Ablation article and method
An ablation article, such as a conical heat shield, having an ablating surface is provided with at least one discrete area of at least one seed material, such as aluminum. When subjected to ablation conditions, the seed material is ablated. Radiation emanating from the ablated seed material is detected to analyze ablation effects without disturbing the ablation surface. By providing different seed materials having different radiation characteristics, the ablating effects on various areas of the ablating surface can be analyzed under any prevailing ablation conditions. The ablating article can be provided with means for detecting the radiation characteristics of the ablated seed material to provide a self-contained analysis unit
Shuttle electrical environment
Part of an AFGL payload flown on the STS-4 mission consisted of experiments to measure in-situ electric fields, electron densities, and vehicle charging. During this flight some 11 hours of data were acquired ranging from 5 minute snapshots up to continuous half-orbits. These experiments are described and results presented for such vehicle induced events as a main engine burn, thruster firings and water dumps in addition to undisturbed periods. The main characteristic of all the vehicle induced events is shown to be an enhancement in the low frequency noise (less than 2 kHz), in both the electrostatic and electron irregularity (delta N/N) spectra. The non-event results indicate that the electrostatic broadband emissions show a white noise characteristic in the low frequency range up to 2 kHz at an amplitude of 10 db above the shuttle design specification limit, falling below that limit above 10 kHz. The vehicle potential remained within the range of -3 to +1 volt throughout the flight which exhibits normal behavior for a satellite in a low equatorial orbit
Bose-Einstein Correlations and the Equation of State of Nuclear Matter
Within a relativistic hydrodynamic framework, we use four different equations
of state of nuclear matter to compare to experimental spectra from CERN/SPS
experiments NA44 and NA49. Freeze-out hypersurfaces and Bose-Einstein
correlation functions for identical pion pairs are discussed. We find that
two-pion Bose-Einstein interferometry measures the relationship between the
temperature and the energy density in the equation of state during the late
hadronic stage of the fireball expansion. Little sensitivity of the
light-hadron data to a quark-gluon plasma phase-transition is seen.Comment: 4 pages, including 4 figures. You can also download a PostScript file

Impact of disorder on the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state
We compare the energy gap of the \nu=5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect state
obtained in conventional high mobility modulation doped quantum well samples
with those obtained in high quality GaAs transistors (heterojunction insulated
gate field-effect transistors). We are able to identify the different roles
that long range and short range disorders play in the 5/2 state and observe
that the long range potential fluctuations are more detrimental to the strength
of the 5/2 state than short-range potential disorder.Comment: PRL 106, 206806 (2011
The On The Fly Imaging Technique
The On-The-Fly (OTF) imaging technique enables single-dish radio telescopes
to construct images of small areas of the sky with greater efficiency and
accuracy. This paper describes the practical application of the OTF imaging
technique. By way of example the implementation of the OTF imaging technique at
the NRAO 12 Meter Telescope is described. Specific requirements for data
sampling, image formation, and Doppler correction are discussed.Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures, accepted A&
Wind turbine generator rotor blade concepts with low cost potential
Four processed for producing blades are examined. Two use filament winding techniques and two involve filling a mold or form to produce all or part of a blade. The processes are described and a comparison is made of cost, material properties, design and free vibration characteristics. Conclusions are made regarding the feasibility of each process to produce low cost, structurally adequate blades
Whole Earth Telescope observations of the hot helium atmosphere pulsating white dwarf EC 20058-5234
We present the analysis of a total of 177h of high-quality optical
time-series photometry of the helium atmosphere pulsating white dwarf (DBV) EC
20058-5234. The bulk of the observations (135h) were obtained during a WET
campaign (XCOV15) in July 1997 that featured coordinated observing from 4
southern observatory sites over an 8-day period. The remaining data (42h) were
obtained in June 2004 at Mt John Observatory in NZ over a one-week observing
period. This work significantly extends the discovery observations of this
low-amplitude (few percent) pulsator by increasing the number of detected
frequencies from 8 to 18, and employs a simulation procedure to confirm the
reality of these frequencies to a high level of significance (1 in 1000). The
nature of the observed pulsation spectrum precludes identification of unique
pulsation mode properties using any clearly discernable trends. However, we
have used a global modelling procedure employing genetic algorithm techniques
to identify the n, l values of 8 pulsation modes, and thereby obtain
asteroseismic measurements of several model parameters, including the stellar
mass (0.55 M_sun) and T_eff (~28200 K). These values are consistent with those
derived from published spectral fitting: T_eff ~ 28400 K and log g ~ 7.86. We
also present persuasive evidence from apparent rotational mode splitting for
two of the modes that indicates this compact object is a relatively rapid
rotator with a period of 2h. In direct analogy with the corresponding
properties of the hydrogen (DAV) atmosphere pulsators, the stable low-amplitude
pulsation behaviour of EC 20058 is entirely consistent with its inferred
effective temperature, which indicates it is close to the blue edge of the DBV
instability strip. (abridged)Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables, MNRAS accepte
