Observation of Magnetic Supercooling of the Transition to the Vortex State
We demonstrate that the transition from the high-field state to the vortex
state in a nanomagnetic disk shows the magnetic equivalent of supercooling.
This is evidence that this magnetic transition can be described in terms of a
modified Landau first-order phase transition. To accomplish this we have
measured the bulk magnetization of single magnetic disks using nanomechanical
torsional resonator torque magnetometry. This allows observation of single
vortex creation events without averaging over an array of disks or over

Harmonics generation in electron-ion collisions in a short laser pulse
Anomalously high generation efficiency of coherent higher field-harmonics in
collisions between {\em oppositely charged particles} in the field of
femtosecond lasers is predicted. This is based on rigorous numerical solutions
of a quantum kinetic equation for dense laser plasmas which overcomes

Phase transitions and configuration space topology
Equilibrium phase transitions may be defined as nonanalytic points of
thermodynamic functions, e.g., of the canonical free energy. Given a certain
physical system, it is of interest to understand which properties of the system
account for the presence of a phase transition, and an understanding of these
properties may lead to a deeper understanding of the physical phenomenon. One
possible approach of this issue, reviewed and discussed in the present paper,
is the study of topology changes in configuration space which, remarkably, are
found to be related to equilibrium phase transitions in classical statistical
mechanical systems. For the study of configuration space topology, one
considers the subsets M_v, consisting of all points from configuration space
with a potential energy per particle equal to or less than a given v. For
finite systems, topology changes of M_v are intimately related to nonanalytic
points of the microcanonical entropy (which, as a surprise to many, do exist).
In the thermodynamic limit, a more complex relation between nonanalytic points
of thermodynamic functions (i.e., phase transitions) and topology changes is
observed. For some class of short-range systems, a topology change of the M_v
at v=v_t was proved to be necessary for a phase transition to take place at a
potential energy v_t. In contrast, phase transitions in systems with long-range
interactions or in systems with non-confining potentials need not be
accompanied by such a topology change. Instead, for such systems the
nonanalytic point in a thermodynamic function is found to have some
maximization procedure at its origin. These results may foster insight into the
mechanisms which lead to the occurrence of a phase transition, and thus may
help to explore the origin of this physical phenomenon.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure

