The Planck-ATCA Co-eval Observations (PACO) project: the bright sample
The Planck-ATCA Co-eval Observations (PACO) have provided flux density
measurements of well defined samples of AT20G radio sources at frequencies
below and overlapping with Planck frequency bands, almost simultaneously with
Planck observations. We have observed with the Australia Telescope Compact
Array (ATCA) a total of 482 sources in the frequency range between 4.5 and 40
GHz in the period between July 2009 and August 2010. Several sources were
observed more than once. In this paper we present the aims of the project, the
selection criteria, and the observation and data reduction procedures. We also
discuss the data in total intensity for a complete sample of 189 sources with
S(20 GHz)>500 mJy, Galactic latitude |b|>5deg, and declination <-30deg, and
some statistical analysis of the spectral behaviour and variability of this
sample, referred to as the "bright PACO sample". Finally we discuss how these
data could be used to transfer absolute calibrations to ground based telescopes
using the CMB dipole calibrated flux densities measured by the Planck

Prevalence and risk factors for atopic disease in a population of preschool children in Rome: Challenges to early intervention
Background: Allergic diseases are complex identities determined by an interplay of genetic and environmental factors, resulting in the clinical manifestation of the disease. So far in Italy, updated data about the prevalence and risk factors of respiratory and allergic diseases in preschool children are not available.
Methods: Children aged 3-5 years, attending four different nursery schools in an urban district of the city of Rome. A standardized questionnaire developed under the SIDRIA-2 protocol was administered to the parents of the children for the assessment of the potential risk factors and the outcomes.
Results: A total of 494 children were enrolled in the study; 289 of them (60.3%) performed a skin prick test (SPT). In the 12 months preceding the interviews, 15% of children experienced at least one episode of wheezing, 5.5% of allergic rhinitis, 11% of children had a doctor diagnosis of asthma, 12% of children who underwent the SPT were positive to at least one of the tested allergens, being diagnosed as atopic. The univariate analysis for the health outcomes of the study shows that asthma was positively associated with daycare attendance, mother's history of atopy, siblings' history of atopy, recurrent siblings' bronchitis, and dermatitis. Atopy was positively associated with mother's history of atopy and dermatitis, whereas there is a borderline protective association with recurrent siblings' bronchitis.
Conclusions: This study represents a first comprehensive epidemiological evaluation of prevalence of respiratory and allergic diseases in children aged 3-5 years in the city of Rome and an updating of the evolution of allergic diseases
Long-term follow-up of Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) in children and adolescents managed at a single institution over a 20-year period
Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) is rare in childhood. In our Institution we managed 30 consecutive Ph+CML patients aged <18 years, according to our adults’ guidelines. Patients with HLA-identical related donor (RD) underwent stem cell transplant (SCT). Since 1989, patients without RD were systematically treated with -interferon (IFN) (median dosage: 6 MU/day). Of 18/19 evaluable patients, 17 (94.5%) achieved haematologic response (HR), 11/17 (65%) cytogenetic response (CyR), complete (CCyR) in 4 (23.5%). Three patients remain in CCyR, 2 achieved BCR-ABL transcript disappearance. Of 13 patients without CCyR, 5 underwent SCT, 4 switched to STI571, 4 progressed. All patients receiving STI571 in chronic phase (CP) obtained sustained CCyR and 3 a persistent molecular response. 8-year survival among IFN-treated patients, censored or not for subsequent therapies, is 62% and 63%. Overall, 13/30 patients underwent SCT: 5 HLA-identical-RD, 5 matched unrelated donor, 2 mismatched-RD, 1 unrelated mismatched umbilical cord blood. Eight allotransplanted patients (6/6 in 1st CP) are in cytogenetic and molecular remission with 8-year survival of 61% from SCT and 69% from diagnosis.
In our 20-year experience, the use of IFN in children without matched RD led to prolonged cytogenetic and molecular responses and long-term survival, without impairing the outcome of subsequent SCT
A Step Into the Definition of the Seismic Risk for the City of Benevento (Italy)
This paper gives a contribution in the definition of the seismic hazard for the city of Benevento in Southern Italy, from a geotechnical engineering viewpoint. To pursue this goal, an extensive geotechnical characterization of the city subsoil was achieved collecting data available at the Department of Geotechnical Engineering, University of Napoli and Benevento municipal technical office. Attention was paid in defining strain dependent shear stiffness and damping ratio for the geomaterials present in the urban area. A new method to correct the Masing criteria was adopted. Numerical analyses were performed considering the subsoil as a continuous one-phase equivalent linear medium. The 1-D analyses were carried out using Shake-like codes. The seismic hazard in the city was evaluated on the basis of two seismic scenarios, respectively characterized by low and high acceleration levels. The final result of the work is a seismic zonation of the city of Benevento. It was found that zonation maps are largely dependent from the chosen seismic scenario

