Determination of biosorption mechanism in biomass of agave, using spectroscopic and microscopic techniques for the purification of contaminated water
[Abstract] Lead (Pb2+) and copper (Cu2+) are polluting metals due to their toxicity; however, the extraction of these metals is essential for economic development, so it is important to look for efficient and low-cost alternatives that can remove heavy metals from the various bodies of water. One of the alternatives used in this work is biosorption, for which an agroindustrial waste (epidermis from Agave atrovirens) was used to evaluate the affinity of removal of lead and copper in aqueous solutions; in addition, spectroscopy and microscopy techniques were used to elucidate and corroborate the removal and affinity capacity of the agave epidermis for both metals studied. The optimal pH value for the removal of both metals was 3. The adsorption isotherms yielded a qmax of 25.7 and 8.6 mg/g for lead and copper, respectively. Adjusting to the Langmuir-Freundlich model, the adsorption kinetics were pseudo-second order, and it was found that the equilibrium time was at 140 min. The spectroscopy and microscopy analyses corroborated the affinity between metals and functional groups of the agave, as well as with the elemental analysis, which reported 17.38% of lead and 4.25% of copper.[Resumen] El plomo (Pb2+) y el cobre (Cu2+) son metales contaminantes debido a su toxicidad; sin embargo, la extracción de estos metales es indispensable para el desarrollo económico, por lo que es importante buscar alternativas eficientes y de bajo costo que puedan remover metales pesados de los diversos cuerpos de agua. Una de las alternativas utilizadas en este trabajo es la biosorción, para la cual se utilizó un residuo agroindustrial (epidermis de Agave atrovirens), para evaluar la afinidad de remoción del plomo y cobre en soluciones acuosas; adicionalmente, se emplearon técnicas de espesctroscopía y microscopía que permitieron elucidar y corroborar la capacidad de remoción y afinidad que tuvo la epidermis de A. atrovirens para ambos metales estudiados. El valor óptimo de pH para la remoción de ambos metales fue 3. Las isotermas de adsorción arrojaron una qmax de 25.7 y 8.6 mg/g para el plomo y cobre, respectivamente. Ajustando al modelo de Langmuir-Freundlich, las cinéticas de adsorción resultaron de pseudo-segundo orden, se encontró que el tiempo de equilibrio es a los 140 min. Caracterización química y cuantificación del rendimiento de extracción de pigmento en siete accesiones mexicanas de Bixa orellana
Achiote (Bixa orellana) is a plant used for obtaining a natural dye rich on carotenoids (mainly bixin and norbixin); it is also the plant species with the highest content of tocotrienols in nature. In the present work, the pigment extraction yield of seven Mexican accessions of Bixa orellana was quantified. Also color parameters and content of tocotrienols, tocopherols, norbixin, bixin, total phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity were evaluated in the corresponding annatto extracts. The highest percentage of pigment extraction yield was obtained with KOH (4.84%). Accessions 43 (L*= 4.01 ± 0.79, C*= 7.33 ± 1.07, h= 25.76 ± 6.35) and 50 (L*= 3.17 ± 0.64, C*= 6.81 ± 0.53, h= 26.41 ± 4.41) had the lowest color values, meaning these accessions had a darker and redder color. Four accessions showed the highest content of bixin: accession 48 (3.1%), 45 (2.6%) 43 (2.4%) and 47 (2.2%). Accession 50 had showed the highest content of total phenolic compounds and of tocotrienols (T3), mainly the isoform δ-T3 (5.03 ± 0.64 mg g−1 Seed Dry Weight), as well as the highest antioxidant capacity.El achiote (Bixa orellana) es una planta utilizada para obtener un colorante natural rico en carotenoides (principalmente bixina y norbixina); además, es la especie vegetal con el mayor contenido de tocotrienoles. En este trabajo, se determinó el rendimiento de extracción de pigmento de siete accesiones mexicanas de Bixa orellana. También se evaluaron los parámetros de color y el contenido de tocotrienoles, tocoferoles, norbixina, bixina, compuestos fenólicos totales y la capacidad antioxidante en extractos de annato. El mayor porcentaje de rendimiento de extracción de pigmento fue obtenido con KOH (4.847905%). Las accesiones 43 (L*= 4.01 ± 0.79, C*= 7.33 ± 1.07, h= 25.76 ± 6.35) y 50 (L*= 3.17 ± 0.64, C*= 6.81 ± 0.53, h= 26.41 ± 4.41) presentaron los valores más bajos de los párametros de color, lo que significa que estas accesiones tuvieron un color más oscuro y más rojo. Cuatro accesiones mostraron el mayor contenido de bixina: accesión 48 (3.1%), 45 (2.6%) 43 (2.4%) and 47 (2.2%). La accession 50 mostró el mayor contenido de compuestos fenólicos totales y de tocotrienoles (T3), principalmente la isoforma δ-T3 (5.03 ± 0.64 mg g-1 Peso Seco), así como también la mayor capacidad antioxidante.Fil: Raddatz Mota, D.. The Source of Three-minute Magneto-acoustic Oscillations in Coronal Fans
