    Clean-Fuel e-VTOL Air Mobility Vehicles for Unmanned and Manned Operations

    Imagine for a moment, having your very own safe, affordable, clean-fuel, point-to-any point vehicle for travel in the 21st-century 3-dimensional airspace system. Your ultra-reliable e-VTOL allows commuters to leave behind the constraints of hub-and-spoke airports, and the congestion of interstates, turnpikes and freeways. Facilitating Inter- and Intra-urban travel, such as downtown-to-airport, or metropolis-to-metropolis, or home-to-work. Perfect for dense urban environments worldwide. And all while offering the clean power of hydrogen for zero-emission travel. This vision for efficient, clean, delay-free mobility has been talked about for decades, but always waived aside as some kind of futurist vision. This future requires tackling hard problems in propulsion, airspace management, regulatory satisfaction and (not the least) technologies that seemed out of reach. Well, the future is upon us. What’s at stake? Serious impact on climate change. Affordable transportation. Widely available medical-flights. Timely disaster relief and recovery. Autonomous transport and delivery. On-Demand air taxis. Efficient emergency response. Ubiquitous border security. Economical bulk commodity deliveries. Simplified off-shore deliveries. Sustainable fleet support. NASA, FAA and industry have been laying the foundations for decades, starting with the NASA AGATE and SATS programs of the 1990’s to 2000’s, and the industrial initiatives in On-Demand Mobility such as DayJet, SATSair, LinearAir and many others. Now, some 20 years later, we’re poised to build and deliver e-VTOL, powered by clean, reliable hydrogen fuel cells, operated with more reliable simplified vehicle operations, and in more automated airspace capabilities. This paper summarizes the core strategy, progress and challenges in the certification program for a hydrogen fuel-cell powered e-VTOL having redundant power sources, redundant motors, redundant auto-pilots, and an airframe parachute. The authors believe the implications to operator training for safe and reliable transportation services for the public are central to strategies and industrial vision

    We determine the Nakayama automorphism of the almost Calabi-Yau algebra A associated to the braided subfactors or nimrep graphs associated to each SU(3) modular invariant.     From E_8 to F via T

    We argue that T-duality and F-theory appear automatically in the E_8 gauge bundle perspective of M-theory. The 11-dimensional supergravity four-form determines an E_8 bundle. If we compactify on a two-torus, this data specifies an LLE_8 bundle where LG is a centrally-extended loopgroup of G. If one of the circles of the torus is smaller than sqrt(alpha') then it is also smaller than a nontrivial circle S in the LLE_8 fiber and so a dimensional reduction on the total space of the bundle is not valid. We conjecture that S is the circle on which the T-dual type IIB theory is compactified, with the aforementioned torus playing the role of the F-theory torus. As tests we reproduce the T-dualities between NS5-branes and KK-monopoles, as well as D6 and D7-branes where we find the desired F-theory monodromy. Using Hull's proposal for massive IIA, this realization of T-duality allows us to confirm that the Romans mass is the central extension of our LE_8. In addition this construction immediately reproduces the conjectured formula for global topology change from T-duality with H-flux.Comment: 25 pages, 4 eps figure

    Strings on conifolds from strong coupling dynamics: quantitative results

    Three quantitative features of string theory on AdS_5 x X_5, for any (quasi)regular Sasaki-Einstein X_5, are recovered exactly from an expansion of field theory at strong coupling around configurations in the moduli space of vacua. These configurations can be thought of as a generalized matrix model of (local) commuting matrices. First, we reproduce the spectrum of scalar Kaluza-Klein modes on X_5. Secondly, we recover the precise spectrum of BMN string states, including a nontrivial dependence on the volume of X_5. Finally, we show how the radial direction in global AdS_5 emerges universally in these theories by exhibiting states dual to AdS giant gravitons.Comment: 1+28 pages. 1 figur

    Turbulent Supersonic/Hypersonic Heating Correlations for Open and Closed Cavities

    Supersonic/hypersonic laminar heating correlations that were developed for damage assessment analysis of atmospheric re-entry vehicles have been modified and extended to cover fully-turbulent conditions over rectangular cavity geometries that are aligned with the local velocity. Turbulent boundary layer properties were computationally determined and used to develop the cavity geometry parametrics and to correlate experimental closed cavity heating data to yield new relationships for the floor-averaged and centerline endwall peak-heating augmentation. With the form of the closed-cavity correlations established, historical data were used to develop new correlations for turbulent open-cavity heating

    Discourses of antagonism and desire : marketing for international students in neighbourhood schools

    This paper explores the consequences of these discourses for the ways that international students are identified and positioned within school communities. My argument is developed in four sections. The first describes my ongoing exploration into the impact of international student programmes in Australia. The second exemplifies my argument: exploring the day-to-day experiences of vice principals in two Victorian government state secondary schools as they market their schools, and examining the systemic and ontological discourses played out within those conversations. The third interrogates discourses of identity and difference, neo-liberalism and nave cosmopolitanism which I find shape teacher conversations about international student programmes. In the final section, I argue that the impact of the discourse formations implicit in teacher talk about international student programmes has been the objectification of international students and their ambivalent inclusion within the school community.<br /
