Experimental estimation of the dimension of classical and quantum systems
An overwhelming majority of experiments in classical and quantum physics make
a priori assumptions about the dimension of the system under consideration.
However, would it be possible to assess the dimension of a completely unknown
system only from the results of measurements performed on it, without any extra
assumption? The concept of a dimension witness answers this question, as it
allows one to bound the dimension of an unknown classical or quantum system in
a device-independent manner, that is, only from the statistics of measurements
performed on it. Here, we report on the experimental demonstration of dimension
witnesses in a prepare and measure scenario. We use pairs of photons entangled
in both polarization and orbital angular momentum to generate ensembles of
classical and quantum states of dimensions up to 4. We then use a dimension
witness to certify their dimensionality as well as their quantum nature. Our
results open new avenues for the device-independent estimation of unknown

Quantum Conductance in Semimetallic Bismuth Nanocontacts
Electronic transport properties of bismuth nanocontacts are analyzed by means
of a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The subquantum steps
observed in the conductance versus elongation curves give evidence of atomic
rearrangements in the contact. The underlying quantum nature of the conductance
reveals itself through peaks in the conductance histograms. The shape of the
conductance curves at 77 K is well described by a simple gliding mechanism for
the contact evolution during elongation. The strikingly different behaviour at
4 K suggests a charge carrier transition from light to heavy ones as the

We give an introduction to several regularization schemes that deal with
ultraviolet and infrared singularities appearing in higher-order computations
in quantum field theories. Comparing the computation of simple quantities in

A regional database management system—the fisheries resource information system and tools (FiRST): Its design, utility and future directions
South and Southeast Asian countries have undertaken demersal trawl surveys to measure the fisheries potential of their waters throughout the 20th century. However, ensuring full use of, and easy access to the resulting data is a challenge in developing countries. The “Fisheries Resource Information System and Tools” (FiRST) was developed through a regional collaborative effort across eight South and Southeast Asian counties to meet these needs. FiRST is a data management system for scientific trawl survey data and includes data summary and visualization tools, an analytical routine to estimate biomass, and data import/export modules. The FiRST software has also facilitated the establishment of a regional database, ‘Trawl Base’, which contains more than 20,000 hauls or stations from scientific trawl surveys in 10 countries conducted between 1926 and 1995. The regional database is an important regional resource for coastal fisheries management complementing national fisheries catch statistics
