A reassessment of Antarctic plateau reactive nitrogen based on ANTCI 2003 airborne and ground based measurements
The first airborne measurements of nitric oxide (NO) on the Antarctic plateau have demonstrated that the previously reported elevated levels of this species extend well beyond the immediate vicinity of South Pole. Although the current database is still relatively weak and critical laboratory experiments are still needed, the findings here suggest that the chemical uniqueness of the plateau may be substantially greater than first reported. For example, South Pole ground-based findings have provided new evidence showing that the dominant process driving the release of nitrogen from the snowpack during the spring/summer season (post-depositional loss) is photochemical in nature with evaporative processes playing a lesser role. There is also new evidence suggesting that nitrogen, in the form of nitrate, may undergo multiple recycling within a given photochemical season. Speculation here is that this may be a unique property of the plateau and much related to its having persistent cold temperatures even during summer. These conditions promote the efficient adsorption of molecules like HNO3 (and very likely HO2NO2) onto snow-pack surface ice where we have hypothesized enhanced photochemical processing can occur, leading to the efficient release of NOx to the atmosphere. In addition, to these process-oriented tentative conclusions, the findings from the airborne studies, in conjunction with modeling exercises suggest a new paradigm for the plateau atmosphere. The near-surface atmosphere over this massive region can be viewed as serving as much more than a temporary reservoir or holding tank for imported chemical species. It defines an immense atmospheric chemical reactor which is capable of modifying the chemical characteristics of select atmospheric constituents. This reactor has most likely been in place over geological time, and may have led to the chemical modulation of some trace species now found in ice cores. Reactive nitrogen has played a critical role in both establishing and in maintaining this reactor. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
The Northern Middle Lobe of Centaurus A: Circumgalactic Gas in a Starburst Wind
We present deep ultraviolet (GALEX), radio continuum (VLA) and H-alpha (Magellan) images of the circumgalactic medium around Centaurus A (NGC5128). We focus on the Northern Middle Lobe (NML), a region extending more than 50kpc beyond the galaxy and known to host a collection of striking phenomena: emission line filaments, recent star formation, disrupted HI/molecular gas streams, and short-lived X-ray clouds. Far UV emission is tightly correlated with H-alpha emission for more than 50kpc, and loosely associated with a filament of X-ray clouds and with the radio continuum emission. The radio emission in the NML region does not appear to be an extension of the inner radio jet (10kpc) or a typical radio lobe. We speculate that the "weather" seen in the NML region is a short-lived phenomenon, caused by an outflow encountering cool gas deposited by one of the recent merger/encounter events which have characterized the history of NGC5128
A survey of automatic teller machine usage across the adult lifespan.
The purpose of this study was to analyze automatic teller machine (ATM) usage across the adult life span. We conducted an extensive survey of 9000 people in the Memphis and Atlanta metropolitan areas. Approximately 17% of those people responded. The survey assessed detailed demographic information, experience with technology in general, experience specifically related to ATMs, problems and dislikes with ATMs, and reasons that people do not use ATMs. The survey provided a valuable set of data. First, we have detailed information about the demographics and individual characteristics of ATM users and nonusers; importantly, these data are stratified across the adult life span. In addition, we know the likes and dislikes of ATM users and the types of problems they typically have using ATMs. Moreover, we have a detailed analysis of why adults of all ages may choose not to use ATMs. Training and design implications of these data are discussed
GALEX UV Spectroscopy and Deep Imaging of LIRGs in the ELAIS S1 field
The ELAIS S1 field was observed by GALEX in both its Wide Spectroscopic and
Deep Imaging Survey modes. This field was previously observed by the Infrared
Space Observatory and we made use of the catalogue of multi-wavelength data
published by the ELAIS consortium to select galaxies common to the two samples.
