Communication in networks with hierarchical branching
We present a simple model of communication in networks with hierarchical
branching. We analyze the behavior of the model from the viewpoint of critical
systems under different situations. For certain values of the parameters, a
continuous phase transition between a sparse and a congested regime is observed
and accurately described by an order parameter and the power spectra. At the
critical point the behavior of the model is totally independent of the number
of hierarchical levels. Also scaling properties are observed when the size of
the system varies. The presence of noise in the communication is shown to break
the transition. Despite the simplicity of the model, the analytical results are
a useful guide to forecast the main features of real networks.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Final version accepted in PR
The Japanese model in retrospective : industrial strategies, corporate Japan and the 'hollowing out' of Japanese industry
This article provides a retrospective look at the Japanese model of industrial development. This model combined an institutional approach to production based around the Japanese Firm (Aoki's, J-mode) and strategic state intervention in industry by the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). For a long period, the alignment of state and corporate interests appeared to match the wider public interest as the Japanese economy prospered. However, since the early 1990s, the global ambitions of the corporate sector have contributed to a significant 'hollowing out' of Japan's industrial base. As the world today looks for a new direction in economic management, we suggest the Japanese model provides policy-makers with a salutary lesson in tying the wider public interest with those of the corporate sector

The confidence cult(ure)
In this paper we explore how confidence has become a technology of self that invites girls and women to work on themselves. The discussion demonstrates the extensiveness of what we call the ‘cult(ure) of confidence’ across different areas of social life, and examines the continuities in the way that exponents of the confidence cult(ure) name, diagnose and propose solutions to archetypal feminist questions about labour, value and the body. Our analysis focuses on two broad areas of social life in which the notion of confidence has taken hold powerfully in the last few years: popular discussions about gender and work, and consumer body culture. Examining the incitements to self-confidence in these realms, we show how an emergent technology of confidence, systematically re-signifies feminist accounts, by turning away from structural inequalities and collectivist critiques of male domination into heightened modes of self-work and self-regulation, and by repudiating the injuries inflicted by the structures of inequality. We conclude by situating the ‘confidence cult(ure)’ in relation to wider debates about feminism, postfeminism and neoliberalism

Culture and Subjectivity in Neoliberal and postfeminist times
My aim in this paper is to think through a number of issues concerning the relationship between culture and subjectivity. It seems to me that exploring the relationship of changing forms of political organisation, social relations and cultural practices to changing modes and experiences of subjecthood and subjectivity are among the most important and urgent tasks for critical intellectual work. These questions go to the heart of understanding power, ideology and agency and they require research that is interdisciplinary, psychosocial and intersectional. My particular focus in this short article is on the interrelations between changing representational practices in visual culture and changing subjectivity/ies. I argue that neoliberalism and postfeminism are central to understanding contemporary media culture, and I put the case for research which does not retreat from exploring how these broader social/political/economic/cultural discourses and formations may relate to subjectivity
The Effect of Bankruptcy Laws on the Valuation of Risky Consumer Debt
In a market setting with perfect information, a consumer recognizes that he can influence the state-contingent returns, and hence the pric, of his risky debt by the decision variables that determine the collateral and promised payments. Universal features in the growth dynamics of complex organizations
We analyze the fluctuations in the gross domestic product (GDP) of 152
countries for the period 1950--1992. We find that (i) the distribution of
annual growth rates for countries of a given GDP decays with ``fatter'' tails
than for a Gaussian, and (ii) the width of the distribution scales as a power
law of GDP with a scaling exponent . Both findings are in
surprising agreement with results on firm growth. These results are consistent
with the hypothesis that the evolution of organizations with complex structure

This paper shows how Script Analysis can produce new marketing theory by applying it to
contemporary shopping behaviour via British novelist Madeleine Wickham’s novel,
Confessions of a Shopaholic. We show how Becky Bloomwood, the central character, is a
Scripted Shopaholic for whom shopping is the activity around which everything else in her
live falls in and out of place. In presenting a Scripted Shopaholic Racket System, we theorise:
how shopping is used to structure time and relationships with others; the role of injunctions
and attributions and related discounting in fulfilling shopping scripts; and, the possibility of
freedom from excessive shopping scripts. We therefore bring together psychoanalysis, literary
texts, and shopping theories to generate new insights about why people shop (and often shop
too much), and how such behaviours might be transforme
Incomplete financial markets and jumps in asset prices
For incomplete financial markets, jumps in both prices and consumption can be unavoidable. We consider pure-exchange economies with infinite horizon, discrete time, uncertainty with a continuum of possible shocks at every date. The evolution of shocks follows a Markov process, and fundamentals depend continuously on shocks. It is shown that: (1) equilibria exist; (2) for effectively complete financial markets, asset prices depend continuously on shocks; and (3) for incomplete financial markets, there is an open set of economies U such that for every equilibrium of every economy in U, asset prices at every date depend discontinuously on the shock at that date
Nigellissima: A Study of Glamour, Performativity and Embodiment
This is a study of glamour, its complexities and its relationship with and role within celebrity culture. We explore glamour in the context of Nigella, the London-born TV cook, food writer and self-proclaimed ‘domestic goddess’ of British culinary culture. In our study we consider the interconnections between glamour, specifically Italian-style retro-glamour, and performativity in Nigella’s career. We also address the role of embodiment and authenticity in the masquerade of femininity. Our analysis focuses on Nigella’s glamour over time, considering its creation, enactment and reaffirmation following scandal. We conclude by speculating on glamour’s complex and ambivalent relationship with celebrity culture, and the role of vulnerability in creating authentic and enduring glamour in contemporary consumer society
