A comprehensive overview of radioguided surgery using gamma detection probe technology

The concept of radioguided surgery, which was first developed some 60 years ago, involves the use of a radiation detection probe system for the intraoperative detection of radionuclides. The use of gamma detection probe technology in radioguided surgery has tremendously expanded and has evolved into what is now considered an established discipline within the practice of surgery, revolutionizing the surgical management of many malignancies, including breast cancer, melanoma, and colorectal cancer, as well as the surgical management of parathyroid disease. The impact of radioguided surgery on the surgical management of cancer patients includes providing vital and real-time information to the surgeon regarding the location and extent of disease, as well as regarding the assessment of surgical resection margins. Additionally, it has allowed the surgeon to minimize the surgical invasiveness of many diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, while still maintaining maximum benefit to the cancer patient. How does the type of thoracotomy affect the patient quality of life? A short form-36 health survey study

PubMedID: 23584276Purpose: We evaluated whether the quality of life was affected in patients who had undergone various types of thoracotomy using the Short Form-36 Health Survey. Methods: The patients who had undergone thoracotomy for diagnosis or treatment between January and September 2011 in the Thoracic Surgery Department were investigated to determine the effect of the type of thoracotomy on the quality of life using the Short Form-36 Health Survey. The patients were classified into three groups. In Group I, the latissimus dorsi and the serratus anterior had both been preserved, and there was no muscle dissection, in Group II the latissimus dorsi muscle had been dissected and only the serratus anterior muscle has been preserved, and in Group III both muscles had been dissected, and the standard posterolateral muscle dissection had been performed. Results: A total of 101 patients comprising 64 males (63.37 %) and 37 females (36.63 %), with a median age of 38 years, were included in this study. There were significant differences in all quality of life subscales between Groups I and III and between Groups II and III. The patients in Group I had the highest scores, while the patients in Group III had the lowest scores. There were no significant differences in five of the eight Short Form-36 subscales and one of the two summary scores values between Group I and Group II in females. Conclusions: We investigated the effect of the type of thoracotomy on the patient quality of life using the Short Form-36 Health Survey, and found that the standard posterolateral thoracotomy had a marked adverse effect on the quality of life compared to muscle-sparing thoracotomy. We also found that it is possible to use thoracotomy with serratus preservation rather than muscle-sparing thoracotomy in cases with benign diseases where a large field of view is required, such as for decortication and pulmonary hydatid cysts, without any significant decrease in the quality of life, especially in females. © 2013 Springer Japan

Prevalence of amebiasis in inflammatory bowel disease in University Clinical Hospital Mostar

AIM: To explore the prevalence of amebiasis in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, in patients in Clinical hospital Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina, region of Herzegovina). METHODS: In this study, Entamoeba histolytica/dispar prevalence was investigated in fresh faeces by native microscopy and immunochromatographic rapid assay “RIDA(®)QUICK Entamoeba test”, in 119 cases of new found IBD patients, 84 of ulcerative colitis and 35 of Crohn’s disease and in control group who had also 119 patients who didn’t have any gastrointestinal complaints. IBD diagnosis was established by standard diagnostic procedures (anamnesis, clinical manifestations, laboratory, endoscopy and biopsy). RESULTS: Entamoeba histolytica/dispar were found in 19 (16.0 %) of a total of 119 cases, 12 (14.3 %) of the 84 patients with ulcerative colitis and 7 (20.0 %) of the 35 patients with Crohn’s disease. As for the 119 patients in the control group who had not any gastrointestinal complaints, 2 (1.7 %) patients were found to have E. histolytica/dispar in their faeces. Amoeba prevalence in the patient group was determined to be significantly higher in group with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and IBD total than in the control group (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Ameba infections in patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, have a greater prevalence compared to the normal population

Perceptions of wheat producers towards risk and risk management strategies: A case study from Turkey [Percepções de produtores de trigo para estratégias de gestão de risco: Um estudo de caso da Turquia]

In this study, risk perception of wheat producers in Turkey was examined based on a case study conducted in Bitlis Province. The data set used in the study was obtained from 157 farmers randomly. Factor analysis was employed to classify risk sources and management strategies, and then multiple regression was used to investigate the relationship between farmers perceptions and some characteristic. Results of this study have shown that economic-based risks were perceived more strongly by farmers. Farmers’ also used more than one risk management strategy to minimize the impact of the risks they face. So, in order to ensure social and economic sustainability and predictability in wheat production and wheat market, the government should be considered preventive policy instruments and interventions to prevent fluctuations in input and output prices. © 2019, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria.
