Senior thesis, Kansas State Agricultural College, 1903.Morse Department of Special CollectionsIntroduction: Introduction: It was our intention upon taking up this subject for ta thesis, to deal mainly with beams of various cross-section; to ascertain their transverse strength and the effect of the shape of the sections chosen upon this strength, but owing to unforeseen difficulties which prevented the foundry from maintaining their usual supply of iron, it was impossible to cast the specimens and so we were limited almost entirely to tests in compression and tension, using the common test bars on hand and those specimens that we could turn from them. The first test made was that of finding the relative strength of cast iron, in tension and compression. For this purpose specimens were turned three-fourths of an inch in diameter and one and a half inches long, five specimens being tested in compression and five in tension. The average breaking lad of the specimens tested in tension was 21,852 pounds per square inch, and for those in compression 112,473 pounds per square inch this giving the ratio of the breaking load in tension to the breaking lad in compression as 1 is to 5.147. Results of this test are shown in table number one. The second test (results shown in table number two) was made with turned bars in tension, sixteen specimens being broken in all; six of the shapes shown by figure one, four like figure two, three like figure three and three like figure four. The first specimen was simply a turned bar, the finished surface being of no specified length and the shoulders lift round. In the second a V shaped cut was made in the surface of the bar with a diamond nose lathe tool. The third specimen was treated the same as the second except that in place of the diamond nose a round nose tool was used, cutting a U shaped groove

    Performance of a Braced Excavation in Siltstone

    A case history and analysis are presented of a 76-foot deep braced excavation in competent silt- and claystone formations. Soldier piles and lagging were supported by three levels of struts above three levels of tie-backs. During construction, measured strut loads exceeded design levels by up to 100 percent, and additional struts were installed in the upper portion of the excavation. Back analysis performed after construction indicated that large horizontal insitu stresses (Ko= 1) in the region had contributed to the overloading. It was also shown that the problem had been compounded by the practice of pre loading the struts upon installation. The analysis further indicated that for excavations in competent, rock-like materials, excess strut loads can be safely relieved by allowing small elastic deflections of the excavation walls to take place. A simple design scheme is suggested which would allow such deformations without adversely affecting the overall performance of the excavation support system

    K-space data processing for Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE)

    International audienceObject: Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE) requires substantial data processing based on phase image reconstruction, wave enhancement and inverse problem solving. The objective of this study is to propose a new, fast MRE method based on MR raw data processing, particularly adapted to applications requiring fast MRE measurement or high elastogram update rate.Material and Methods: The proposed method allows measuring tissue elasticity directly from raw data without prior phase image reconstruction and without phase unwrapping. Experimental feasibility is assessed both in a gelatin phantom and in the liver of a porcine model in vivo. Elastograms are reconstructed with the raw MRE method and compared to those obtained using conventional MRE. In a third experiment, changes in elasticity are monitored in real-time in a gelatin phantom during its solidification by using both conventional MRE and raw MRE.Results: The raw MRE method shows promising results by providing similar elasticity values to the ones obtained with conventional MRE methods while decreasing the number of processing steps and circumventing the delicate step of phase unwrapping. Limitations of the proposed method are the influence of the magnitude on the elastogram and the requirement for a minimum number of phase offsets.Conclusion: This study demonstrates the feasibility of directly reconstructing elastograms from raw data

