This occurs because the physical modification cleaves hydrogen bonds, leaving a weakened granule. The TGDTA results showed that the mass loss in the 2nd event was minor in the hydrolyzed samples compared with native samples. The acid modification can provide starch higher resistance to degradation up to 340 °C. These results showed that chemical and physical treatment changed the thermal behaviors of the starches

    Deciphering the trophic interaction between Akkermansia muciniphila and the butyrogenic gut commensal Anaerostipes caccae using a metatranscriptomic approach

    Host glycans are paramount in regulating the symbiotic relationship between humans and their gut bacteria. The constant flux of host-secreted mucin at the mucosal layer creates a steady niche for bacterial colonization. Mucin degradation by keystone species subsequently shapes the microbial community. This study investigated the transcriptional response during mucin-driven trophic interaction between the specialised mucin-degrader Akkermansia muciniphila and a butyrogenic gut commensal Anaerostipes caccae. A. muciniphila monocultures and co-cultures with non-mucolytic A. caccae from the Lachnospiraceae family were grown anaerobically in minimal media supplemented with mucin. We analysed for growth, metabolites (HPLC analysis), microbial composition (quantitative reverse transcription PCR), and transcriptional response (RNA-seq). Mucin degradation by A. muciniphila supported the growth of A. caccae and concomitant butyrate production predominantly via the acetyl-CoA pathway. Differential expression analysis (DESeq 2) showed the presence of A. caccae induced changes in the A. muciniphila transcriptional response with increased expression of mucin degradation genes and reduced expression of ribosomal genes. Two putative operons that encode for uncharacterised proteins and an efflux system, and several two-component systems were also differentially regulated. This indicated A. muciniphila changed its transcriptional regulation in response to A. caccae. This study provides insight to understand the mucin-driven microbial ecology using metatranscriptomics. Our findings show that the expression of mucolytic enzymes by A. muciniphila increases upon the presence of a community member. This could indicate its role as a keystone species that supports the microbial community in the mucosal environment by increasing the availability of mucin sugars.Peer reviewe

    Effect of acid alcoholic solution in waxy maize starch treatment.

    O amido é o polissacarídeo mais abundante presente em plantas, composto por amilose e amilopectina. O amido de milho ceroso apresenta somente amilopectina. A modificação do amido é recomendada para melhorar suas aplicações. A hidrólise ácida é utilizada para alterar as propriedades físico-químicas sem modificar o grânulo e o meio alcoólico ajuda na recuperação da molécula após o tratamento. O objetivo do trabalho foi o tratamento químico com HCl 0,5 mol L-1 durante 1 hora em 100 ml de água, etanol ou metanol. Os equipamentos SETSYS Evolução TGADTA / DSC e Rápido Visco-Analisador (RVA-4) foram usados para avaliar as alterações dos amidos. As curvas TG mostraram três eventos (desidratação, estabilidade e decomposição), com resultados similares para todas as amostras. Este resultado pode estar relacionado a resistência da amilopectina para a hidrólise ácida. Na análise reológica (RVA) o tratamento das amostras mostrou valores mais baixos de perfis de viscosidade. A solução ácida forneceu mudanças nas propriedades de pasta do amido e a solução etanólica (solvente mais apolar) foi maior que as demais soluções. Conclui-se portanto que o tratamento dos amidos forneceu produtos com características térmicas similares e com diferentes respostas mecânica
