Combinatorial formulation of Ising model revisited

In 1952, Kac and Ward developed a combinatorial formulation for the two dimensional Ising model which is another method of obtaining Onsager's formula for the free energy per site in the thermodynamic limit of the model. Feynman gave an important contribution to this formulation conjecturing a crucial mathematical relation which completed Kac and Ward ideas. In this paper, the method of Kac, Ward and Feynman for the free field Ising model in two dimensions is reviewed in a selfcontained way.Comment: 27 pages, 17 figure

    Performance Analysis of Network-Assisted Two-Hop D2D Communications

Network-assisted single-hop device-to-device (D2D) communication can increase the spectral and energy efficiency of cellular networks by taking advantage of the proximity, reuse, and hop gains when radio resources are properly managed between the cellular and D2D layers. In this paper we argue that D2D technology can be used to further increase the spectral and energy efficiency if the key D2D radio resource management algorithms are suitably extended to support network assisted multi-hop D2D communications. Specifically, we propose a novel, distributed utility maximizing D2D power control (PC) scheme that is able to balance spectral and energy efficiency while taking into account mode selection and resource allocation constraints that are important in the integrated cellular-D2D environment. Our analysis and numerical results indicate that multi-hop D2D communications combined with the proposed PC scheme can be useful not only for harvesting the potential gains previously identified in the literature, but also for extending the coverage of cellular networks.Comment: 6 pages and 7 figure

CONCLUSÃO: Entre pacientes com IRAH, a CNAF associou-se a mortalidade na UCI e necessidade de VMI significativamente menores.PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) on patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF) when compared to noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIV). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective single-center study of patients with AHRF admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) who performed HFNC or NIV. The primary outcomes included mortality during ICU stay and 90-day mortality. The need for invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) and ICU length of stay were defined as secondary outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 101 patients were included in the study (NIV 82; HFNC 19). Mortality during ICU stay (NIV 19.5% versus HFNC 0%; p=0.037) and need for IMV (NIV 45.1% versus HFNC 15.8%; p=0.018) were significantly lower in the HFNC group. No differences were observed in 90-day mortality or ICU length of stay. In the subgroup analysis, HFNC was associated with a decreased risk of longer ICU stay in the following subgroups: 100<PaO2/FiO2 ratio≤200; 200<PaO2/FiO2 ratio≤300; Pneumonia, Acute respiratory distress syndrome or Other as cause of AHRF. However, in patients with Decompensated heart failure, HFNC was associated with an increased risk of longer ICU stay. CONCLUSION: Among AHRF patients, HFNC was associated with significantly lower mortality during ICU stay and need for IMV

Ancestral transplantation as a matter of gender: Narrating us, Wigudun

In this short essay, we want to revive some reflections reported to us by Yineth Muñoz, a person of Guna origin, an Indigenous people from Panama, to think with her what gives form to gender. We intend to critically imagine (Hartman, 2019) what happens to this concept – a technology, a somato-political fiction, and a material cutout – once the elaborations, concerns, and agency recalled and presented by Yineth's narratives traverse it. In this sense, the effort is not to explain Guna's gender, meaning to understand it as an object of ethnological elaboration. We would like to consider what comprises gender when it comes to metaphorizing – as an equivocal concept – the problems and reflections posed by Yineth. We will begin by going back to Yineth's considerations, which implicate gender in a series of other procedures and recursiveness that, we think, assist in raising questions to complicate some of the metaphors underlying mainstream descriptions concerned with matters of gender. Therefore, ours is an exercise concerned with a transfeminist engagement with the problem: to implicate oneself in it, not to explain it

This study aims to examine the positioning of the activities of Production Planning and Control (PPC) under the paradigm of systems thinking. The research is carried out in a metalworking midsize company, where it was sought to apply the systems thinking to assist in understanding the interactions and activities developed in the PPC system of the company object of study. For this reason, the aspects of influence on the local PPC decisions were detailed in a systemic way, analyzed the strategic positioning and responsibilities of the system of PPC researched and reviewed its structure of decisions and activities performed. From a future designed state, contemplating a framework of suggested actions, the results with this approach point to a better understanding of the company regarding its processes involved in the PPC activities, fundamental to organizational learning and improvement in decision-making

A comparative analysis of adaptive middleware architectures based on computational reflection and aspect oriented programming to support mobile computing applications

    Get PDF
Mobile computing applications are required to operate in environments in which the availability for resources and services may change significantly during system operation. As a result, mobile computing applications need to be capable of adapting to these changes to offer the best possible level of service to their users. However, traditional middleware is limited in its capability of adapting to environment changes and different users requirements. Computational Reflection and Aspect Oriented Programming paradigms have been used in the design and implementation of adaptive middleware architectures. In this paper, we propose two adaptive middleware architectures, one based on reflection and other based on aspects, which can be used to develop adaptive mobile applications. The reflection based architecture is compared to an aspect oriented based architecture from a quantitative perspective. The results suggest that middleware based on Aspect Oriented Programming can be used to build mobile adaptive applications that require less processor running time and more memory space than Computational Reflection while producing code that is easier to comprehend and modify.8th IFIP/IEEE International conference on Mobile and Wireless CommunicationRed de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI

Dynamical matrix for arbitrary quadratic fermionic bath Hamiltonians and non-Markovian dynamics of one and two qubits in an Ising model environment

We obtain the analytical expression for the Kraus decomposition of the quantum map of an environment modeled by an arbitrary quadratic fermionic Hamiltonian acting on one or two qubits, and derive simple functions to check the non-positivity of the intermediate map. These functions correspond to two different sufficient criteria for non-Markovianity. In the particular case of an environment represented by the Ising Hamiltonian, we discuss the two sources of non-Markovianity in the model, one due to the finite size of the lattice, and another due to the kind of interactions.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure

Based on a political process approach, the article analyses an episode of legal mobilization which took place between 2003 and 2006 during the campaign in favour of the Maria da Penha Law in Brazil. Promoted by feminist organizations, the national movement resulted in new legal tools against domestic violence and violence against women: The Maria da Penha Law. It is argued that the emergence and success of the legal campaign depended on a set of factors, including the national and international political opportunity structure of the 1990's, the style of the activist's careers, the reframing of violence against women, and new strategies for legal and political mobilization.

The sociocultural sector has been in recent times an integral part of Portuguese prison management. Inmates are encouraged to proactively engage in these activities, to put their social and artistic skills to use, and to find in them some relief in the prison’s disciplinary pressure. As they participate in these “suspended spaces” wherein ludic and artistic activities are organized, certain inmates become “prata da casa” (homegrown pride), acting as the prison’s public image and benefiting from a close relationship with the prison staff. Drawing from this ambiguous status, we propose an analysis of a penal modality whereby inmates partly take charge of managing their own sentence.
