    Quantum Fluctuations of Radiation Pressure

    Quantum fluctuations of electromagnetic radiation pressure are discussed. We use an approach based on the quantum stress tensor to calculate the fluctuations in velocity and position of a mirror subjected to electromagnetic radiation. Our approach reveals that radiation pressure fluctuations are due to a cross term between vacuum and state dependent terms in a stress tensor operator product. Thus observation of these fluctuations would entail experimental confirmation of this cross term. We first analyze the pressure fluctuations on a single, perfectly reflecting mirror, and then study the case of an interferometer. This involves a study of the effects of multiple bounces in one arm, as well as the correlations of the pressure fluctuations between arms of the interferometer.     Predicting the influence of strain on crack length measurements performed using the potential drop method

    The potential drop (PD) crack growth measurement technique is sensitive to strain accumulation which is often erroneously interpreted as crack extension. When testing ductile materials these errors can be significant, but in many cases the optimum method of minimising or supressing them remains unknown because it is extremely difficult to measure them experimentally in isolation from other sources of error, such non-ideal crack morphology. In this work a novel method of assessing the influence of strain on PD, using a sequentially coupled structural electrical finite element (FE) model, has been developed. By comparing the FE predictions with experimental data it has been demonstrated that the proposed FE technique is extremely effective at predicting trends in PD due to strain. It has been used to identify optimum PD configurations for compact tension, C(T), and single edge notched tension, SEN(T), fracture mechanics specimens and it has been demonstrated that the PD configuration often recommended for C(T) specimens can be subject to large errors due to strain accumulation. In addition, the FE technique has been employed to assess the significance of strain after the initiation of stable tearing for a monotonically loaded C(T) specimen. The proposed FE technique provides a powerful tool for optimising the measurement of crack initiation and growth in applications where large strains are present, e.g. J-R curve and creep crack growth testing

    How to Undertake a Clinically Relevant Systematic Review in a Rapidly Evolving Field: Magnetic Resonance Angiography

    Objectives: The aim was to determine which generations of the evolving technology of magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) are currently of clinical relevance in two clinical applications. Our purpose was to plan a systematic review that would be valuable both to purchasers driven by cost-effectiveness and to practicing clinicians. Methods: Information was gathered from a search of major bibliographic databases, from a short questionnaire sent to 500 U.K. vascular radiologists and vascular surgeons, and from local clinical The authors thank A. We asked which of the MRA techniques were currently used and, assuming availability, what would be their technique of choice. Results: There were 206 published articles that satisfied preliminary inclusion criteria: 69 discussed 2D time of flight (TOF); 47, 3D TOF; and 38, contrast-enhanced techniques. There were 162 questionnaires returned (60 radiologists, 102 surgeons). Of the total respondents, 77/162 (48%) used MRA in the assessment of carotid artery stenosis; 47/77 (61%) used 2D TOF; 32/77 (42%), 3D TOF; and 26/77 (34%), contrast-enhanced techniques. Thirty-five of 162 (22%) respondents used MRA in the assessment of peripheral vascular disease (PVD); 15/35 (43%) used 2D TOF, 4/35 (11%) used 3D TOF, and 22/35 (63%) used contrast-enhanced techniques. For those wishing to use MRA, contrast-enhanced techniques were the method of choice. Conclusions: The TOF methods that represent earlier generations of the technology remain clinically relevant, and will therefore be included in our systematic review. To ensure complete and relevant coverage in reviews of other evolving technologies, it would be advisable to obtain data for guidance in a similar way

    Use of magnetic resonance angiography to select candidates with recently symptomatic carotid stenosis for surgery: systematic review

    Objective To determine if sufficient evidence exists to support the use of magnetic resonance angiography as a means of selecting patients with recently symptomatic high grade carotid stenosis for surgery. Design Systematic review of published research on the diagnostic performance of magnetic resonance angiography, 1990-9. Main outcome measures Performance characteristics of diagnostic test. Results 126 potentially relevant articles were identified, but many articles failed to examine die performance of magnetic resonance angiography as a diagnostic test at the surgical decision thresholds used in major clinical trials on endarterectomy. 26 articles were included in a meta-analysis that showed a maximal joint sensitivity and specificity of 99% (95% confidence interval 98% to 100%) for identifying 70-99% stenosis and 90% (81% to 99%) for identifying 50-99% stenosis. Only four articles evaluated contrast enhanced magnetic resonance angiography. Conclusions Magnetic resonance angiography is accurate for selecting patients for carotid endarterectomy at the surgical decision thresholds established in the major endarterectomy trials, but the evidence is not very robust because of the heterogeneity of the studies included.     Accuracy of cornea and lens biometry using anterior segment optical coherence tomography

