Hellinger Distance Trees for Imbalanced Streams
Classifiers trained on data sets possessing an imbalanced class distribution
are known to exhibit poor generalisation performance. This is known as the
imbalanced learning problem. The problem becomes particularly acute when we
consider incremental classifiers operating on imbalanced data streams,
especially when the learning objective is rare class identification. As
accuracy may provide a misleading impression of performance on imbalanced data,
existing stream classifiers based on accuracy can suffer poor minority class
performance on imbalanced streams, with the result being low minority class
recall rates. In this paper we address this deficiency by proposing the use of
the Hellinger distance measure, as a very fast decision tree split criterion.
We demonstrate that by using Hellinger a statistically significant improvement
in recall rates on imbalanced data streams can be achieved, with an acceptable

Retrospective and prospective evaluations of mammography screening narratives: The role of own experience
We investigated the role of previous experience when providing summary judgments of mammography narratives. A total of 807 women who either did or did not have previous experience of a mammogram were presented with a written description of a mammography visit. We manipulated the presentation position of a negative element within the narrative to alter its accessibility in memory and determine whether the latter impacted equally on two types of summary judgments. After the narrative presentation, participants were asked to provide both retrospective and prospective evaluations, that is, summary judgments about the described event and an appraisal of the likelihood of participating in future instances of such event, respectively. A recency effect was observed only for retrospective but not for prospective evaluations. When examined only for the subset of women who had undergone a mammography visit themselves, prospective evaluations were shown to be predicted by the reported quality of the mammography participants experienced themselves. The findings support and extend the accessibility model of emotional self-report and suggest that own experience leaks into evaluations of hypothetical scenarios by selectively impacting on prospective evaluations
Magnetodielectric coupling of infrared phonons in single crystal CuOSeO
Reflection and transmission as a function of temperature have been measured
on a single crystal of the magnetoelectric ferrimagnetic compound
CuOSeO utilizing light spanning the far infrared to the visible
portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The complex dielectric function and
optical properties were obtained via Kramers-Kronig analysis and by fits to a
Drude-Lortentz model. The fits of the infrared phonons show a magnetodielectric
effect near the transition temperature (~K). Assignments to
strong far infrared phonon modes have been made, especially those exhibiting
anomalous behavior around the transition temperature
Solution to the Equations of the Moment Expansions
We develop a formula for matching a Taylor series about the origin and an
asymptotic exponential expansion for large values of the coordinate. We test it
on the expansion of the generating functions for the moments and connected
moments of the Hamiltonian operator. In the former case the formula produces
the energies and overlaps for the Rayleigh-Ritz method in the Krylov space. We
choose the harmonic oscillator and a strongly anharmonic oscillator as
illustrative examples for numerical test. Our results reveal some features of
the connected-moments expansion that were overlooked in earlier studies and
applications of the approach
A recombinant bovine herpesvirus-4 vectored vaccine delivered via intranasal nebulization elicits viral neutralizing antibody titers in cattle
Recombinant herpesvirus vaccine vectors offer distinct advantages in next-generation vaccine development, primarily due to the ability to establish persistent infections to provide sustainable antigen responses in the host. Recombinant bovine herpesvirus-4 (BoHV-4) has been previously shown to elicit protective immunity in model laboratory animal species against a variety of pathogens. For the first time, we describe the induction of antigen-specific immune responses to two delivered antigens in the host species after intranasal nebulization of recombinant BoHV-4 expressing the chimeric peptide containing the bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) glycoprotein E2 and the bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1) glycoprotein D (BoHV-4-A-CMV-IgK-gE2gD-TM). In this study, four cattle were immunized via intranasal nebulization with the recombinant BoHV-4 construct. Two of the cattle were previously infected with wild-type BoHV-4, and both developed detectable serologic responses to BVDV and BoHV-1. All four immunized cattle developed detectable viral neutralizing antibody responses to BVDV, and one steer developed a transient viral neutralizing response to BoHV-1. Approximately one year after immunization, immunosuppressive doses of the glu-cocorticoid dexamethasone were administered intravenously to all four cattle. Within two weeks of immunosuppression, all animals developed viral neutralizing antibody responses to BoHV-1, and all animals maintained BVDV viral neutralizing capacity. Overall, nebulization of BoHV-4-A-CMV-IgK-gE2gD-TM persistently infects cattle, is capable of eliciting antigen-specific immunity following immunization, including in the presence of pre-existing BoHV-4 immunity, and recrudescence of the virus boosts the immune response to BoHV-4-vectored antigens. These results indicate that BoHV-4 is a viable and attractive vaccine delivery platform for use in cattle
The Effect of Hypoxia on the Ability of Differentiated Human Dental Pulp Stem Cells to Promote Endothelial Cell Proliferation and Neurite Outgrowth In Vitro
Devitrite-based optical diffusers.
