Dimensional effects in photoelectron spectra of Ag deposits on GaAs(110) surfaces
It is shown that the peak structure observed in angle-resolved photoelectron
spectra of metallic deposits can only be unambiguously associated to single
electronic states if the deposit has a two dimensional character (finite along
one spatial direction). In one and zero dimensions the density of states shows
peaks related to bunches of single electron states (the finer structure
associated to the latter may not always be experimentally resolved). The
characteristics of the peak structure strongly depend on the band dispersion in
the energy region where they appear. Results for the density of states and
photoemission yield for Ag crystallites on GaAs(110) are presented and compared

Isolation of Psoroptes scab mite microsatellite markers (Acari: Psoroptidae)
Nine microsatellite markers have been isolated from the scab mite,Psoroptes ovis. These markers have been tested for polymorphism in individual Psoroptes
mites originating from two hosts, the European rabbit,
Oryctolagus cuniculus, and sheep, Ovis aries. No
definitive picture of Psoroptes species’ status or interrelationships exists. This study provides the basis for a new molecular system to elucidate the systematics of groupings within the genus Psoroptes, allowing us to clarify the population dynamics and epidemiology of
the mites causing sheep scab world wide

Since its inception in the late 1950s, the field of Information Retrieval (IR) has developed tools that help people find, organize, and analyze information. The key early influences on the field are well-known. Among them are H. P. Luhn's pioneering work, the development of the vector space retrieval model by Salton and his students, Cleverdon's development of the Cranfield experimental methodology, Spärck Jones' development of idf, and a series of probabilistic retrieval models by Robertson and Croft. Majorana Neutrino Masses Can Save One Family Technicolour
We make non perturbative estimates of the electroweak radiative correction
parameter in dynamical symmetry breaking models with Majorana neutrino
masses. The Majorana masses are treated as perturbations to a Non Local Chiral
Model of the strong interactions. We argue that parameter ranges exist that

Standardization, calibration and innovation: a special issue on lithic microwear method
YesThis paper introduces a special issue of the Journal of Archaeological Science that considers the current state and future directions in lithic microwear analysis. There is considerable potential for lithic microwear analysis to reconstruct past human behaviour as it can provide direct insight into past activities. Consequently, it is a technique worthy of significant additional investment and continued development. To further the cause of methodological maturation within microwear analysis and to promote standardization, calibration, and innovation, the following collection of papers present various approaches and perspectives on how greater methodological refinement and increased reliability of results can and should be achieved. Many of these papers were part of a session held at the 2011 Society for American Archaeology Meeting (SAA) in Sacramento, California, while others were selected from the 2012 International Conference on Use-Wear Analysis in Faro, Portugal. The purpose of the SAA session and this special themed issue is essentially two-fold. The first is to promote awareness of the need for methodological standardization, calibration, and continuing innovation. The second is to open a serious dialogue about how these aims could be pursued and achieved.AAE was supported by the AHRC (AH/J007935/1). Study of Neutron-Induced Ionization in Helium and Argon Chamber Gases
Ion chambers used to monitor the secondary hadron and tertiary muon beam in
the NuMI neutrino beamline will be exposed to background particles, including
low energy neutrons produced in the beam dump. To understand these backgrounds,
we have studied Helium- and Argon-filled ionization chambers exposed to intense
neutron fluxes from PuBe neutron sources ( MeV). The sources emit
about 10 neutrons per second. The number of ion pairs in the chamber gas
volume per incident neutron is derived. While limited in precision because of a
large gamma ray background from the PuBe sources, our results are consistent
with the expectation that the neutrons interact purely elastically in the
chamber gas.Comment: accepted for publication in NIM
Wick's Theorem at Finite Temperature
We consider Wick's Theorem for finite temperature and finite volume systems.
Working at an operator level with a path ordered approach, we show that
contrary to claims in the literature, expectation values of normal ordered
products can be chosen to be zero and that results obtained are independent of
volume. Thus the path integral and operator approaches to finite temperature
and finite volume quantum field theories are indeed seen to be identical. The
conditions under which normal ordered products have simple symmetry properties

Real time thermal propagtors for massive gauge bosons
We derive Feynman rules for gauge theories exhibiting spontaneous symmetry
breaking using the real-time formalism of finite temperature field theory. We
also derive the thermal propagators where only the physical degrees of freedom
are given thermal boundary conditions. We analyse the abelian Higgs model and
find that these new propagators simplify the calculation of the thermal
contribution to the self energy.Comment: 7 pages, late
Noise characterization for LISA
We consider the general problem of estimating the inflight LISA noise power
spectra and cross-spectra, which are needed for detecting and estimating the
gravitational wave signals present in the LISA data. For the LISA baseline
design and in the long wavelength limit, we bound the error on all spectrum
estimators that rely on the use of the fully symmetric Sagnac combination
(). This procedure avoids biases in the estimation that would otherwise
be introduced by the presence of a strong galactic background in the LISA data.
We specialize our discussion to the detection and study of the galactic white
