Spectro-Polarimetric Observation of an Emerging Flux Region: Triggering Mechanism of Ellerman Bombs
High spatial resolution observation of an emerging flux region (EFR) was done
using a vector magnetograph and a H-alpha Lyot filtergraph with Domeless Solar
Telescope at Hida Observatory on October 22, 2006. In H-alpha wing images, we
could see many Ellerman bombs (EBs) in the EFR. Two observation modes, slit
scan and slit fixed, were performed with the vector magnetograph, along with
H-alpha filtergraph. Using H-alpha wing images, we detected 12 EBs during slit
scan observation period and 9 EBs during slit fixed observation period. With
slit scan observation, we found that all the EBs were distributed in the area
where the spatial gradient of vertical field intensity was large, which
indicates the possibility of rapid topological change in magnetic field in the
area of EBs. With slit fixed observation, we found that EBs were distributed in
the areas of undulatory magnetic fields, both in vertical and horizontal
components. This paper is the first to report the undulatory pattern in
horizontal components of magnetic field, which is also evidence for emerging
magnetic flux by Parker instability. These results allow us to confirm the
association between EBs and emerging flux tubes. Three triggering mechanism of
EBs is discussed with respect to emerging flux tubes: 9 out of 21 EBs occurred
at the footpoints of emerging flux tubes, 8 out of 21 EBs occurred at the top
of emerging flux tubes, and 4 out of 21 EBs occurred at unipolar region. Each
case can be explained by magnetic reconnection in the low chromosphere.Comment: 30 pages, 17 figure
IR Detection of Low-Mass Secondaries in Spectroscopic Binaries
This paper outlines an infrared spectroscopic technique to measure the radial
velocities of faint secondaries in known single-lined binaries. The paper
presents our H-band observations with the CSHELL and Phoenix spectrographs and
describes detections of three low-mass secondaries in main-sequence binaries:
G147-36, G164-67, and HD144284 with mass ratios of 0.562+-0.011, 0.423+-0.042,
and 0.380+-0.013, respectively. The latter is one of the smallest mass ratios
derived to date
The Curse of Small Domains: New Attacks on Format-Preserving Encryption
Format-preserving encryption (FPE) produces ciphertexts which have the same format as the plaintexts. Building secure FPE is very challenging, and recent attacks (Bellare, Hoang, Tessaro, CCS\u2716; Durak and Vaudenay, CRYPTO\u2717) have highlighted security deficiencies in the recent NIST SP800-38G standard. This has left the question open of whether practical schemes with high security exist.
In this paper, we continue the investigation of attacks against FPE schemes. Our first contribution are new known-plaintext message recovery attacks against Feistel-based FPEs (such as FF1/FF3 from the NIST SP800-38G standard) which improve upon previous work in terms of amortized complexity in multi-target scenarios, where multiple ciphertexts are to be decrypted. Our attacks are also qualitatively better in that they make no assumptions on the correlation between the targets to be decrypted and the known plaintexts. We also surface a new vulnerability specific to FF3 and how it handles odd length domains, which leads to a substantial speedup in our attacks.
We also show the first attacks against non-Feistel based FPEs. Specifically, we show a strong message-recovery attack for FNR, a construction proposed by Cisco which replaces two rounds in the Feistel construction with a pairwise-independent permutation, following the paradigm by Naor and Reingold (JoC,\u2799). We also provide a strong ciphertext-only attack against a variant of the DTP construction by Brightwell and Smith, which is deployed by Protegrity within commercial applications.