Devitrite is a novel material produced by heat treatment of commercial soda-lime-silica glass. It consists of fans of needle-like crystals which can extend up to several millimeters and have interspacings of up to a few hundred nanometers. To date, only the material properties of devitrite have been reported, and there has been a distinct lack of research on using it for optical applications. In this study, we demonstrate that randomly oriented fans of devitrite crystals can act as highly efficient diffusers for visible light. Devitrite crystals produce phase modulation of light because of their relatively high anisotropy. The nanoscale spacings between these needles enable light to be diffused to large scattering angles. Experimentally measured results suggest that light diffusion patterns with beam widths of up to 120° are produced. Effect of silver content on the structure and antibacterial activity of silver-doped phosphate-based glasses
Staphylococcus aureus can cause a range of diseases, such as osteomyelitis, as well as colonize implanted medical devices. In most instances the organism forms biofilms that not only are resistant to the body's defense mechanisms but also display decreased susceptibilities to antibiotics. In the present study, we have examined the effect of increasing silver contents in phosphate-based glasses to prevent the formation of S. aureus biofilms. Silver was found to be an effective bactericidal agent against S. aureus biofilms, and the rate of silver ion release (0.42 to 1.22 µg·mm–2·h–1) from phosphate-based glass was found to account for the variation in its bactericidal effect. Analysis of biofilms by confocal microscopy indicated that they consisted of an upper layer of viable bacteria together with a layer (20 µm) of nonviable cells on the glass surface. Our results showed that regardless of the silver contents in these glasses (10, 15, or 20 mol%) the silver exists in its +1 oxidation state, which is known to be a highly effective bactericidal agent compared to that of silver in other oxidation states (+2 or +3). Analysis of the glasses by 31P nuclear magnetic resonance imaging and high-energy X-ray diffraction showed that it is the structural rearrangement of the phosphate network that is responsible for the variation in silver ion release and the associated bactericidal effectiveness. Thus, an understanding of the glass structure is important in interpreting the in vitro data and also has important clinical implications for the potential use of the phosphate-based glasses in orthopedic applications to deliver silver ions to combat S. aureus biofilm infections
The Sources of b-Quarks at the Tevatron and their Correlations
The leading-log order QCD hard scattering Monte-Carlo models of HERWIG,
ISAJET, and PYTHIA are used to study the sources of b-quarks at the Tevatron.
The reactions responsible for producing b and bbar quarks are separated into
three categories; flavor creation, flavor excitation, and
parton-shower/fragmentation. Flavor creation corresponds to the production of a
b-bbar pair by gluon fusion or by annihilation of light quarks, while flavor
excitation corresponds to a b or bbar quark being knocked out of the
initial-state by a gluon or a light quark or antiquark. The third source occurs
when a b-bbar pair is produced within a parton shower or during the
fragmentation process of a gluon or a light quark or antiquark (includes gluon
splitting). The QCD Monte-Carlo models indicate that all three sources of
b-quarks are important at the Tevatron and when combined they qualitatively
describe the inclusive cross-section data. Correlations between the b and bbar
quark are very different for the three sources and can be used to isolate the
