The Chiral Model of Sakai-Sugimoto at Finite Baryon Density
In the context of holographic QCD we analyze Sakai-Sugimoto's chiral model at
finite baryon density and zero temperature. The baryon number density is
introduced through compact D4 wrapping S^4 at the tip of D8-\bar{D8}. Each
baryon acts as a chiral point-like source distributed uniformly over R^3, and
leads a non-vanishing U(1)_V potential on the brane. For fixed baryon charge
density n_B we analyze the bulk energy density and pressure using the canonical
formalism. The baryonic matter with point like sources is always in the
spontaneously broken phase of chiral symmetry, whatever the density. The
point-like nature of the sources and large N_c cause the matter to be repulsive
as all baryon interactions are omega mediated. Through the induced DBI action
on D8-\bar{D8}, we study the effects of the fixed baryon charge density n_B on
the pion and vector meson masses and couplings. Issues related to vector
dominance in matter in the context of holographic QCD are also discussed.Comment: V3: 39 pages, 16 figures, minor corrections, version to appear in

Valence electronic structure of Mn in undoped and doped lanthanum manganites from relative K x-ray intensity studies
Relative x-ray intensities of in , , and
( = , , and ) systems have been
measured following excitation by 59.54 keV -rays from a 200 mCi
Am point-source. The measured results for the compounds deviate
significantly from the results of pure . Comparison of the experimental
data with the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) effective atomic model
calculations indicates reasonable agreement with the predictions of ionic model
for the doped {manganites except} that the electron doped
and hole doped compounds
show some small deviations. The results of and deviate
considerably from the predictions of the ionic model. Our measured
ratio of in cannot be explained
as a linear superposition of ratios of for the end
members which is in contrast to the recent proposal by Tyson et al. from their
spectra.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. to appear in NIM-B.Please send an e-mail for

Mesoscale magnetism at the grain boundaries in colossal magnetoresistive films
We report the discovery of mesoscale regions with distinctive magnetic
properties in epitaxial LaSrMnO films which exhibit
tunneling-like magnetoresistance across grain boundaries. By using
temperature-dependent magnetic force microscopy we observe that the mesoscale
regions are formed near the grain boundaries and have a different Curie
temperature (up to 20 K {\it higher}) than the grain interiors. Our images
provide direct evidence for previous speculations that the grain boundaries in
thin films are not magnetically and electronically sharp interfaces. The size
of the mesoscale regions varies with temperature and nature of the underlying
defect.Comment: 4 pages of text, 4 figure
Near-field optical power transmission of dipole nano-antennas
Nano-antennas in functional plasmonic applications require high near-field optical power transmission. In this study, a model is developed to compute the near-field optical power transmission in the vicinity of a nano-antenna.
To increase the near-field optical power transmission from a nano-antenna, a tightly focused beam of light is utilized to illuminate a metallic nano-antenna. The modeling and simulation of these structures is performed using 3-D finite element method based full-wave solutions of Maxwell’s equations. Using the optical power transmission model, the interaction of a focused beam of light with plasmonic nanoantennas is investigated. In addition, the tightly focused beam of light is passed through a band-pass filter to identify the effect of various regions of the angular spectrum to the near-field radiation of a dipole nano-antenna. An extensive parametric study is performed to quantify the effects of various parameters on the transmission efficiency of dipole nano-antennas, including length, thickness, width, and the composition of the antenna, as well as the wavelength and half-beam angle of incident light. An optimal dipole nanoantenna geometry is identified based on the parameter studies in this work. In addition, the results of this study show the interaction of the optimized dipole nano-antenna with a magnetic recording medium when it is illuminated with a focused beam of light
Long-term trends in tropical cyclone tracks around Korea and Japan in late summer and early fall
This study investigates long-term trends in tropical cyclones (TCs) over the extratropical western North Pacific (WNP) over a period of 35 years (1982-2016). The area analyzed extended across 30-45 degrees N and 120-150 degrees E, including the regions of Korea and Japan that were seriously affected by TCs. The northward migration of TCs over the WNP to the mid-latitudes showed a sharp increase in early fall. In addition, the duration of TCs over the WNP that migrated northwards showed an increase, specifically in early to mid-September. Therefore, more recently, TC tracks have been observed to significantly extend into the mid-latitudes. The recent northward extension of TC tracks over the WNP in early fall was observed to be associated with changes in environmental conditions that were favorable for TC activities, including an increase in sea surface temperature (SST), decrease in vertical wind shear, expansion of subtropical highs, strong easterly steering winds, and an increase in relative vorticity. In contrast, northward migrations of TCs to Korea and Japan showed a decline in late August, because of the presence of unfavorable environmental conditions for TC activities. These changes in environmental conditions, such as SST and vertical wind shear, can be partially associated with the Pacific decadal oscillation
Suppression of Superconducting Critical Current Density by Small Flux Jumps in Thin Films
By doing magnetization measurements during magnetic field sweeps on thin
films of the new superconductor , it is found that in a low temperature
and low field region small flux jumps are taking place. This effect strongly
suppresses the central magnetization peak leading to reduced nominal
superconducting critical current density at low temperatures. A borderline for
this effect to occur is determined on the field-temperature (H-T) phase
diagram. It is suggested that the small size of the flux jumps in films is due
to the higher density of small defects and the relatively easy thermal
diffusion in thin films in comparison with bulk samples.Comment: 7 figures Phys. Rev. B accepted scheduled issue: 01 Feb 200
QCD Sum Rules and Applications to Nuclear Physics
Applications of QCD sum-rule methods to the physics of nuclei are reviewed,
with an emphasis on calculations of baryon self-energies in infinite nuclear
matter. The sum-rule approach relates spectral properties of hadrons
propagating in the finite-density medium, such as optical potentials for
quasinucleons, to matrix elements of QCD composite operators (condensates). The
vacuum formalism for QCD sum rules is generalized to finite density, and the
strategy and implementation of the approach is discussed. Predictions for
baryon self-energies are compared to those suggested by relativistic nuclear
physics phenomenology. Sum rules for vector mesons in dense nuclear matter are
also considered.Comment: 92 pages, ReVTeX, 9 figures can be obtained upon request (to Xuemin

Bulk Filling Branes and the Baryon Density in AdS/QCD with gravity back-reaction
We consider the gravity back reaction on the metric due to the baryon density
in effective ads/qcd model by reconsidering the role of the charged AdS black
hole. Previously it has been known that the U(1) charge is dual to the
R-charge. Here we point out that if we consider the case where is
completely filled with flavor branes, the gravity back reaction produces
charged AdS black hole where the effect of charge on the metric is proportional
to . As a consequence, phase diagram changes qualitatively if we allow
finite: it closes at the finite density unlike the probe brane
embedding approach.
Another issue we discuss here is the question whether there is any chemical
potential dependence in the confining phase. We consider this problem in the
hard wall model with baryon charge. We conclude that there is a non-trivial
dependence on the chemical potential in this case also.Comment: 17 pages 3x2 figures, v2: references added;v3 published version,