Among the 959 objects with GALEX spectroscopy, 88 are present in the ELAIS
catalog and 19 are galaxies with an optical spectroscopic redshift. The
distribution of redshifts covers the range . The selected galaxies
have bolometric IR luminosities (deduced from the flux using ISOCAM) which means that we cover a wide range of galaxies from
normal to Ultra Luminous IR Galaxies. The mean () UV luminosity (not
corrected for extinction) amounts to
L_\sun for the low-z () sample. The UV slope (assuming
) correlates with the GALEX FUV-NUV color if
the sample is restricted to galaxies below . Taking advantage of the
UV and IR data, we estimate the dust attenuation from the IR/UV ratio and
compare it to the UV slope . We find that it is not possible to uniquely
estimate the dust attenuation from for our sample of galaxies. These
galaxies are highly extinguished with a median value .
Once the dust correction applied, the UV- and IR-based SFRs correlate. For the
closest galaxy with the best quality spectrum, we see a feature consistent with
being produced by a bump near 220nm in the attenuation curve.Comment: This paper has been published as part of the GALEX ApJL Special Issue

The Star Formation Rate Function of the Local Universe
We have derived the bivariate luminosity function for the far ultraviolet
(1530Angstroms) and far infrared (60 microns). We used matched GALEX and IRAS
data, and redshifts from NED and PSC-z. We have derived a total star formation
luminosity function phi(L_{tot}), with L_{tot} = L_{FUV}+L_{FIR}. Using these,
we determined the cosmic ``star formation rate'' function and density for the
local universe. The total SFR function is fit very well by a log-normal
distribution over five decades of luminosity. We find that the bivariate
luminosity function phi(L_{FUV},L_{FIR}) shows a bimodal behavior, with L_{FIR}
tracking L_{FUV} for L_{TOT}< 10^10 L_sun, and L_{FUV} saturating at 10^10
L_sun, while L_{TOT} L_{FIR} for higher luminosities. We also calculate the SFR

Training older adults to use automatic teller machines.
The present study assessed the success of several instructional programs in teaching the use of automatic teller machines (ATMs). Fifty-six older adults (aged 61 to 81) participated in the study, randomly assigned to each of four, 14-member groups. The description group received only a general overview of an ATM; the text guide group received written instructions for performing various transactions on an ATM; the pictorial guide group received written instructions accompanied by pictures of corresponding ATM screens; and the online tutorial group completed a step-by-step tutorial on a simulated ATM. Participants practiced on an ATM simulator. They were tested after a 24-h interval on their ability to perform familiar transactions on an unfamiliar ATM simulator and to perform completely novel transactions. Accuracy was best for the online tutorial group, intermediate for the text and pictorial guide groups, and worst for the description group. These data demonstrate both the importance of providing older adults with ATM training and the fact that the type of training influences the level of performance. The online tutorial, which provided specific practice on the task components, best facilitated acquisition and transfer performance
Epidemiological associations between brachycephaly and upper respiratory tract disorders in dogs attending veterinary practices in England
Background: Brachycephalic dog breeds are increasingly common. Canine brachycephaly has been associated with upper respiratory tract (URT) disorders but reliable prevalence data remain lacking. Using primary-care veterinary clinical data, this study aimed to report the prevalence and breed-type risk factors for URT disorders in dogs. Results: The sampling frame included 170,812 dogs attending 96 primary-care veterinary clinics participating within the VetCompass Programme. Two hundred dogs were randomly selected from each of three extreme brachycephalic breed types (Bulldog, French Bulldog and Pug) and three common small-to medium sized breed types (moderate brachycephalic: Yorkshire Terrier and non-brachycephalic: Border Terrier and West Highland White Terrier). Information on all URT disorders recorded was extracted from individual patient records. Disorder prevalence was compared between groups using the chi-squared test or Fisher’s test, as appropriate. Risk factor analysis used multivariable logistic regression modelling. During the study, 83 (6.9 %) study dogs died. Extreme brachycephalic dogs (median longevity: 8.6 years, IQR: 2.4-10.8) were significantly younger at death than the moderate and non-brachycephalic group of dogs (median 12.7 years, IQR 11.1-15.0) (P \u3c 0.001). A higher proportion of deaths in extreme brachycephalic breed