A phase II study of temozolomide vs. procarbazine in patients with glioblastoma multiforme at first relapse.
A randomized, multicentre, open-label, phase II study compared temozolomide (TMZ), an oral second-generation alkylating agent, and procarbazine (PCB) in 225 patients with glioblastoma multiforme at first relapse. Primary objectives were to determine progression-free survival (PFS) at 6 months and safety for TMZ and PCB in adult patients who failed conventional treatment. Secondary objectives were to assess overall survival and health-related quality of life (HRQL). TMZ was given orally at 200 mg/m(2)/day or 150 mg/m(2)/day (prior chemotherapy) for 5 days, repeated every 28 days. PCB was given orally at 150 mg/m(2)/day or 125 mg/m(2)/day (prior chemotherapy) for 28 days, repeated every 56 days. HRQL was assessed using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30 [+3]) and the Brain Cancer Module 20 (BCM20). The 6-month PFS rate for patients who received TMZ was 21%, which met the protocol objective. The 6-month PFS rate for those who received PCB was 8% (P = 0.008, for the comparison). Overall PFS significantly improved with TMZ, with a median PFS of 12.4 weeks in the TMZ group and 8.32 weeks in the PCB group (P = 0.0063). The 6-month overall survival rate for TMZ patients was 60% vs. 44% for PCB patients (P = 0.019). Freedom from disease progression was associated with maintenance of HRQL, regardless of treatment received. TMZ had an acceptable safety profile; most adverse events were mild or moderate in severity
Beidseitige Informationsasymmetrien in der Arzt-Patient-Beziehung: Implikationen für die GKV
Die vorliegende Arbeit analysiert die Interdependenzen und Informationsstrukturen im Gesundheitswesen. Hauptansatzpunkt ist die beidseitig asymmetrische Information zwischen Arzt und Patient. Der Patient kann i. d. R. weder die Wirkung der Leistungen des Arztes genau einordnen, noch besitzt der Arzt genauere Informationen über das behandlungsbegleitende Verhalten des Patienten. Die Interdependenzen zwischen diesen Handlungen bestimmen das resultierende Gleichgewicht. Die Einführung einer Selbstbeteiligung für den Patienten führt zu einer verbesserten Compliance, das Niveau der medizinischen Leistung hängt von den Interdependenzen ab. Die Implikationen, die sich aus dem Modell ergeben, lassen auf ein Kommunikationsdefizit zwischen Arzt und Patient schließen. Eine Stärkung der Compliance ist zum einen durch verbesserte Information des Arztes, zum anderen durch finanzielle Anreize, insbesondere durch die Einführung einer Selbstbeteiligung, möglich. Die Krankenkassen als ergänzender Sachwalter der Patienten können in der Arzt-Patient-Beziehung vor allem Aufgaben wie Vertragsabschlüsse übernehmen, benötigen dazu jedoch mehr Gestaltungsfreiheit
Enhanced inverse bremsstrahlung heating rates in a strong laser field
Test particle studies of electron scattering on ions, in an oscillatory
electromagnetic field have shown that standard theoretical assumptions of small
angle collisions and phase independent orbits are incorrect for electron
trajectories with drift velocities smaller than quiver velocity amplitude. This
leads to significant enhancement of the electron energy gain and the inverse
bremsstrahlung heating rate in strong laser fields. Nonlinear processes such as
Coulomb focusing and correlated collisions of electrons being brought back to
the same ion by the oscillatory field are responsible for large angle, head-on
scattering processes. The statistical importance of these trajectories has been
examined for mono-energetic beam-like, Maxwellian and highly anisotropic
electron distribution functions. A new scaling of the inverse bremsstrahlung
heating rate with drift velocity and laser intensity is discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figure
Pontryagin invariants and integral formulas for Milnor's triple linking number
To each three-component link in the 3-sphere, we associate a geometrically
natural characteristic map from the 3-torus to the 2-sphere, and show that the
pairwise linking numbers and Milnor triple linking number that classify the
link up to link homotopy correspond to the Pontryagin invariants that classify
its characteristic map up to homotopy. This can be viewed as a natural
extension of the familiar fact that the linking number of a two-component link
in 3-space is the degree of its associated Gauss map from the 2-torus to the
2-sphere. When the pairwise linking numbers are all zero, we give an integral
formula for the triple linking number analogous to the Gauss integral for the
pairwise linking numbers. The integrand in this formula is geometrically
natural in the sense that it is invariant under orientation-preserving rigid
motions of the 3-sphere, while the integral itself can be viewed as the
helicity of a related vector field on the 3-torus.Comment: 60 pages, 37 figure
Treg depletion potentiates checkpoint inhibition in claudin-low breast cancer
Claudin-low breast cancer is an aggressive subtype that confers poor prognosis and is found largely within the clinical triple-negative group of breast cancer patients. Here, we have shown that intrinsic and immune cell gene signatures distinguish the claudin-low subtype clinically as well as in mouse models of other breast cancer subtypes. Despite adaptive immune cell infiltration in claudin-low tumors, treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitory antibodies against cytotoxic T lymphocyte–associated protein 4 (CTLA-4) and programmed death receptor 1 (PD-1) were ineffective in controlling tumor growth. CD4+FoxP3+ Tregs represented a large proportion of the tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in claudin-low tumors, and Tregs isolated from tumor-bearing mice were able to suppress effector T cell responses. Tregs in the tumor microenvironment highly expressed PD-1 and were recruited partly through tumor generation of the chemokine CXCL12. Antitumor efficacy required stringent Treg depletion combined with checkpoint inhibition; delays in tumor growth were not observed using therapies that modestly diminished the number of Tregs in the tumor microenvironment. This study provides evidence that the recruitment of Tregs to the tumor microenvironment inhibits an effective antitumor immune response and highlights early Treg recruitment as a possible mechanism for the lack of response to immune checkpoint blockade antibodies in specific subtypes of cancer that are heavily infiltrated with adaptive immune cells
A 1500 deg2 near infrared proper motion catalogue from the UKIDSS Large Area Survey
The United Kingdom Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS) began in 2005, with the start of the UKIDSS programme as a 7 year effort to survey roughly 4000 deg2 at high Galactic latitudes in Y, J, H and K bands. The survey also included a significant quantity of two epoch J band observations, with an epoch baseline greater than 2 years to calculate proper motions. We present a near-infrared proper motion catalogue for the 1500 deg2 of the two epoch LAS data, which includes 135 625 stellar sources and a further 88 324 with ambiguous morphological classifications, all with motions detected above the 5σ level. We developed a custom proper motion pipeline which we describe here. Our catalogue agrees well with the proper motion data supplied for a 300 deg2 subset in the current Wide Field Camera Science Archive (WSA) 10th data release (DR10) catalogue, and in various optical catalogues, but it benefits from a larger matching radius and hence a larger upper proper motion detection limit. We provide absolute proper motions, using LAS galaxies for the relative to absolute correction. By using local second-order polynomial transformations, as opposed to linear transformations in the WSA, we correct better for any local distortions in the focal plane, not including the radial distortion that is removed by the UKIDSS pipeline. We present the results of proper motion searches for new brown dwarfs and white dwarfs. We discuss 41 sources in the WSA DR10 overlap with our catalogue with proper motions >300 mas yr−1, several of which are new detections. We present 15 new candidate ultracool dwarf binary systems