    Fresh Activity in Old Systems: Radio AGN in Fossil Groups of Galaxies

    We present the first systematic 1.4 GHz Very Large Array radio continuum survey of fossil galaxy group candidates. These are virialized systems believed to have assembled over a gigayear in the past through the merging of galaxy group members into a single, isolated, massive elliptical galaxy and featuring an extended hot X-ray halo. We use new photometric and spectroscopic data from SDSS Data Release 7 to determine that three of the candidates are clearly not fossil groups. Of the remaining 30 candidates, 67% contain a radio-loud (L_1.4GHz > 10^23 W Hz^-1) active galactic nucleus (AGN) at the center of their dominant elliptical galaxy. We find a weak correlation between the radio luminosity of the AGN and the X-ray luminosity of the halo suggesting that the AGN contributes to energy deposition into the intragroup medium. We only find a correlation between the radio and optical luminosity of the central elliptical galaxy when we include X-ray selected, elliptically dominated non-fossil groups, indicating a weak relationship between AGN strength and the mass assembly history of the groups. The dominant elliptical galaxy of fossil groups is on average roughly an order of magnitude more luminous than normal group elliptical galaxies in optical, X-ray, and radio luminosities and our findings are consistent with previous results that the radio-loud fraction in elliptical galaxies is linked to the stellar mass of a population. The current level of activity in fossil groups suggests that AGN fueling continues long after the last major merger. We discuss several possibilities for fueling the AGN at the present epoch.Comment: Accepted for publication in A

    Interventional MR Elastography for MRI-Guided Percutaneous Procedures

    International audiencePURPOSE : MRI-guided thermal ablations require reliable monitoring methods to ensure complete destruction of the diseased tissue while avoiding damage to the surrounding healthy tissue. Based on the fact that thermal ablations result in substantial changes in biomechanical properties, interventional MR elastography (MRE) dedicated to the monitoring of MR-guided thermal therapies is proposed here. METHODS : Interventional MRE consists of a needle MRE driver, a fast and interactive gradient echo pulse sequence with motion encoding, and an inverse problem solver in real-time. This complete protocol was tested in vivo on swine and the ability to monitor elasticity changes in real-time was assessed in phantom. RESULTS : Thanks to a short repetition time, a reduction of the number of phase-offsets and the use of a sliding window, one refreshed elastogram was provided every 2.56 s for an excitation frequency of 100 Hz. In vivo elastograms of swine liver were successfully provided in real-time during one breath-hold. Changes of elasticity were successfully monitored in a phantom during its gelation with the same elastogram frame rate. CONCLUSION : This study demonstrates the ability of detecting elasticity changes in real-time and providing elastograms in vivo with interventional MRE that could be used for the monitoring of thermal ablations

    Star Clusters in the Nearby Late-Type Galaxy NGC 1311

    Ultraviolet, optical and near infrared images of the nearby (D ~ 5.5 Mpc) SBm galaxy NGC 1311, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope, reveal a small population of 13 candidate star clusters. We identify candidate star clusters based on a combination of their luminosity, extent and spectral energy distribution. The masses of the cluster candidates range from ~1000 up to ~100000 Solar masses, and show a strong positive trend of larger mass with increasing with cluster age. Such a trend follows from the fading and dissolution of old, low-mass clusters, and the lack of any young super star clusters of the sort often formed in strong starbursts. The cluster age distribution is consistent with a bursting mode of cluster formation, with active episodes of age ~10 Myr, ~100 Myr and ~1 Gyr. The ranges of age and mass we probe are consistent with those of the star clusters found in quiescent Local Group dwarf galaxies.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, accepted by A

    The antiproliferative activity of kinase inhibitors in chronic myeloid leukemia cells is mediated by FOXO transcription factors

    Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is initiated and maintained by the tyrosine kinase BCR-ABL which activates a number of signal transduction pathways, including PI3K/AKT signaling and consequently inactivates FOXO transcription factors. ABL-specific tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) induce minimal apoptosis in CML progenitor cells, yet exert potent antiproliferative effects, through as yet poorly understood mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate that in CD34+ CML cells, FOXO1 and 3a are inactivated and relocalized to the cytoplasm by BCR-ABL activity. TKIs caused a decrease in phosphorylation of FOXOs, leading to their relocalization from cytoplasm (inactive) to nucleus (active), where they modulated the expression of key FOXO target genes, such as Cyclin D1, ATM, CDKN1C, and BCL6 and induced G1 arrest. Activation of FOXO1 and 3a and a decreased expression of their target gene Cyclin D1 were also observed after 6 days of in vivo treatment with dasatinib in a CML transgenic mouse model. The over-expression of FOXO3a in CML cells combined with TKIs to reduce proliferation, with similar results seen for inhibitors of PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling. While stable expression of an active FOXO3a mutant induced a similar level of quiescence to TKIs alone, shRNA-mediated knockdown of FOXO3a drove CML cells into cell cycle and potentiated TKI-induced apoptosis. These data demonstrate that TKI-induced G1 arrest in CML cells is mediated through inhibition of the PI3K/AKT pathway and reactivation of FOXOs. This enhanced understanding of TKI activity and induced progenitor cell quiescence suggests that new therapeutic strategies for CML should focus on manipulation of this signaling network

    Driving and sustaining culture change in professional sport performance teams: A grounded theory

    Objectives As part of the recent upsurge of work on management and organizational factors in elite sports teams, researchers have focused on the team management-led creation and regulation of high performing cultures. The purpose of this study was to therefore add to a recently developed model of culture change best practice in Olympic sports teams, as led and perceived by incoming performance directors, and conceptualize culture change best practice in professional sports teams, as led and perceived by incoming team managers. Design and method A pragmatic research philosophy and corresponding grounded theory methodology were used to generate a practically-meaningful model of this culture change process from the perspective of UK-based professional team managers. Results Perceived best practice in team manager-led culture change was found to involve a finite phase of initial evaluation, planning, and impact adjoined to the enduring management of a holistic, integrated, and dynamic social system. With the former process acting as the catalyst for successful change, this model revealed that optimal change was felt to primarily rely on the constant acquisition, negotiation, and alignment of internal and external stakeholder perceptions. Conclusions Based on the model's principles, the optimization of professional team culture is defined by a manager's initial actions and never definitively achieved but rather constantly constructed and re-constructed in complex social and power dynamics. Beyond providing a conceptual backdrop for continued research in this area, the model is also a tool on which the practice of professional team managers and their supporting sport psychologists can be based

    Deep Near-IR Surface Photometry of 57 Galaxies in the Local Sphere of Influence

    We present H-band surface photometry of 57 galaxies drawn from the Local Sphere of Influence (LSI) with distances of less than 10 Mpc from the Milky Way. The images with a typical surface brightness limit 4 mag fainter than 2MASS (24.5 mag arcsec^-2 < sb_lim < 26 mag arcsec ^-2) have been obtained with IRIS2 on the 3.9 m Anglo-Australian Telescope. A total of 22 galaxies that remained previously undetected in the near-IR and potentially could have been genuinely young galaxies were found to have an old stellar population with a star density 1-2 magnitudes below the 2MASS detection threshold. The cleaned near-IR images reveal the morphology and extent of many of the galaxies for the first time. For all program galaxies, we derive radial luminosity profiles, ellipticities, and position angles, together with global parameters such as total magnitude, mean effective surface brightness and half-light radius. Our results show that 2MASS underestimates the total magnitude of galaxies with _eff between 18-21 mag arcsec^-2 by up to 2.5 mag. The Sersic parameters best describing the observed surface brightness profiles are also presented. Adopting accurate galaxy distances and a H-band mass-to-light ratio of Upsilon_H=1.0 +/- 0.4, the LSI galaxies are found to cover a stellar mass range of 5.6 < log_10 (M_stars) < 11.1. The results are discussed along with previously obtained optical data. Our sample of low luminosity galaxies is found to follow closely the optical-infrared B versus H luminosity relation defined by brighter galaxies with a slope of 1.14 +/- 0.02 and scatter of 0.3 magnitudes. Finally we analyse the luminosity - surface brightness relation to determine an empirical mass-to-light ratio of Upsilon_H=0.78 +/- 0.08 for late-type galaxies in the H-band.Comment: Accepted by AJ.
