THROES: a caTalogue of HeRschel Observations of Evolved Stars. I. PACS range spectroscopy

This is the first of a series of papers presenting the THROES (A caTalogue of HeRschel Observations of Evolved Stars) project, intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the spectroscopic results obtained in the far-infrared (55-670 microns) with the Her- schel space observatory on low-to-intermediate mass evolved stars in our Galaxy. Here we introduce the catalogue of interactively reprocessed PACS (Photoconductor Array Camera and Spectrometer) spectra covering the 55-200 microns range for 114 stars in this category for which PACS range spectroscopic data is available in the Herschel Science Archive (HSA). Our sample includes objects spanning a range of evolutionary stages, from the asymptotic giant branch to the planetary nebula phase, displaying a wide variety of chemical and physical properties. The THROES/PACS catalogue is accessible via a dedicated web-based inter- face (https://throes.cab.inta-csic.es/) and includes not only the science-ready Herschel spectroscopic data for each source, but also complementary photometric and spectroscopic data from other infrared observatories, namely IRAS (Infrared Astronomical Satellite), ISO (Infrared Space Observatory) or AKARI, at overlapping wavelengths. Our goal is to create a legacy-value Herschel dataset that can be used by the scientific community in the future to deepen our knowledge and understanding of these latest stages of the evolution of low-to-intermediate mass stars.Comment: 38 page

Although grouting is a widespread process mainly used for soil treatment and for filling cracks/voids in concrete structures, grout injection is still a challenging step. Due to the different performance required for the numerous fields of application, encompassing several injection methods and different design approaches, it is essential to understand how the components of the grout (cement, aggregates, supplementary cementitious materials, chemical admixtures) affect the workability, stability, injectability, consistency, rheology and, as a result both the composition and the aforesaid properties, also the mechanical strength of the material and the effectiveness and long term performance of the overall grouting application. As a matter of fact, all cementitious materials can suffer deterioration processes that affect the serviceability and durability of structures and jeopardizing their safety, requiring maintenance/recovery works whose cost can, overall the structure life cycle, result even higher than the construction one. This may be especially true in the case of grouting applications, e.g. in prestressed concrete structures, where the state of deterioration is not visible and its non-inspectable progress might lead to catastrophic structural failures. To address all these issues, researchers have developed self-healing cementitious materials which have proved to be an interesting option, as they are able to prolong the lifetime of structures, reducing the environmental impact all along its life cycle. The literature points out that many self-healing mechanisms are effective in concrete and mortars. However, this technology has been barely applied in grouts. In this context, this work presents a comprehensive overview of cementitious grouts with focus on their composition, properties, application technologies and conditions that can affect the overall material and application performance. In addition, this review also provides an overview of self-healing technologies applied to grouts as well as the research gaps in the field of self-healing grouts that should be desirably filled to exploit their benefits in structural and infrastructural applications

The study of the complex vocational indecision allows the human being his own domain about his distrusts and doubts with the intention of improving his mental health and, in the case of this study, the professional mental health and its vocational development. The purpose of our research consists on explaining, by means of a group of independent variables taken from a questionnaire about the complex vocational indecision, the possibilities of success among students, becoming this survey a farsighted factor of itself. Therefore, we choose a sample of students from a higher education school in Portugal, applying as an instrument the above mentioned questionnaire and the SPSS. We conclude that most of the students consider themselves having vocation and being autonomous, proving, as a result, that this instrument is a success forecast.peerReviewe

The Comparison Study of Short-Term Prediction Methods to Enhance the Model Predictive Controller Applied to Microgrid Energy Management

    Get PDF
Electricity load forecasting, optimal power system operation and energy management play key roles that can bring significant operational advantages to microgrids. This paper studies how methods based on time series and neural networks can be used to predict energy demand and production, allowing them to be combined with model predictive control. Comparisons of different prediction methods and different optimum energy distribution scenarios are provided, permitting us to determine when short-term energy prediction models should be used. The proposed prediction models in addition to the model predictive control strategy appear as a promising solution to energy management in microgrids. The controller has the task of performing the management of electricity purchase and sale to the power grid, maximizing the use of renewable energy sources and managing the use of the energy storage system. Simulations were performed with different weather conditions of solar irradiation. The obtained results are encouraging for future practical implementation