Trapped ion chain as a neural network
We demonstrate the possibility of realizing a neural network in a chain of
trapped ions with induced long range interactions. Such models permit to store
information distributed over the whole system. The storage capacity of such
network, which depends on the phonon spectrum of the system, can be controlled
by changing the external trapping potential and/or by applying longitudinal
local magnetic fields. The system properties suggest the possibility of
implementing robust distributed realizations of quantum logic.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Insights into the Structure of Dot@Rod and Dot@Octapod CdSe@CdS Heterostructures
CdSe@CdS dot@rods with diameter around 6 nm and length of either
20, 27, or 30 nm and dot@octapods with pod diameters of ?15 nm and lengths of ?50
nm were investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. These heterostructures are
prepared by seed-mediated routes, where the structure, composition, and morphology of
the CdSe nanocrystals used as a seed play key roles in directing the growth of the second
semiconducting domain. The local structural environment of all the elements in the
CdSe@CdS heterostructures was investigated at the Cd, S, and Se K-edges by taking
advantage of the selectivity of X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and was compared to pure
reference compounds. We found that the structural features of dot@rods are
independent of the size of the rods. These structures can be described as made of a
CdSe dot and a CdS rod, both in the wurtzite phase with a high crystallinity of both the
core and the rod. This result supports the effectiveness of high temperature colloidal
synthesis in promoting the formation of core@shell nanocrystals with very low
defectivity. On the other hand, data on the CdSe@CdS with octapod morphology suggest the occurrence of a core composed of
a CdSe cubic sphalerite phase with eight pods made of CdS wurtzite phase. Our findings are compared to current models
proposed for the design of functional heterostructures with controlled nanoarchitecture

Lipid-induced hepatocyte-derived extracellular vesicles regulate hepatic stellate cell via microRNAs targeting PPAR-γ.
Background&aimsHepatic stellate cells (HSCs) play a key role in liver fibrosis in various chronic liver disorders including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The development of liver fibrosis requires a phenotypic switch from quiescent to activated HSCs. The triggers for HSCs activation in NAFLD remain poorly understood. We investigated the role and molecular mechanism of extracellular vesicles (EVs) released by hepatocytes during lipotoxicity in modulation of HSC phenotype.MethodsEVs were isolated from fat-laden hepatocytes by differential centrifugation and incubated with HSCs. EV internalization and HSCs activation, migration and proliferation were assessed. Loss- and gain-of-functions studies were performed to explore the potential role of PPAR-γ-targeting miRNAs carried by EVs into HSC.ResultsHepatocyte-derived EVs released during lipotoxicity are efficiently internalized by HSCs resulting in their activation, as shown by marked up-regulation of pro-fibrogenic genes (Collagen-I, α-SMA and TIMP-2), proliferation, chemotaxis and wound healing responses. These changes were associated with miRNAs shuttled by EVs and suppression of PPAR-γ expression in HSC. Hepatocyte-derived EVs miRNA content included various miRNAs that are known inhibitors of PPAR-γ expression with miR-128-3p being the most effectively transferred. Furthermore loss- and gain-of-function studies identified miR-128-3p as a central modulator of the effects of EVs on PPAR-γ inhibition and HSC activation.ConclusionOur findings demonstrate a link between fat-laden hepatocyte-derived EVs and liver fibrosis and have potential implications for the development of novel anti-fibrotic targets for NAFLD and other fibrotic diseases
