Multiresolution analysis of active region magnetic structure and its correlation with the Mt. Wilson classification and flaring activity
Two different multi-resolution analyses are used to decompose the structure
of active region magnetic flux into concentrations of different size scales.
Lines separating these opposite polarity regions of flux at each size scale are
found. These lines are used as a mask on a map of the magnetic field gradient
to sample the local gradient between opposite polarity regions of given scale
sizes. It is shown that the maximum, average and standard deviation of the
magnetic flux gradient for alpha, beta, beta-gamma and beta-gamma-delta active
regions increase in the order listed, and that the order is maintained over all
length-scales. This study demonstrates that, on average, the Mt. Wilson
classification encodes the notion of activity over all length-scales in the
active region, and not just those length-scales at which the strongest flux
gradients are found. Further, it is also shown that the average gradients in
the field, and the average length-scale at which they occur, also increase in
the same order. Finally, there are significant differences in the gradient
distribution, between flaring and non-flaring active regions, which are
maintained over all length-scales. It is also shown that the average gradient
content of active regions that have large flares (GOES class 'M' and above) is
larger than that for active regions containing flares of all flare sizes; this

The Continuum Directed Random Polymer
Motivated by discrete directed polymers in one space and one time dimension,
we construct a continuum directed random polymer that is modeled by a
continuous path interacting with a space-time white noise. The strength of the
interaction is determined by an inverse temperature parameter beta, and for a
given beta and realization of the noise the path evolves in a Markovian way.
The transition probabilities are determined by solutions to the one-dimensional
stochastic heat equation. We show that for all beta > 0 and for almost all
realizations of the white noise the path measure has the same Holder continuity
and quadratic variation properties as Brownian motion, but that it is actually
singular with respect to the standard Wiener measure on C([0,1]).Comment: 21 page
Accidental Inflation in the Landscape
We study some aspects of fine tuning in inflationary scenarios within string
theory flux compactifications and, in particular, in models of accidental
inflation. We investigate the possibility that the apparent fine-tuning of the
low energy parameters of the theory needed to have inflation can be generically
obtained by scanning the values of the fluxes over the landscape. Furthermore,
we find that the existence of a landscape of eternal inflation in this model
provides us with a natural theory of initial conditions for the inflationary
period in our vacuum. We demonstrate how these two effects work in a small
corner of the landscape associated with the complex structure of the Calabi-Yau
manifold P^4_[1,1,1,6,9] by numerically investigating the flux vacua of a
reduced moduli space. This allows us to obtain the distribution of observable
parameters for inflation in this mini-landscape directly from the fluxes.Comment: 40 pages, 11 figure
The Free Energy of the Quantum Heisenberg Ferromagnet at Large Spin
We consider the spin-S ferromagnetic Heisenberg model in three dimensions, in
the absence of an external field. Spin wave theory suggests that in a suitable
temperature regime the system behaves effectively as a system of
non-interacting bosons (magnons). We prove this fact at the level of the
specific free energy: if and the inverse temperature in such a way that stays constant, we rigorously show that
the free energy per unit volume converges to the one suggested by spin wave
theory. The proof is based on the localization of the system in small boxes and
on upper and lower bounds on the local free energy, and it also provides

Inflation on an Open Racetrack
We present a variant of warped D-brane inflation by incorporating multiple
sets of holomorphically-embedded D7-branes involved in moduli stabilization
with extent into a warped throat. The resultant D3-brane motion depends on the
D7-brane configuration and the relative position of the D3-brane in these
backgrounds. The non-perturbative moduli stabilization superpotential takes the
racetrack form, but the additional D3-brane open string moduli dependence
provides more flexibilities in model building. For concreteness, we consider
D3-brane motion in the warped deformed conifold with the presence of multiple
D7-branes, and derive the scalar potential valid for the entire throat. By
explicit tuning of the microphysical parameters, we obtain inflationary
trajectories near an inflection point for various D7-brane configurations.
Moreover, the open racetrack potential admits approximate Minkowski vacua
before uplifting. We demonstrate with a concrete D-brane inflation model where
the Hubble scale during inflation can exceed the gravitino mass. Finally, the
multiple sets of D7-branes present in this open racetrack setup also provides a
mechanism to stabilize the D3-brane to metastable vacua in the intermediate