    We assess the accuracy of the Visante anterior segment optical coherence tomographer (AS-OCT) and present improved formulas for measurement of surface curvature and axial separation. Measurements are made in physical model eyes. Accuracy is compared for measurements of corneal thickness (d1) and anterior chamber depth (d2) using-built-in AS-OCT software versus the improved scheme. The improved scheme enables measurements of lens thickness (d 3) and surface curvature, in the form of conic sections specified by vertex radii and conic constants. These parameters are converted to surface coordinates for error analysis. The built-in AS-OCT software typically overestimates (mean±standard deviation(SD)]d1 by +62±4 μm and d2 by +4±88μm. The improved scheme reduces d1 (-0.4±4 μm) and d2 (0±49 μm) errors while also reducing d3 errors from +218±90 (uncorrected) to +14±123 μm (corrected). Surface x coordinate errors gradually increase toward the periphery. Considering the central 6-mm zone of each surface, the x coordinate errors for anterior and posterior corneal surfaces reached +3±10 and 0±23 μm, respectively, with the improved scheme. Those of the anterior and posterior lens surfaces reached +2±22 and +11±71 μm, respectively. Our improved scheme reduced AS-OCT errors and could, therefore, enhance pre- and postoperative assessments of keratorefractive or cataract surgery, including measurement of accommodating intraocular lenses. © 2007 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers

    Exploring oxidative modifications of tyrosine:an update on mechanisms of formation, advances in analysis and biological consequences

    Protein oxidation is increasingly recognised as an important modulator of biochemical pathways controlling both physiological and pathological processes. While much attention has focused on cysteine modifications in reversible redox signalling, there is increasing evidence that other protein residues are oxidised in vivo with impact on cellular homeostasis and redox signalling pathways. A notable example is tyrosine, which can undergo a number of oxidative post-translational modifications to form 3-hydroxy-tyrosine, tyrosine crosslinks, 3-nitrotyrosine and halogenated tyrosine, with different effects on cellular functions. Tyrosine oxidation has been studied extensively in vitro, and this has generated detailed information about the molecular mechanisms that may occur in vivo. An important aspect of studying tyrosine oxidation both in vitro and in biological systems is the ability to monitor the formation of oxidised derivatives, which depends on a variety of analytical techniques. While antibody-dependent techniques such as ELISAs are commonly used, these have limitations, and more specific assays based on spectroscopic or spectrometric techniques are required to provide information on the exact residues modified and the nature of the modification. These approaches have helped understanding of the consequences of tyrosine oxidation in biological systems, especially its effects on cell signalling and cell dysfunction, linking to roles in disease. There is mounting evidence that tyrosine oxidation processes are important in vivo and can contribute to cellular pathology

    Hereditary complement factor I deficiency

    Summary We describe four cases (from three families) of hereditary factor I deficiency, bringing the total number of cases now reported to 23. In one family there are two affected siblings: one has suffered recurrent pyogenic infections; the other is asymptomatic. In the second family, the patient had recurrent pyogenic infections and a self-limiting vasculitic illness; in the third family, the patient suffered recurrent pyogenic and neisserial infections. All four patients had markedly reduced concentrations of C3 in the serum (family 1 propositus: 28%; family 1 asymptomatic sibling: 15%; family 2: 31%; and family 3: 31 % normal human serum) which was in the form of C3b. Low lgG2 levels may occur in primary C3 deficiency, and reduction in lgG2 concentration to 1.14 g/l (normal: 1.30-5.90 g/l) was found in the patient from family 2. Using radioligand binding assays, we demonstrated increased binding of C3b to erythrocytes in a patient with factor I deficiency.     An evaluation of the capability of data conversion of impression creep test

    High temperature power plant components are now working far beyond their operative designed life. Establishing their in-service material properties has become a matter of significant concern for power generation companies. Advantages for the assessment of creep material properties may come from miniature specimen creep testing techniques, like impression creep testing method, which can be treated as a quasistatic non-destructive technique and requires a small volume of material that can be scooped from in-service critical components, and can produce reliable secondary creep data. This paper presents an overview of impression creep testing method to highlight the capability in determining the minimum creep strain rate data by use of conversion relationships that relates uniaxial creep test data and impression creep test data. Stepped-load and stepped-temperature impression creep tests are also briefly described. Furthermore, the paper presents some new impression creep test data and their correlation with uniaxial data, obtained from P91, P92 and ½CrMoV steels at different stresses and temperatures. The presented data, in terms of creep strain rate against the reference uniaxial stress, are useful for calibration of impression creep testing technique and provide further comparative results for the evaluation of the reliability of the method in determining secondary creep properties