We use images of high spatial, spectral and temporal resolution, obtained
using both ground- and space-based instrumentation, to investigate the coupling
between wave phenomena observed at numerous heights in the solar atmosphere.
Intensity oscillations of 3 minutes are observed to encompass photospheric
umbral dot structures, with power at least three orders-of-magnitude higher
than the surrounding umbra. Simultaneous chromospheric velocity and intensity
time series reveal an 87 \pm 8 degree out-of-phase behavior, implying the
presence of standing modes created as a result of partial wave reflection at
the transition region boundary. An average blue-shifted Doppler velocity of
~1.5 km/s, in addition to a time lag between photospheric and chromospheric
oscillatory phenomena, confirms the presence of upwardly-propagating slow-mode
waves in the lower solar atmosphere. Propagating oscillations in EUV intensity
are detected in simultaneous coronal fan structures, with a periodicity of 172
\pm 17 s and a propagation velocity of 45 \pm 7 km/s. Numerical simulations
reveal that the damping of the magneto-acoustic wave trains is dominated by
thermal conduction. The coronal fans are seen to anchor into the photosphere in
locations where large-amplitude umbral dot oscillations manifest. Derived
kinetic temperature and emission measure time-series display prominent
out-of-phase characteristics, and when combined with the previously established
sub-sonic wave speeds, we conclude that the observed EUV waves are the coronal
counterparts of the upwardly-propagating magneto-acoustic slow-modes detected
in the lower solar atmosphere. Thus, for the first time, we reveal how the
propagation of 3 minute magneto-acoustic waves in solar coronal structures is a
direct result of amplitude enhancements occurring in photospheric umbral dots.Comment: Accepted into ApJ (13 pages and 10 figures
IMF - metallicity: a tight local relation revealed by the CALIFA survey
Variations in the stellar initial mass function (IMF) have been invoked to
explain the spectroscopic and dynamical properties of early-type galaxies.
However, no observations have yet been able to disentangle the physical driver.
We analyse here a sample of 24 early-type galaxies drawn from the CALIFA
survey, deriving in a homogeneous way their stellar population and kinematic
properties. We find that the local IMF is tightly related to the local
metallicity, becoming more bottom-heavy towards metal-rich populations. Our
result, combined with the galaxy mass-metallicity relation, naturally explains
previous claims of a galaxy mass-IMF relation, derived from non-IFU spectra. If
we assume that - within the star formation environment of early-type galaxies -
metallicity is the main driver of IMF variations, a significant revision of the

A massively parallel framework using P systems and GPUs
Since CUDA programing model appeared on the
general purpose computations, the developers can extract all
the power contained in GPUs (Graphics Processing Unit) across
many computational domains. Among these domains, P systems
or membrane systems provide a high level computational modeling
framework that allows, in theory, to obtain polynomial
time solutions to NP-complete problems by trading time for
space, and also to model biological phenomena in the area of
computational systems biology. P systems are massively parallel
distributed devices and their computation can be divided in two
levels of parallelism: membranes, that can be expressed as blocks
in CUDA programming model; and objects, that can be expressed
as threads in CUDA programming model. In this paper, we
present our initial ideas of developing a simulator for the class of
recognizer P systems with active membranes by using the CUDA
programing model to exploit the massively parallel nature of
those systems at maximum. Experimental results of a preliminary
version of our simulator on a Tesla C1060 GPU show a 60X of

Simulation of P systems with active membranes on CUDA
P systems or Membrane Systems provide a high-level computational modelling framework that
combines the structure and dynamic aspects of biological systems in a relevant and understandable way.
