Detection of periodic signatures in the solar power spectrum. On the track of l=1 gravity modes
In the present work we show robust indications of the existence of g modes in
the Sun using 10 years of GOLF data. The present analysis is based on the
exploitation of the collective properties of the predicted low-frequency (25 to
140 microHz) g modes: their asymptotic nature, which implies a quasi
equidistant separation of their periods for a given angular degree (l). The
Power Spectrum (PS) of the Power Spectrum Density (PSD), reveals a significant
structure indicating the presence of features (peaks) in the PSD with near
equidistant periods corresponding to l=1 modes in the range n=-4 to n=-26. The
study of its statistical significance of this feature was fully undertaken and
complemented with Monte Carlo simulations. This structure has a confidence
level better than 99.86% not to be due to pure noise. Furthermore, a detailed
study of this structure suggests that the gravity modes have a much more
complex structure than the one initially expected (line-widths, magnetic
splittings...). Compared to the latest solar models, the obtained results tend
to favor a solar core rotating significantly faster than the rest of the
radiative zone. In the framework of the Phoebus group, we have also applied the
same methodology to other helioseismology instruments on board SoHO and ground
based networks.Comment: Proceedings of the SOHO-18/GONG2006/HELAS I: Beyond the spherical Su
Circumcision and penile human papillomavirus prevalence in human immunodeficiency virus-infected men: heterosexual and men who have sex with men
AbstractMale circumcision is associated with a lower risk of penile human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) uninfected men. Few studies have evaluated the role of male circumcision in penile HPV infection in HIV-infected men. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine the association between male circumcision and the prevalence of penile HPV infection among HIV-infected men—both men who have sex with men (MSM) and heterosexual men. Samples from 706 consecutive men included in the CARH-MEN cohort (overall 24% circumcised: 26% of MSM, 18% of heterosexual men) were examined by Multiplex-PCR. In the overall group (all HIV-infected men included), the prevalence of any penile HPV infection was 22% in circumcised men and 27% in uncircumcised men (OR = 1.0, 95% CI 0.6–1.6, adjusted analysis). In the circumcised group the overall prevalence of HPV infection was 22% in MSM and 24% in the heterosexual men, whereas in the uncircumcised group the prevalence was 26% and 28%, respectively. The prevalence of high-risk HPV types tended to be lower in the circumcised MSM (14% vs 21%, OR = 0.6, 95% CI 0.3–1.1, p 0.088), but it was similar in the heterosexual men (18% in circumcised vs 20% in uncircumcised). These results suggest that male circumcision may be associated with a lower prevalence of oncogenic high-risk penile HPV infection in HIV-infected MSM
Detecting individual gravity modes in the Sun: Chimera or reality?
Over the past 15 years, our knowledge of the interior of the Sun has
tremendously progressed by the use of helioseismic measurements. However, to go
further in our understanding of the solar core, we need to measure gravity (g)
modes. Thanks to the high quality of the Doppler-velocity signal measured by
GOLF/SoHO, it has been possible to unveil the signature of the asymptotic
properties of the solar g modes, thus obtaining a hint of the rotation rate in
the core. However, the quest for the detection of individual g modes is not yet
over. In this work, we apply the latest theoretical developments to guide our
research using GOLF velocity time series. In contrary to what was thought till
now, we are maybe starting to identify individual low-frequency g modes...Comment: Highlight of Astronomy (HoA) proceedings of the JD-11, IAU 2009. 2

The Voices and Choices of Women in the Academy
While it is clear that gender inequity still exists, this situation is compounded by race, ethnicity and sexism. The daily experiences of women confirm that racism and sexism is alive and well. This article presents and examines the experiences of Latino, Black, Arab, and Asian professional women and the consequences of their career decisions. Synthesized with literature, conceptual patterns of significance are noted for young girls and women of color aspiring and pursuing professional careers in education. The strategies utilized by these diverse professional women to cope with the trials and tribulations of contemporary educational and professional challenges are reviewed. It is necessary to continue to educate the public about the struggles and successes of women of diverse backgrounds to assist both high school and college age women as they prepare to contribute to the global economy of the 21st century.https://digitalcommons.georgiasouthern.edu/jiasgag/1004/thumbnail.jp
A cohort study of post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome and PCV2 in 178 pigs from birth to 14 weeks on a single farm in England
Our hypothesis was that pigs that develop post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) are detectable from an early age with signs of weight loss and other clinical and serological abnormalities. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the temporally varying and fixed events linked with the clinical incidence of PMWS by comparing affected and unaffected pigs in a cohort of 178 male piglets. Piglets were enrolled at birth and examined each week. Samples of blood were collected at regular intervals. The exposures measured were porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) antibody titres in all 178 and PCV2 antigen in a subset of 75 piglets. We also observed piglet health and measured their weight, and a post-mortem examination was performed by an external laboratory on all pigs between 6 and 14 weeks of age that died. From the cohort, 14 (8%) pigs died from PMWS and 4% from other causes. A further 37 pigs between 6 and 14 weeks of age died from PMWS (30) and ileitis and other causes (7). PMWS was only apparent in pigs from 1 to 2 weeks before death when they wasted rapidly. There were no other characteristic clinical signs and no obvious gross clinical lesions post-mortem. There was no strong link with PCV2 antibody throughout life but PCV2 antigen level was higher from 4 to 6 weeks of age in pigs that died from PMWS compared with pigs that died from other causes
Analysis of ORF5 and Full-Length Genome Sequences of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus Isolates of Genotypes 1 and 2 Retrieved Worldwide Provides Evidence that Recombination Is a Common Phenomenon and May Produce Mosaic Isolates
Recombination is currently recognized as a factor for high genetic diversity, but the frequency of such recombination events and the genome segments involved are not well known. In the present study, we initially focused on the detection of recombinant porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) isolates by examining previously published data sets of ORF5 sequences (genotypes 1 and 2) obtained worldwide. We then examined full-length genome sequences in order to determine potential recombination breakpoints along the viral genome. For ORF5, 11 sets of genotype 1 sequences from different geographical areas, including 2 Asian, 1 American, and 7 European regions, and three sets of genotype 2, including sets from China, Mexico, and the United States, were analyzed separately. Potential recombination breakpoints were detected in 10/11 genotype 1 sets, including 9 cases in which the clustering of at least one isolate was different before and after the breakpoints. In genotype 2, potential breakpoints and different tree clustering of at least one strain before and after the breakpoint were observed in 2 out of 3 sets. The results indicated that most of the ORF5 data sets contained at least one recombinant sequence. When the full-length genome sequences were examined, both genotype 1 and 2 sets presented breakpoints (10 and 9, respectively), resulting in significantly different topologies before and after the breakpoints. Mosaic genomes were detected in genotype 1 sequences. These results may have significant implications for the understanding of the molecular epidemiology of PRRSV. IMPORTANCE PRRSV is one of the most important viruses affecting swine production worldwide, causing big economic losses and sanitary problems. One of the key questions on PRRSV arises from its genetic diversity, which is thought to have a direct impact on immunobiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, and vaccine efficacy. One of the causes of this genetic diversity is recombination among strains. This study provides evidence that recombinant PRRSV isolates are common in most of the countries with significant swine production, especially PRRSV genotype 1. This observation has implications in the proper characterization of PRRSV strains, in the future development of phylogenetic studies, and in the development of new PRRSV control strategies. Moreover, the present paper emphasizes the need for a deeper understanding of the mechanisms and circumstances involved in the generation of genetic diversity of PRRSV