Are Solar Active Regions with Major Flares More Fractal, Multifractal, or Turbulent than Others?
Multiple recent investigations of solar magnetic field measurements have
raised claims that the scale-free (fractal) or multiscale (multifractal)
parameters inferred from the studied magnetograms may help assess the eruptive
potential of solar active regions, or may even help predict major flaring
activity stemming from these regions. We investigate these claims here, by
testing three widely used scale-free and multiscale parameters, namely, the
fractal dimension, the multifractal structure function and its inertial-range
exponent, and the turbulent power spectrum and its power-law index, on a
comprehensive data set of 370 timeseries of active-region magnetograms (17,733
magnetograms in total) observed by SOHO's Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) over
the entire Solar Cycle 23. We find that both flaring and non-flaring active
regions exhibit significant fractality, multifractality, and non-Kolmogorov
turbulence but none of the three tested parameters manages to distinguish
active regions with major flares from flare-quiet ones. We also find that the
multiscale parameters, but not the scale-free fractal dimension, depend
sensitively on the spatial resolution and perhaps the observational
characteristics of the studied magnetograms. Extending previous works, we
attribute the flare-forecasting inability of fractal and multifractal
parameters to i) a widespread multiscale complexity caused by a possible
underlying self-organization in turbulent solar magnetic structures, flaring
and non-flaring alike, and ii) a lack of correlation between the fractal
properties of the photosphere and overlying layers, where solar eruptions
occur. However useful for understanding solar magnetism, therefore, scale-free
and multiscale measures may not be optimal tools for active-region
characterization in terms of eruptive ability or, ultimately,for major

Detection, evaluation, and management of preoperative anaemia in the elective orthopaedic surgical patient: NATA guidelines
Previously undiagnosed anaemia is common in elective orthopaedic surgical patients and is associated with increased likelihood of blood transfusion and increased perioperative morbidity and mortality. A standardized approach for the detection, evaluation, and management of anaemia in this setting has been identified as an unmet medical need. A multidisciplinary panel of physicians was convened by the Network for Advancement of Transfusion Alternatives (NATA) with the aim of developing practice guidelines for the detection, evaluation, and management of preoperative anaemia in elective orthopaedic surgery. A systematic literature review and critical evaluation of the evidence was performed, and recommendations were formulated according to the method proposed by the Grades of Recommendation Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) Working Group. We recommend that elective orthopaedic surgical patients have a haemoglobin (Hb) level determination 28 days before the scheduled surgical procedure if possible (Grade 1C). We suggest that the patient's target Hb before elective surgery be within the normal range, according to the World Health Organization criteria (Grade 2C). We recommend further laboratory testing to evaluate anaemia for nutritional deficiencies, chronic renal insufficiency, and/or chronic inflammatory disease (Grade 1C). We recommend that nutritional deficiencies be treated (Grade 1C). We suggest that erythropoiesis-stimulating agents be used for anaemic patients in whom nutritional deficiencies have been ruled out, corrected, or both (Grade 2A). Anaemia should be viewed as a serious and treatable medical condition, rather than simply an abnormal laboratory value. Implementation of anaemia management in the elective orthopaedic surgery setting will improve patient outcomes

Penelitian tugas akhir ini mengkaji tentang Profil Wisatawan di
Museum Radya Pustaka Surakarta. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk
mengetahui dari daerah mana saja wisatawan yang berkunjung ke Museum
Radya Pustaka, bagaimana ciri-ciri wisatawan yang berkunjung ke Museum
Radya Pustaka serta harapan-harapan yang diinginkan wisatawan terhadap
Museum Radya Pustaka.
Penelitian dilakukan dengan metode kualitatif. Pengumpulan data
dilakukan melalui wawancara dengan narasumber wisatawan yang berkujung
di Museum Radya Pustaka Surakarta tempat penulis melakukan penelitian,
serta studi pustaka dan studi dokumen guna menambah sumber data.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) Sebagian besar wisatawan
yang datang berasal dari Semarang sebesar 32%. (2) Mayoritas wisatawan
yang berkunjung ke Museum Radya Pustaka berusia antara 17-25 tahun dan
kebanyakan dari mereka adalah pelajar atau mahasiswa dengan prosentase
52%. (3) Sebagian besar wisatawan yang datang ke Museum Radya Pustaka
adalah bertujuan untuk melakukan penelitian yaitu sebesar 34%. (4) Harapan
wisatawan yang berkunjung terhadap kelangsungan Museum Radya Pustaka
sebagian besar adalah agar ditingkatkan lagi pengelolaan dan keamanan
museum, agar kejadian hilangnya benda-benda koleksi museum tidak terulang
lagi dikemudian hari.
Kesimpulan dari hasil penelitian ini bahwa wisatawan yang berkujung
ke Museum Radya Pustaka Surakarta mayoritas berasal dari Semarang,
mayoritas berusia 17-25 tahun dan kebanyakan dari mereka adalah berprofesi
sebagai pelajar dan mahasiswa. Kebanyakan wisatawan yang datang bertujuan
untuk melakukan penelitian, serta harapan wisatawan terhadap Museum
Radya Pustaka adalah supaya lebih ditingkatkan lagi pengelolaan dan
keamanan museum
