    Neutrino masses and mixings in SO(10)

    Assuming a Zee-like matrix for the right-handed neutrino Majorana masses in the see-saw mechanism, one gets maximal mixing for vacuum solar oscillations, a very small value for Ue3U_{e3} and an approximate degeneracy for the two lower neutrino masses. The scale of right-handed neutrino Majorana masses is in good agreement with the value expected in a SO(10) model with Pati-Salam SU(4)\ts SU(2)\ts SU(2) intermediate symmetry.Comment: 11 pages, no figures.     Ultrasound and multidetector computed tomography of mandibular salivary gland adenocarcinoma in two dogs

    Malignant tumors of the salivary glands are rare in dogs, with adenocarcinoma being the most represented. Parotid and mandibular glands are most commonly affected in dogs. Because of local invasivity and high metastatic potential, preoperative imaging evaluation of mandibular region and tumoral staging is essential along with biopsy sampling. The present manuscript describes the ultrasound and computed tomographic imaging findings of mandibular gland adenocarcinoma in two dogs and discusses their clinical utility.Keywords: Computed tomography, Dog, Salivary gland tumor, Ultrasound

    Dispersion of longitudinal momentum distributions induced in fragmentation reactions

    On the basis of systematic measurements of fragmentation reactions, which provide a detailed overview on the velocity distributions of residual nuclei, an improved description of the kinematical properties of the fragmentation residues is established. This work is dedicated to the fluctuations of their momentum distributions. In contrast to previous investigations, limited to close-to-projectile fragments, we extended our study to the entire production range, down to the lightest observed fragments. In this context, beside the contribution of abrasion and evaporation processes, we considered the effect of the thermal break-up on the width of the momentum distributions. Using approximated theoretical descriptions of the different reaction stages, a new analytical formula for the variance of the momentum distribution is derived, which is well adapted to technical applications.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, background info. at http://www-wnt.gsi.de/charms

    Modulation of the glyoxalase system in the aging model Podospora anserina : effects on growth and lifespan

    The eukaryotic glyoxalase system consists of two enzymatic components, glyoxalase I (lactoylglutathionelyase) and glyoxalase II (hydroxyacylglutathione hydrolase). These enzymes are dedicated to the removal of toxic alpha-oxoaldehydes like methylglyoxal (MG). MG is formed as a by-product of glycolysis and MG toxicity results from its damaging capability leading to modifications of proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. An efficient removal of MG appears to be essential to ensure cellular functionality and viability. Here we study the effects of the genetic modulation of genes encoding the components of the glyoxalase system in the filamentous ascomycete and aging model Podospora anserina. Overexpression of PaGlo1 leads to a lifespan reduction on glucose rich medium, probably due to depletion of reduced glutathione. Deletion of PaGlo1 leads to hypersensitivity against MG added to the growth medium. A beneficial effect on lifespan is observed when both PaGlo1 and PaGlo2 are overexpressed and the corresponding strains are grown on media containing increased glucose concentrations. Notably, the double mutant has a ‘healthy’ phenotype without physiological impairments. Moreover, PaGlo1/PaGlo2_OEx strains are not long-lived on media containing standard glucose concentrations suggesting a tight correlation between the efficiency and capacity to remove MG within the cell, the level of available glucose and lifespan. Overall, our results identify the up-regulation of both components of the glyoxalase system as an effective intervention to increase lifespan in P. anserina.     Key factors affecting the compressive strength of foamed concrete

    This contribution aims to highlight, from an experimental point of view, the key factors affecting the compressive strength of foamed concrete. An experimental campaign has been conducted on a broad group of cubic specimens made of foamed concrete under compression tests at 28 days. In addition to the obvious influence of the density on the achievement of the compressive strength, other factors have been studied. In particular, three different curing conditions, three foaming agents with either synthetic or protein nature, two different cement types, and three water/cement ratios have been included in this experimental investigation. As a result of this experimental campaign, it has been found that the not only the density, but also the foaming agent and the water/cement ratio play a major role in the strength achievement of the foamed concrete. It is also demonstrated that the combination of the foaming agent with a particular water/cement ratio is a crucial parameter affecting the compressive strength of this material

