On Gravitational Radiation in Quadratic Gravity
We investigate the gravitational radiation emitted by an isolated system for
gravity theories with Lagrange density . As a formal result we
obtain leading order corrections to the quadrupole formula in General
Relativity. We make use of the analogy of theories with scalar--tensor
theories, which in contrast to General Relativity feature an additional scalar
degree of freedom. Unlike General Relativity, where the leading order
gravitational radiation is produced by quadrupole moments, the additional
degree of freedom predicts gravitational radiation of all multipoles, in
particular monopoles and dipoles, as this is the case for the most alternative
gravity theories known today. An application to a hypothetical binary pulsar
moving in a circular orbit yields the rough limit by constraining the dipole power to account at
most for 1% of the quadrupole power as predicted by General Relativity.Comment: 14 Pages, 1 Figur
On Gravitational Waves in Spacetimes with a Nonvanishing Cosmological Constant
We study the effect of a cosmological constant on the propagation
and detection of gravitational waves. To this purpose we investigate the
linearised Einstein's equations with terms up to linear order in in a
de Sitter and an anti-de Sitter background spacetime. In this framework the
cosmological term does not induce changes in the polarization states of the
waves, whereas the amplitude gets modified with terms depending on .
Moreover, if a source emits a periodic waveform, its periodicity as measured by
a distant observer gets modified. These effects are, however, extremely tiny
and thus well below the detectability by some twenty orders of magnitude within
present gravitational wave detectors such as LIGO or future planned ones such

Probing the dark matter issue in f(R)-gravity via gravitational lensing
For a general class of analytic f(R)-gravity theories, we discuss the weak
field limit in view of gravitational lensing. Though an additional Yukawa term
in the gravitational potential modifies dynamics with respect to the standard
Newtonian limit of General Relativity, the motion of massless particles results
unaffected thanks to suitable cancellations in the post-Newtonian limit. Thus,
all the lensing observables are equal to the ones known from General
Relativity. Since f(R)-gravity is claimed, among other things, to be a possible
solution to overcome for the need of dark matter in virialized systems, we
discuss the impact of our results on the dynamical and gravitational lensing
analyses. In this framework, dynamics could, in principle, be able to reproduce
the astrophysical observations without recurring to dark matter, but in the
case of gravitational lensing we find that dark matter is an unavoidable
ingredient. Another important implication is that gravitational lensing, in the
post-Newtonian limit, is not able to constrain these extended theories, since

Characteristics and drivers of forest cover change in the post-socialist era in Croatia: evidence from a mixed-methods approach
© 2016, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.Extensive forests in Croatia represent an important biological and economic resource in Europe. They are characterised by heterogeneity in forest management practices dating back to the socialist planned economy of the pre-1991 era. In this study we investigated the difference in rates of deforestation and reforestation in private- and state-owned forests during the post-socialist period and the causal drivers of change. The selected region of Northern Croatia is characterised by a high percentage of privately owned forests with minimal national monitoring and control. We used a mixed-methods approach which combines remote sensing, statistical modelling and a household-based questionnaire survey to assess the rates of forest cover change and factors influencing those changes. The results show that predominantly privately owned forests in Northern Croatia have recorded a net forest loss of 1.8 % during the 1991–2011 period, while Croatia overall is characterised by a 10 % forest cover increase in predominantly state-owned forests. Main factors influencing forest cover changes in private forests are slope, altitude, education structure, population age and population density. The results also show that the deforestation in private forests is weakening overall, mostly due to the continuation of the de-agrarisation and de-ruralisation processes which began during socialism

