Simple Pulses for Universal Quantum Computation with a Heisenberg ABAB Chain
Recently Levy has shown that quantum computation can be performed using an
ABAB.. chain of spin-1/2 systems with nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interactions.
Levy notes that all necessary elementary computational `gates' can be achieved
by using spin-resonance techniques involving modulating the spin-spin
interaction strength at high frequency. Here we note that, as an alternative to
that approach, it is possible to perform the elementary gates with simple,

Genotypic characterisation of Giardia from domestic dogs in the USA
The first large-scale urban survey of Giardia infections in dogs was undertaken in the USA. It involved several locations in the Western United States with Giardia isolates from microscopy-positive samples characterised by multi-locus PCR and sequencing. A high prevalence of Giardia was confirmed in asymptomatic domestic dogs, and for the first time, provides evidence that zoonotic assemblages/subgroups of Giardia occur frequently in domestic dogs living in urban environments, and more frequently than the dog specific assemblages
The effects of man-marking on work intensity in small-sided soccer games
The aim of this study was to examine the effect of manipulating defensive rules: with and without man-marking (MM and NMM) on exercise intensity in 3 vs. 3 small-sided games (SSGs). Twelve adolescent soccer players (age: 16.2 ± 0.7 years; body mass: 55.7 ± 6.4 kg; body height: 1.70 ± 0.07 m) participated in this repeated measures study. Each participant performed in four different SSGs formats: 3 vs. 3 MM with and without goals and 3 vs. 3 NMM with and without goals. Each SSG lasted 3 x 4 minutes interspersed with 4 minutes passive recovery. The percentage heart rate reserve (%HRreserve) was recorded continuously during SSG and session-rating of perceived exertion (session-RPE) after the SSG. MANOVA showed that defensive rule had significant effects on intensity (F = 5.37, p < 0.01). Specifically, MM during SSG induced significantly higher %HRreserve compared to NMM (Goal: 80.5 vs. 75.7%; No goal: 80.5 vs. 76.1%; p < 0.05, effect size = 0.91-1.06), irrespective of the presence or absence of goals. However, only MM with the presence of goals induced significant higher session-RPE compared to NMM (7.1 vs. 6.0; p < 0.05, effect size = 1.36), whereas no difference in session-RPE was observed
between MM and NMM (7.4 vs. 6.9; p > 0.05, effect size
= 0.63) when no goals were used. Higher intra-class reliability and lower coefficient of variation values were also reported in MM as compared to NMM. This study in youth soccer players shows there is ~4.5% increase in heart rate response by using the man-marking in 3 vs. 3 SSG thus the intensity of SSG can be significantly increased when using man-marking tactics
Match running performance during fixture congestion in elite soccer: Research issues and future directions
Match congestion in elite soccer has been proposed to result in residual fatigue and underperformance in ensuing competition due to insufficient recovery time. In this article, matters relating to match congestion and running performance in elite soccer competition are discussed. The authors suggest a need to determine the extent to which elite players are in reality exposed to periods of match congestion hence to potential declines in performance. Despite evidence of exercise-induced muscle damage combined with a decline in physical performance up to 72-hours post-match, research using time-motion analyses suggest running performance represented by distances covered is unaffected over periods of match congestion. The authors recommend analysis of alternative movement variables including accelerations, decelerations and turns that are taxing metabolically and contribute greatly to muscle damage. Moreover, a holistic approach combining subjective ratings with biochemical, hormonal and immunological responses to exercise would be pertinent especially in players frequently exposed to match congestion. Contemporary practitioners typically implement various post-match recovery treatments during dense schedules in an attempt to accelerate recovery and ensure that subsequent running performance is not unduly affected. However, empirical evidence to support their efficacy in maintaining running performance is lacking and the authors recommend controlled intervention studies using match simulations in an attempt to verify their effectiveness. These points are critically addressed using findings from the current scientific literature while gaps in the current body of knowledge and future directions for research are highlighted
Ordering in the dilute weakly-anisotropic antiferromagnet Mn(0.35)Zn(0.65)F2
The highly diluted antiferromagnet Mn(0.35)Zn(0.65)F2 has been investigated
by neutron scattering in zero field. The Bragg peaks observed below the Neel
temperature TN (approximately 10.9 K) indicate stable antiferromagnetic
long-range ordering at low temperature. The critical behavior is governed by
random-exchange Ising model critical exponents (nu approximately 0.69 and gamma
approximately 1.31), as reported for Mn(x)Zn(1-x)F2 with higher x and for the
isostructural compound Fe(x)Zn(1-x)F2. However, in addition to the Bragg peaks,
unusual scattering behavior appears for |q|>0 below a glassy temperature Tg
approximately 7.0 K. The glassy region T<Tg corresponds to that of noticeable
frequency dependence in earlier zero-field ac susceptibility measurements on
this sample. These results indicate that long-range order coexists with
short-range nonequilibrium clusters in this highly diluted magnet.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Exact Synchronization for Finite-State Sources
We analyze how an observer synchronizes to the internal state of a
finite-state information source, using the epsilon-machine causal
representation. Here, we treat the case of exact synchronization, when it is
possible for the observer to synchronize completely after a finite number of
observations. The more difficult case of strictly asymptotic synchronization is
treated in a sequel. In both cases, we find that an observer, on average, will
synchronize to the source state exponentially fast and that, as a result, the
average accuracy in an observer's predictions of the source output approaches
its optimal level exponentially fast as well. Additionally, we show here how to
analytically calculate the synchronization rate for exact epsilon-machines and
provide an efficient polynomial-time algorithm to test epsilon-machines for

Superconducting magnesium diboride films with Tc \approx 24K grown by pulsed laser deposition with in-situ anneal
Thin superconducting films of magnesium diboride (MgB2) with Tc \approx 24K
were prepared on various oxide substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD)
followed by an in-situ anneal. A systematic study of the influence of various
in-situ annealing parameters shows an optimum temperature of about 600C in a
background of 0.7 atm. of Ar/4%H2 for layers consisting of a mixture of
magnesium and boron. Contrary to ex-situ approaches (e.g. reacting boron films
with magnesium vapor at 900C), these films are processed below the
decomposition temperature of MgB2. This may prove enabling in the formation of
multilayers, junctions, and epitaxial films in future work. Issues related to
the improvement of these films and to the possible in-situ growth of MgB2 at