    Abstract In the field of stability of structures under nonconservative loads, the concept of follower force has long been debated by scientists due to the lack of actual experimental evidence. Bigoni and Noselli's work [2] aimed to investigate flutter and divergence instability phenomena through a purely mechanical model with Coulomb friction represents a praiseworthy attempt to shed light on this issue. A two-degree-of-freedom (DOF) system, conceived as a variant of the Ziegler column, was set up experimentally. The follower load was induced by a frictional force acting on a wheel mounted at the column end, so that the rolling friction vanishes and the sliding frictional force keeps always coaxial to the column, thus representing a tangential follower force. Along this research line, in this contribution a model is elaborated that stems from the analysis of an elastically supported rigid plate that represents the behaviour of a bridge deck suspended on springs and subjected to a wind-induced force. The wind force has been simulated by a Coulomb friction force acting on a wheel mounted on the plate aerodynamic centre, so that the sliding friction force keeps perpendicular to the plate axis throughout the system motion, thus representing a follower force. To properly reproduce the wind force, the friction force is applied to the wheel by a lever mechanism wherein one of the two lever arms involves the plate rotation via a particular circular guide. The corresponding equations of motion of the bridge deck are derived in a completely dimensionless form. Depending on the mechanical characteristics of the plate and the magnitude of the friction force, stability, flutter or divergence phenomena may occur. The occurrence of these phenomena is numerically investigated by integration of the equations of motion. The development of an experimental framework of the model to corroborate these intuitions is the object of an ongoing research

    Auto and crosscorrelograms for the spike response of LIF neurons with slow synapses

    An analytical description of the response properties of simple but realistic neuron models in the presence of noise is still lacking. We determine completely up to the second order the firing statistics of a single and a pair of leaky integrate-and-fire neurons (LIFs) receiving some common slowly filtered white noise. In particular, the auto- and cross-correlation functions of the output spike trains of pairs of cells are obtained from an improvement of the adiabatic approximation introduced in \cite{Mor+04}. These two functions define the firing variability and firing synchronization between neurons, and are of much importance for understanding neuron communication.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Sign-changing tower of bubbles for a sinh-Poisson equation with asymmetric exponents

    Motivated by the statistical mechanics description of stationary 2D-turbulence, for a sinh-Poisson type equation with asymmetric nonlinearity, we construct a concentrating solution sequence in the form of a tower of singular Liouville bubbles, each of which has a different degeneracy exponent. The asymmetry parameter γ(0,1]\gamma\in(0,1] corresponds to the ratio between the intensity of the negatively rotating vortices and the intensity of the positively rotating vortices. Our solutions correspond to a superposition of highly concentrated vortex configurations of alternating orientation; they extend in a nontrivial way some known results for γ=1\gamma=1. Thus, by analyzing the case γ1\gamma\neq1 we emphasize specific properties of the physically relevant parameter γ\gamma in the vortex concentration phenomena

    Giant enchondroma recurrence of the proximal phalanx of the fifth finger: A case report

    Enchondroma (EC) is a benign and cartilage-forming tumor that causes intramedullary lesions. Moreover, EC is the most common bone tumor in the phalanges and metacarpal bones of the hand, deforming the structure and causing pain and functional limitation. The management of this neoplasia is the surgical treatment and the approach that is well-accepted consists in the curettage followed by the void augmentation with biological or synthetic fillers. The results from surgery are usually good and the recurrence rate is low (2-15%). In this article we report a case of EC recurrence of the proximal phalanx of the fifth finger of the hand after curettage and grafting. The patient was treated with the amputation of the fifth ray according to the Tsuge technique, obtaining a satisfying clinical result