No effects of GSM-modulated 900 MHz electromagnetic fields on survival rate and spontaneous development of lymphoma in female AKR/J mice
BACKGROUND: Several reports indicated that non-thermal electromagnetic radiation such as from mobile phones and base stations may promote cancer. Therefore, it was investigated experimentally, whether 900 MHz electromagnetic field exposure influences lymphoma development in a mouse strain that is genetically predisposed to this disease. The AKR/J mice genome carries the AK-virus, which leads within one year to spontaneous development of thymic lymphoblastic lymphoma. METHODS: 320 unrestrained female mice were sham-exposed or exposed (each n = 160 animals) to GSM like 900 MHz electromagnetic fields for 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, at an average whole body specific absorption rate (SAR) value of 0.4 W/kg. Animals were visually checked daily and were weighed and palpated weekly. Starting with an age of 6 months, blood samples were taken monthly from the tail. Animals with signs of disease or with an age of about 46 weeks were sacrificed and a gross necropsy was performed. RESULTS: Electromagnetic field exposure had a significant effect on body weight gain, with higher values in exposed than in sham-exposed animals. However, survival rate and lymphoma incidence did not differ between exposed and sham-exposed mice. CONCLUSION: These data do not support the hypothesis that exposure to 900 MHz electromagnetic fields is a significant risk factor for developing lymphoma in a genetically predisposed species, even at a relatively high exposure level
Early neoplastic and metastatic mammary tumours of transgenic mice detected by 5-aminolevulinic acid-stimulated protoporphyrin IX accumulation
A photodynamic technique for human breast cancer detection founded upon the ability of tumour cells to rapidly accumulate the fluorescent product protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) has been applied to transgenic mouse models of mammary tumorigenesis. A major goal of this investigation was to determine whether mouse mammary tumours are reliable models of human disease in terms of PpIX accumulation, for future mechanistic and therapeutic studies. The haeme substrate 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) (200 mg kg−1) was administered to mouse strains that develop mammary tumours of various histological subtypes upon expression of the transgenic oncogenes HRAS, Polyoma Virus middle T antigen, or Simian Virus 40 large T antigen in the mammary gland. Early neoplastic lesions, primary tumours and metastases showed consistent and rapid PpIX accumulation compared to the normal surrounding tissues, as evidenced by red fluorescence (635 nm) when the tumours were directly illuminated with blue light (380–440 nm). Detection of mouse mammary tumours at the stage of ductal carcinoma in situ by red fluorescence emissions suggests that enhanced PpIX synthesis is a good marker for early tumorigenic processes in the mammary gland. We propose the mouse models provide an ideal experimental system for further investigation of the early diagnostic and therapeutic potential of 5-ALA-stimulated PpIX accumulation in human breast cancer patients
Proteotypic classification of spontaneous and transgenic mammary neoplasms
INTRODUCTION: Mammary tumors in mice are categorized by using morphologic and architectural criteria. Immunolabeling for terminal differentiation markers was compared among a variety of mouse mammary neoplasms because expression of terminal differentiation markers, and especially of keratins, provides important information on the origin of neoplastic cells and their degree of differentiation. METHODS: Expression patterns for terminal differentiation markers were used to characterize tumor types and to study tumor progression in transgenic mouse models of mammary neoplasia (mice overexpressing Neu (Erbb2), Hras, Myc, Notch4, SV40-TAg, Tgfa, and Wnt1), in spontaneous mammary carcinomas, and in mammary neoplasms associated with infection by the mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV). RESULTS: On the basis of the expression of terminal differentiation markers, three types of neoplasm were identified: first, simple carcinomas composed exclusively of cells with a luminal phenotype are characteristic of neoplasms arising in mice transgenic for Neu, Hras, Myc, Notch4, and SV40-TAg; second, 'complex carcinomas' displaying luminal and myoepithelial differentiation are characteristic of type P tumors arising in mice transgenic for Wnt1, neoplasms arising in mice infected by the MMTV, and spontaneous adenosquamous carcinomas; and third, 'carcinomas with epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT)' are a characteristic feature of tumor progression in Hras-, Myc-, and SV40-TAg-induced mammary neoplasms and PL/J and SJL/J mouse strains, and display de novo expression of myoepithelial and mesenchymal cell markers. In sharp contrast, EMT was not detected in papillary adenocarcinomas arising in BALB/cJ mice, spontaneous adenoacanthomas, neoplasms associated with MMTV-infection, or in neoplasms arising in mice transgenic for Neu and Wnt1. CONCLUSIONS: Immunohistochemical profiles of complex neoplasms are consistent with a stem cell origin, whereas simple carcinomas might originate from a cell committed to the luminal lineage. In addition, these results suggest that the initiating oncogenic events determine the morphologic features associated with cancer progression because EMT is observed only in certain types of neoplasm
De novo characterization of the gametophyte transcriptome in bracken fern, Pteridium aquilinum
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Because of their phylogenetic position and unique characteristics of their biology and life cycle, ferns represent an important lineage for studying the evolution of land plants. Large and complex genomes in ferns combined with the absence of economically important species have been a barrier to the development of genomic resources. However, high throughput sequencing technologies are now being widely applied to non-model species. We leveraged the Roche 454 GS-FLX Titanium pyrosequencing platform in sequencing the gametophyte transcriptome of bracken fern (<it>Pteridium aquilinum</it>) to develop genomic resources for evolutionary studies.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>681,722 quality and adapter trimmed reads totaling 254 Mbp were assembled <it>de novo </it>into 56,256 unique sequences (i.e. unigenes) with a mean length of 547.2 bp and a total assembly size of 30.8 Mbp with an average read-depth coverage of 7.0×. We estimate that 87% of the complete transcriptome has been sequenced and that all transcripts have been tagged. 61.8% of the unigenes had blastx hits in the NCBI nr protein database, representing 22,596 unique best hits. The longest open reading frame in 52.2% of the unigenes had positive domain matches in InterProScan searches. We assigned 46.2% of the unigenes with a GO functional annotation and 16.0% with an enzyme code annotation. Enzyme codes were used to retrieve and color KEGG pathway maps. A comparative genomics approach revealed a substantial proportion of genes expressed in bracken gametophytes to be shared across the genomes of <it>Arabidopsis</it>, <it>Selaginella </it>and <it>Physcomitrella</it>, and identified a substantial number of potentially novel fern genes. By comparing the list of <it>Arabidopsis </it>genes identified by blast with a list of gametophyte-specific <it>Arabidopsis </it>genes taken from the literature, we identified a set of potentially conserved gametophyte specific genes. We screened unigenes for repetitive sequences to identify 548 potentially-amplifiable simple sequence repeat loci and 689 expressed transposable elements.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study is the first comprehensive transcriptome analysis for a fern and represents an important scientific resource for comparative evolutionary and functional genomics studies in land plants. We demonstrate the utility of high-throughput sequencing of a normalized cDNA library for <it>de novo </it>transcriptome characterization and gene discovery in a non-model plant.</p