All of our attacks show that existing constructions fall short of achieving desirable security levels. For Feistel and the FNR schemes, our attacks become feasible on small domains, e.g., 8 bits, for suggested round numbers. Our attack against the DTP construction is practical even for large domains. We provide proof-of-concept implementations of our attacks that verify our theoretical findings
Linking compact dwarf starburst galaxies in the resolve survey to downsized blue nuggets
Abstract We identify and characterize compact dwarf starburst (CDS) galaxies in the RESOLVE survey, a volume-limited census of galaxies in the local universe, to probe whether this population contains any residual âblue nuggets,â a class of intensely star-forming compact galaxies first identified at high redshift z. Our 50 low-z CDS galaxies are defined by dwarf masses (stellar mass M* < 109.5 Mâ), compact bulged-disk or spheroid-dominated morphologies (using a quantitative criterion, \mu _\Delta > 8.6), and specific star formation rates above the defining threshold for high-z blue nuggets (log SSFR [Gyrâ1] > â0.5). Across redshifts, blue nuggets exhibit three defining properties: compactness relative to contemporaneous galaxies, abundant cold gas, and formation via compaction in mergers or colliding streams. Those with halo mass below Mhalo ⌠1011.5 Mâ may in theory evade permanent quenching and cyclically refuel until the present day. Selected only for compactness and starburst activity, our CDS galaxies generally have Mhalo âČ 1011.5 Mâ and gas-to-stellar mass ratio âł1. Moreover, analysis of archival DECaLS photometry and new 3D spectroscopic observations for CDS galaxies reveals a high rate of photometric and kinematic disturbances suggestive of dwarf mergers. The SSFRs, surface mass densities, and number counts of CDS galaxies are compatible with theoretical and observational expectations for redshift evolution in blue nuggets. We argue that CDS galaxies represent a maximally-starbursting subset of traditional compact dwarf classes such as blue compact dwarfs and blue E/S0s. We conclude that CDS galaxies represent a low-z tail of the blue nugget phenomenon formed via a moderated compaction channel that leaves open the possibility of disk regrowth and evolution into normal disk galaxies
Inter-hemispheric EEG coherence analysis in Parkinson's disease : Assessing brain activity during emotion processing
Parkinsonâs disease (PD) is not only characterized by its prominent motor symptoms but also associated with disturbances in cognitive and emotional functioning. The objective of the present study was to investigate the influence of emotion processing on inter-hemispheric electroencephalography (EEG) coherence in PD. Multimodal emotional stimuli (happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, and disgust) were presented to 20 PD patients and 30 age-, education level-, and gender-matched healthy controls (HC) while EEG was recorded. Inter-hemispheric coherence was computed from seven homologous EEG electrode pairs (AF3âAF4, F7âF8, F3âF4, FC5âFC6, T7âT8, P7âP8, and O1âO2) for delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma frequency bands. In addition, subjective ratings were obtained for a representative of emotional stimuli. Interhemispherically, PD patients showed significantly lower coherence in theta, alpha, beta, and gamma frequency bands than HC during emotion processing. No significant changes were found in the delta frequency band coherence. We also found that PD patients were more impaired in recognizing negative emotions (sadness, fear, anger, and disgust) than relatively positive emotions (happiness and surprise). Behaviorally, PD patients did not show impairment in emotion recognition as measured by subjective ratings. These findings suggest that PD patients may have an impairment of inter-hemispheric functional connectivity (i.e., a decline in cortical connectivity) during emotion processing. This study may increase the awareness of EEG emotional response studies in clinical practice to uncover potential neurophysiologic abnormalities

Factors associated with sexual quality of life among men living with HIV
Introduction
This study aims to assess the prevalence of sexual difficulties and identify factors associated with the Sexual Quality of Life (SQoL) among people living with HIV (PLWHA).
Methods
The study included 107 heterosexual men and 474 men who have sex with men (MSM) from five countries. Participants self-reported variables related to physical and mental health, as well as HIV-related parameters. Erectile or ejaculation difficulty, as well as low sexual desire, were investigated. SQoL was measured using the PROQOL-SexLife questionnaire.
Results
Most of participants reported low sexual desire, predominantly among MSM. Among MSM, living with a partner and healthcare satisfaction were associated with SQoL scores in POP dimension, while consistent condom use, cardiovascular complications, and being single were associated with SQoL scores in STI dimension. Viagra use, anti-cholesterol treatment, and living with a partner were associated with SQoL scores in DIS dimension. Among heterosexual men, employment and African origin were associated with SQoL scores in the POP dimension. Alcohol consumption was associated with SQoL scores in STI dimension.
Conclusion
This study underscores the importance of non-clinical determinants when assessing SQoL among PLWHA, emphasizing psychological factors and the perceived quality of healthcare. Tailored interventions should incorporate these findings to enhance overall SQoL outcomes