Changes may have been made to this work since it was submitted for publication. Copyright @ 2008 Elsevier B.V.A three-stage metal hydride based hydrogen compressor prototype was built. It has been designed for a hydrogen production facility using a low-pressure alkaline electrolyser. The compression system should transfer heat recovered from the electrolyser into the hydride beds to allow hydrogen desorption flow. The three-stage compressor achieves a compression ratio of 20:1 atm. It performs a thermal cycling of three AB5 hydrides between 20 and 80 °C. Its flow rate, for 25 g of each hydride bed, reaches about 20 l (NTP) of hydrogen per hour. The prototype is now operational. Some improvements in the heat transfer management system are also carried out before proceeding to the interconnection with the electrolyser and to the extent that the hydrogen produced satisfies the high purity requirement of the hydrides used in the compressor.Natural Resources Canada(NRCan), Ministère des Ressources Naturelles et de la Faune du Québec (MRNF), and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada

Dripping Faucet Dynamics Clarified by an Improved Mass-Spring Model

An improved mass-spring model for a dripping faucet is presented. The model is constructed based on the numerical results which we recently obtained from fluid dynamical calculations. Both the fluid dynamical calculations and the present mass-spring model exhibit a variety of complex behavior including transition to chaos in good agreement with experiments. Further, the mass-spring model reveals fundamental dynamics inherent in the dripping faucet system.Comment: 17 pages, 17 figure

Postprint (published version

Sustainable development goals and climate change in Spanish technology disciplines’ curricula: From LOMCE to LOMLOE

    Get PDF
Understanding the prevalence of climate change and sustainable development in the new curriculum of compulsory secondary education (ESO) and the baccalaureate is crucial for educational communities in Spain. However, there was a lack of studies that examined the integration of climate change and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as cross-cutting themes in the new education framework, particularly in the technology disciplines. This study aimed to address this gap by conducting a comparative analysis of the new legislative content (LOMLOE) and the previous legislation (LOMCE). The analysis quantified the presence of keywords related to climate change and sustainable development in both legal texts, focusing on the definition of objectives, level skills, evaluation criteria, and blocks of knowledge. Additionally, the study assessed the inclusion of SDGs and the ethical implications associated with the use and production of technologies at both education levels. The analysis of the curriculum content revealed a significant presence of references to climate change, sustainable development, and SDGs throughout the LOMLOE curriculum, particularly in the baccalaureate. Notably, education’s role in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development was explicitly recognized as an objective at this level. Regarding technology disciplines, LOMLOE placed considerable emphasis on fostering awareness of the environmental impact of technological development by introducing a new cross-level knowledge block named “Sustainable Technology”, spanning from ESO to the final courses of baccalaureate. This integration was further reinforced by evaluation criteria and specific skills that strongly aligned with sustainability principles, encouraging assessments centred around environmental awareness, ethical responsibilities, and sustainable entrepreneurship. Further studies are required to evaluate the effectiveness of incorporating SDGs and climate change into technology disciplines following the implementation of LOMLOE, with the aim of identifying best practices for effectively combatting climate change and promoting sustainability in technology education.Xunta de Galicia/FEDER | Ref. Two Hundred Faces of a Vampire: Lord Ruthven’s Influence on Vampire Culture

    Get PDF
Being born in the same monstruous night that witnessed the rise of Frankenstein monster, the vampire Lord Ruthven celebrates in 2019 two hundred years influencing vampire culture. As it happens in literature, John William Polidori’s creature spread his curse through the centuries creating attractive, aristocrat, sexually ambiguous and immoral male and female vampires. From Victorian penny dreadfuls, novellas and novels such as Varney, the Vampire, Carmilla and Dracula, to present novel as Interview with the Vampire, the short story “The Vampyre” established the character who walk among human beings as a predator who chooses his prey. Ruthven was directly shaped on Lord Byron personality and, similar to the famous English poet, was an elegant figure of high culture and refined manners who hid a wild, libertine, profoundly narcissist nature and irascible behaviour, traits that paradoxically became Byron and his literary counterpart, delightfully fascinating beings. Reflecting the Romantic esthetic of its time, Polidori’s short story instituted the vampire as a rebel beyond bourgeois social norms. Lord Ruthven was an undead and, threfore, was not bound to the concepts that rule the living ones. In this way, the vampire appeal to humanity hidden desires related to the anguish of death, to the perspective of the transcendence and to the fear of the consequences of this act abandoning human nature. These elements help understanding the cultural impact John William Polidori’s creation keep on exercising two hundred years after 1819 through “The Vampyre”.2019-2