types were associated with URT disorders (4/24 deaths, 16.7 %) compared with the moderate and non-brachycephalic group (0/59 deaths, 0.0 %) (P = 0.001). The prevalence of having at least one URT disorder in the extreme brachycephalic group was higher (22.0 %, 95 % confidence interval (CI): 18.0-26.0) than in the moderate and non-brachycephalic group (9.7 %, 95 % CI: 7.1-12.3, P \u3c 0.001). The prevalence of URT disorders varied significantly by breed type: Bulldogs 19.5 %, French Bulldogs 20.0 %, Pugs 26.5 %, Border Terriers 9.0 %, West Highland White Terriers 7.0 % and Yorkshire Terriers 13.0 % (P \u3c 0.001). After accounting for the effects of age, bodyweight, sex, neutering and insurance, extreme brachycephalic dogs had 3.5 times (95 % CI: 2.4-5.0, P \u3c 0.001) the odds of at least one URT disorder compared with the moderate and non-brachycephalic group. Conclusions: In summary, this study reports that URT disorders are commonly diagnosed in Bulldog, French Bulldog, Pug, Border Terrier, WHWT and Yorkshire Terrier dogs attending primary-care veterinary practices in England. The three extreme brachycephalic breed types (Bulldog, French Bulldog and Pug) were relatively short-lived and predisposed to URT disorders compared with three other small-to-medium size breed types that are commonly owned (moderate brachycephalic Yorkshire Terrier and non-brachycephalic: Border Terrier and WHWT). Conclusions: In summary, this study reports that URT disorders are commonly diagnosed in Bulldog, French Bulldog, Pug, Border Terrier, WHWT and Yorkshire Terrier dogs attending primary-care veterinary practices in England. The three extreme brachycephalic breed types (Bulldog, French Bulldog and Pug) were relatively short-lived and predisposed to URT disorders compared with three other small-to-medium size breed types that are commonly owned (moderate brachycephalic Yorkshire Terrier and non-brachycephalic: Border Terrier and WHWT)
Star formation in the nearby universe: the ultraviolet and infrared points of view
This work presents the main ultraviolet (UV) and far-infrared (FIR)
properties of two samples of nearby galaxies selected from the GALEX (\AA, hereafter NUV) and IRAS (m) surveys respectively.
They are built in order to get detection at both wavelengths for most of the
galaxies. Star formation rate (SFR) estimators based on the UV and FIR
emissions are compared. Systematic differences are found between the SFR
estimators for individual galaxies based on the NUV fluxes corrected for dust
attenuation and on the total IR luminosity. A combined estimator based on NUV
and IR luminosities seems to be the best proxy over the whole range of values
of SFR. Although both samples present similar average values of the birthrate
parameter b, their star-formation-related properties are substantially
different: NUV-selected galaxies tend to show larger values of for lower
masses, SFRs and dust attenuations, supporting previous scenarios for the star
formation history (SFH). Conversely, about 20% of the FIR-selected galaxies
show high values of , SFR and NUV attenuation. These galaxies, most of them
being LIRGs and ULIRGs, break down the downsizing picture for the SFH, however
their relative contribution per unit volume is small in the local Universe.
Finally, the cosmic SFR density of the local Universe is estimated in a

The Calibration and Data Products of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer
We describe the calibration status and data products pertaining to the GR2
and GR3 data releases of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX). These releases
have identical pipeline calibrations that are significantly improved over the
GR1 data release. GALEX continues to survey the sky in the Far Ultraviolet
(FUV, ~154 nm) and Near Ultraviolet (NUV, ~232 nm) bands, providing
simultaneous imaging with a pair of photon counting, microchannel plate, delay
line readout detectors. These 1.25 degree field-of-view detectors are
well-suited to ultraviolet observations because of their excellent red
rejection and negligible background. A dithered mode of observing and photon
list output pose complex requirements on the data processing pipeline,
entangling detector calibrations and aspect reconstruction algorithms. Recent
improvements have achieved photometric repeatability of 0.05 and 0.03 mAB in
the FUV and NUV, respectively. We have detected a long term drift of order 1%
FUV and 6% NUV over the mission. Astrometric precision is of order 0.5" RMS in
both bands. In this paper we provide the GALEX user with a broad overview of
the calibration issues likely to be confronted in the current release.
Improvements are likely as the GALEX mission continues into an extended phase
with a healthy instrument, no consumables, and increased opportunities for