They are inherently parallel and non-deterministic computing devices. In this article, we discuss the
motivation, design principles and key of the implementation of a simulator for the class of recognizer P
systems with active membranes running on a (GPU). We compare our parallel simulator for GPUs to the
simulator developed for a single central processing unit (CPU), showing that GPUs are better suited than

Studies on the clinical significance of nonesterified and total cholesterol in urine
Gas-liquid chromatographic determinations of nonesterified and total urinary cholesterol were performed in 137 normals, 264 patients with various internal diseases without evidence of neoplasias or diseases of the kidney or urinary tract, 497 patients with malignancies and 236 patients with diseases of the kidney, urinary tract infections or prostatic adenoma with residual urine. A normal range (mean±2 SD) of 0.2–2.2 mg/24 hours nonesterified cholesterol (NEC) and of 0.3–3.0 mg/24 hours total cholesterol (TC) was calculated.
Values of urinary cholesterol excretion were independent of age and sex and did not correlate with cholesterol levels in plasma. Patients with various internal diseases, without evidence of neoplasias nor diseases of the kidney or obstruction of the urinary tract, showed normal urinary cholesterol excretions, as did patients with infections of the urinary tract.
However, elevated urinary cholesterol was found in patients with diseases of the kidney or urinary tract obstruction (prostatic adenoma with residual urine), malignant diseases of the urogenital tract and metastasing carcinoma of the breast. In patients with other malignant diseases urinary cholesterol was usually normal.
Lesions of the urothelial cell membranes are considered to be the most likely cause of urinary cholesterol hyperexcretion. The clinical value of urinary cholesterol determinations as a possible screening test for urogenital carcinomas in unselected populations is limited by lacking specificity, expensive methodology and low prevalence of the mentioned carcinomas, although elevated urinary cholesterol excretions have been observed in early clinical stages of urogenital cancers
Simulation of Recognizer P Systems by Using Manycore GPUs
Software development for cellular computing is growing up yielding new
applications. In this paper, we describe a simulator for the class of recognizer P systems
with active membranes, which exploits the massively parallel nature of the P systems
computations by using a massively parallel computer architecture, such as Compute
Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) from Nvidia, to obtain better performance in the

Imprints of galaxy evolution on H ii regions Memory of the past uncovered by the CALIFA survey
H ii regions in galaxies are the sites of star formation and thus particular
places to understand the build-up of stellar mass in the universe. The line
ratios of this ionized gas are frequently used to characterize the ionization
conditions. We use the Hii regions catalogue from the CALIFA survey (~5000 H ii
regions), to explore their distribution across the classical [OIII]/Hbeta vs.
[NII]/Halpha diagnostic diagram, and how it depends on the oxygen abundance,
ionization parameter, electron density, and dust attenuation. We compared the
line ratios with predictions from photoionization models. Finally, we explore
the dependences on the properties of the host galaxies, the location within
those galaxies and the properties of the underlying stellar population. We
found that the location within the BPT diagrams is not totally predicted by
photoionization models. Indeed, it depends on the properties of the host
galaxies, their galactocentric distances and the properties of the underlying
stellar population. These results indicate that although H ii regions are short
lived events, they are affected by the total underlying stellar population. One
may say that H ii regions keep a memory of the stellar evolution and chemical
enrichment that have left an imprint on the both the ionizing stellar
