The effect of the enucleation of one eye on anterograde and retrograde labelling in geniculo-cortical, cortico-geniculate and commissural projections was investigated in adult cats by means of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and tritiated aminoacids. It was found that in addition to the immediate decrease of retrograde labelling with HRP in the cortical projections from the deafferented A-laminae of the dorsal part of the lateral geniculate nucleus (Singer et al. 1977) there is a further reduction which lasts up to 75 days after enucleation. At 146 and 363 days after enucleation a slight increase in the number of labelled neurones was noted in the deafferented lamina. Qualitative assessment did not reveal any changes of anterograde labelling with tritiated amino acids in geniculo-cortical, cortico-geniculate and commissural axones. In addition, the retrograde labelling with HRP in cortico-geniculate and commissural projections seemed to be unaffected by eye enucleation

On the reduction of the available bandwidth estimation error through clustering with K-means

There are different tools to estimate the end to end available bandwidth (AB). These tools use techniques which send pairs of packets to the network and observe changes in dispersion or propagation delays to infer the value of the AB. Given the fractal nature of Internet traffic, these observations are prompt to errors affecting the accuracy of the estimation. This article presents the application of a clustering technique to reduce the estimation error due to wrong observations of the available bandwidth in the network. The clustering technique used is K-means which is applied to a tool called Traceband that is originally based on a Hidden Markov Model to perform the estimation. It is shown that using K-means in Traceband can improve its accuracy in 67.45 % when the cross traffic is about 70% of the end-to-end capacity

Overhead in available bandwidth estimation tools: Evaluation and analysis

Current Available Bandwidth Estimation Tools (ABET) insert into the network probing packets to perform a single estimation. The utilization of these packets makes ABET intrusive and prone to errors since they consume part of the available bandwidth they are measuring. This paper presents a comparative of Overhead Estimation Tools (OET) analysis of representative ABET: Abing, Diettopp, Pathload, PathChirp, Traceband, IGI, PTR, Assolo, and Wbest. By using Internet traffic, the study shows that the insertion of probing packets is a factor that affects two metrics associated to the estimation. First, it is shown that the accuracy is affected proportionally to the amount of probing traffic. Secondly, the Estimation Time (ET) is increased in high congested end-to-end links when auto-induced congestion tools are use

It is a reality the increasing number of the lumbar fusions. Clinical results show that the anteroposterior lumbar fusions achieve greater success rates than the posterolateral ones. A paper review of the different ways of lumbar fusion is carried out whit the update of the anterior column support concept. Indications and advantages: posterior, anterior and minimal invasive ones. The last spine cages used for anterior column support art classified. Advantages and drawbacks of the both approaches anterior and posterior are studied

Two-state theory of nonlinear Stochastic Resonance

    Get PDF
An amenable, analytical two-state description of the nonlinear population dynamics of a noisy bistable system driven by a rectangular subthreshold signal is put forward. Explicit expressions for the driven population dynamics, the correlation function (its coherent and incoherent part), the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the Stochastic Resonance (SR) gain are obtained. Within a suitably chosen range of parameter values this reduced description yields anomalous SR-gains exceeding unity and, simultaneously, gives rise to a non-monotonic behavior of the SNR vs. the noise strength. The analytical results agree well with those obtained from numerical solutions of the Langevin equation.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

The shaky foundations of simulating single-cell RNA sequencing data

BACKGROUND: With the emergence of hundreds of single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) datasets, the number of computational tools to analyze aspects of the generated data has grown rapidly. As a result, there is a recurring need to demonstrate whether newly developed methods are truly performant-on their own as well as in comparison to existing tools. Benchmark studies aim to consolidate the space of available methods for a given task and often use simulated data that provide a ground truth for evaluations, thus demanding a high quality standard results credible and transferable to real data. RESULTS: Here, we evaluated methods for synthetic scRNA-seq data generation in their ability to mimic experimental data. Besides comparing gene- and cell-level quality control summaries in both one- and two-dimensional settings, we further quantified these at the batch- and cluster-level. Secondly, we investigate the effect of simulators on clustering and batch correction method comparisons, and, thirdly, which and to what extent quality control summaries can capture reference-simulation similarity. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that most simulators are unable to accommodate complex designs without introducing artificial effects, they yield over-optimistic performance of integration and potentially unreliable ranking of clustering methods, and it is generally unknown which summaries are important to ensure effective simulation-based method comparisons

    A low-voltage low-power front-end for wearable EEG systems

    No full text
A low-voltage and low-power front-end for miniaturized, wearable EEG systems is presented. The instrumentation amplifier, which removes the electrode drift and conditions the signal for a 10-bit A/D converter, combines a chopping strategy with quasi-FGMOS (QFG) transistors to minimize low frequency noise whilst enabling operation at 1 V supply. QFG devices are also key to the A/D converter operating at 1.2 V with 70dB of SNR and an oversampling ratio of 64. The whole system consumes less than 2uW at 1.2V.Published versio

    Microcanonical quantum fluctuation theorems

Previously derived expressions for the characteristic function of work performed on a quantum system by a classical external force are generalized to arbitrary initial states of the considered system and to Hamiltonians with degenerate spectra. In the particular case of microcanonical initial states explicit expressions for the characteristic function and the corresponding probability density of work are formulated. Their classical limit as well as their relations to the respective canonical expressions are discussed. A fluctuation theorem is derived that expresses the ratio of probabilities of work for a process and its time reversal to the ratio of densities of states of the microcanonical equilibrium systems with corresponding initial and final Hamiltonians. From this Crooks-type fluctuation theorem a relation between entropies of different systems can be derived which does not involve the time reversed process. This entropy-from-work theorem provides an experimentally accessible way to measure entropies.Comment: revised and extended versio
