The expression of chemokines (CCL-2 and CXCL-8) and cytokines (IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-10) was evaluated by RT-qPCR in colostrum-deprived pigs vaccinated and challenged with Haemophilus parasuis serovar 5. Two vaccines containing native proteins with affinity to porcine transferrin (NPAPTim and NPAPTit) were tested, along with two control groups: one inoculated with PBS instead of antigen (challenge group (CHG)), and another one nonimmunized and noninfected (blank group). The use of NPAPTim and NPAPTit resulted in complete protection against H. parasuis (no clinical signs and/or lesions), and both vaccines were capable of avoiding the expression of the proinflammatory molecules to levels similar to physiological values in blank group. However, overexpression of all proinflammatory molecules was observed in CHG group, mainly in the target infection tissues (brain, lungs, and spleen). High expression of CCL-2, CXCL-8, IL-1α, IL-1β, and IL-6 can be considered one of the characteristics of H. parasuis infection by serovar 5

Development of a monitoring system for COVID-19 monitoring in early stages

Covid-19 is considered the most infectious virus today. Likewise, the struggle to mitigate the effects of the variants, the flexibility in some measures such as the use of face masks, the advancement of vaccination and prevention and self-care campaigns continue to be topics of research and of global interest. The world health authorities published that the disease was characterized by presenting the same symptoms as the flu along with a complex picture where in the most serious cases they lead to difficulty breathing due to pneumonia, sepsis and septic shock that can lead to death. Some systems implemented for taking body temperature such as thermographic cameras, digital thermometers, for the description of symptoms in the people they analyze at the time of carrying out the epidemiological fences are not enough, since they handle low precision, are taken in isolation, individually or randomly and is not suitable for characterizing interest groups. Then, establishing risk levels by measuring non-invasive variables can be considered inputs into prevention campaigns and a low-cost way of monitoring the community. This article shows the design of a non-invasive embedded device for the measurement of 5 priority variables for the detection of the risk of covid-19 infection. The proposed device was duly calibrated and synchronized for the acquisition of data from 594 people in the city of Bucaramanga, Colombia, who authorize the monitoring of the symptoms. The people must be in a state of rest to be able to acquire the data with great accuracy, in this way the data is entered into the system in charge of doing the monitoring analysis. Additionally, the implementation of an interface that allows the visualization of results, laying the foundations for the development of automatic learning techniques or models for the risk classification in future work

A Far-UV Variability Survey of the Globular Cluster M80

We have searched for variable sources in the core region of M80, using far ultra-violet data taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope. We found three sources that exhibit strong signs of variability in our data. Among these is source TDK1, which we believe to be an RR Lyrae star that reached maximum brightness during our observations. The light curve shows a >3 mag FUV brightening over the course of ~5 hours, with an estimated peak brightness of ~16.7 mag, followed by a decrease to ~20 mag. Archival optical data obtained with WFPC2 confirm that TDK1 is variable in all wavebands. TDK1's SED is reasonably fit by a star with temperature T(eff)=6700K and radius R=4.2R(sun), consistent with the suggestion that it is an RR Lyrae. Based on the photometric and variability characteristics of the other two variables, we suggest that TDK2 is likely to be an SX Phoenicis star with ~55 minutes period, and TDK3 is likely another RR Lyrae. Finally, we briefly discuss the FUV counterparts to two previously known variables in M80, the classical nova T Sco and the dwarf nova DN1.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures and 3 tables. Polyphosphate degradation by Nudt3-Zn²⁺ mediates oxidative stress response

Polyphosphate (polyP) is a polymer of hundreds of phosphate residues present in all organisms. In mammals, polyP is involved in crucial physiological processes, including coagulation, inflammation, and stress response. However, after decades of research, the metabolic enzymes are still unknown. Here, we purify and identify Nudt3, a NUDIX family member, as the enzyme responsible for polyP phosphatase activity in mammalian cells. We show that Nudt3 shifts its substrate specificity depending on the cation; specifically, Nudt3 is active on polyP when Zn2+ is present. Nudt3 has in vivo polyP phosphatase activity in human cells, and importantly, we show that cells with altered polyP levels by modifying Nudt3 protein amount present reduced viability upon oxidative stress and increased DNA damage, suggesting that polyP and Nudt3 play a role in oxidative stress protection. Finally, we show that Nudt3 is involved in the early stages of embryo development in zebrafish
