Exact approximation of Rao-Blackwellised particle filters
Particle methods are a category of Monte Carlo algorithms that have become popular for performing inference in non-linear non-Gaussian state-space models. The class of 'Rao-Blackwellised' particle filters exploits the analytic marginalisation that is possible for some state-
space models to reduce the variance of the Monte Carlo estimates. Despite being applicable to only a restricted class of state-space models, such as conditionally linear Gaussian models, these algorithms have found numerous applications. In scenarios where no such analytical integration is possible, it has recently been proposed in Chen et al. [2011] to use 'local' particle filters to
carry out this integration numerically. We propose here an alternative approach also relying on \local" particle filters which is more broadly applicable and has attractive theoretical properties. Proof-of-concept simulation results are presented
Magnetic states of linear defects in graphene monolayers: effects of strain and interaction
The combined effects of defect-defect interaction and of uniaxial or biaxial
strains of up to 10\% on the development of magnetic states on the
defect-core-localized quasi-one-dimensional electronic states generated by the
so-called 558 linear extended defect in graphene monolayers are investigated by
means of {\it ab initio} calculations. Results are analyzed on the basis of the
heuristics of the Stoner criterion. We find that conditions for the emergence
of magnetic states on the 558 defect can be tuned by uniaxial tensile parallel
strains (along the defect direction) at both limits of isolated and interacting
558 defects. Parallel strains are shown to lead to two cooperative effects that
favor the emergence of itinerant magnetism: enhancement of the DOS of the
resonant defect states in the region of the Fermi level and tuning of the Fermi
level to the maximum of the related DOS peak. A perpendicular strain is
likewise shown to enhance the DOS of the defect states, but it also effects a
detunig of the Fermi level that shifts away from the maximum of the DOS of the
defect states, which inhibts the emergence of magnetic states. As a result,
under biaxial strains the stabilization of a magnetic state depends on the
relative magnitudes of the two components of strain.Comment: 9 pages 8 figure
H.E.S.S. observations of galaxy clusters
Clusters of galaxies, the largest gravitationally bound objects in the
universe, are expected to contain a significant population of hadronic and
leptonic cosmic rays. Potential sources for these particles are merger and
accretion shocks, starburst driven galactic winds and radio galaxies.
Furthermore, since galaxy clusters confine cosmic ray protons up to energies of
at least 1 PeV for a time longer than the Hubble time they act as storehouses
and accumulate all the hadronic particles which are accelerated within them.
Consequently clusters of galaxies are potential sources of VHE (> 100 GeV)
gamma rays. Motivated by these considerations, promising galaxy clusters are
observed with the H.E.S.S. experiment as part of an ongoing campaign. Here,
upper limits for the VHE gamma ray emission for the Abell 496 and Coma cluster

Tuberculosis incidence correlates with sunshine : an ecological 28-year time series study
Birmingham is the largest UK city after London, and central Birmingham has an annual tuberculosis incidence of 80 per 100,000. We examined seasonality and sunlight as drivers of tuberculosis incidence. Hours of sunshine are seasonal, sunshine exposure is necessary for the production of vitamin D by the body and vitamin D plays a role in the host response to tuberculosis.
Methods:
We performed an ecological study that examined tuberculosis incidence in Birmingham from Dec 1981 to Nov 2009, using publicly-available data from statutory tuberculosis notifications, and related this to the seasons and hours of sunshine (UK Meteorological Office data) using unmeasured component models.
Results:
There were 9,739 tuberculosis cases over the study period. There was strong evidence for seasonality, with notifications being 24.1% higher in summer than winter (p<0.001). Winter dips in sunshine correlated with peaks in tuberculosis incidence six months later (4.7% increase in incidence for each 100 hours decrease in sunshine, p<0.001).
Discussion and Conclusion:
A potential mechanism for these associations includes decreased vitamin D levels with consequent impaired host defence arising from reduced sunshine exposure in winter. This is the longest time series of any published study and our use of statutory notifications means this data is essentially complete. We cannot, however, exclude the possibility that another factor closely correlated with the seasons, other than sunshine, is responsible. Furthermore, exposure to sunlight depends not only on total hours of sunshine but also on multiple individual factors. Our results should therefore be considered hypothesis-generating. Confirmation of a potential causal relationship between winter vitamin D deficiency and summer peaks in tuberculosis incidence would require a randomized-controlled trial of the effect of vitamin D supplementation on future tuberculosis incidence
Time Dependence of Charge Transfer Processes in Diamond Studied with Positrons
We have developed a method called optical transient positron spectroscopy and apply it to study the optically induced carrier trapping and charge transfer processes in natural brown type IIa diamond. By measuring the positron lifetime with continuous and pulsed illumination, we present an estimate of the optical absorption cross section of the vacancy clusters causing the brown color. The vacancy clusters accept electrons from the valence band in the absorption process, giving rise to photoconductivity.Peer reviewe
Elevated hepatocyte growth factor levels in osteoarthritis osteoblasts contribute to their altered response to bone morphogenetic protein-2 and reduced mineralization capacity
PURPOSE:
Clinical and in vitro studies suggest that subchondral bone sclerosis due to abnormal osteoblasts is involved in the progression of osteoarthritis (OA). Human osteoblasts isolated from sclerotic subchondral OA bone tissue show an altered phenotype, a decreased canonical Wnt/ß-catenin pathway, and a reduced mineralization in vitro as well as in vivo. These alterations were linked with an abnormal response to BMP-2. OA osteoblasts release factors such as the hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) that contribute to cartilage loss whereas chondrocytes do not express HGF. HGF can stimulate BMP-2 expression in human osteoblasts, however, the role of HGF and its effect in OA osteoblasts remains unknown. Here we investigated whether elevated endogenous HGF levels in OA osteoblasts are responsible for their altered response to BMP-2.
METHODS:
We prepared primary human subchondral osteoblasts using the sclerotic medial portion of the tibial plateaus of OA patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty, or from tibial plateaus of normal individuals obtained at autopsy. The expression of HGF was evaluated by qRT-PCR and the protein production by western blot analysis. HGF expression was reduced with siRNA technique whereas its activity was inhibited using the selective inhibitor PHA665752. Alkaline phosphatase activity (ALPase) and osteocalcin release were measured by substrate hydrolysis and EIA respectively. Canonical Wnt/β-catenin signaling (cWnt) was evaluated both by target gene expression using the TOPflash TCF/lef luciferase reporter assay and western blot analysis of β-catenin levels in response to Wnt3a stimulation. Mineralization in response to BMP-2 was evaluated by alizarin red staining.
RESULTS:
The expression of HGF was increased in OA osteoblasts compared to normal osteoblasts and was maintained during their in vitro differentiation. OA osteoblasts released more HGF than normal osteoblasts as assessed by western blot analysis. HGF stimulated the expression of TGF-β1. BMP-2 dose-dependently (1 to 100ng/ml) stimulated both ALPase and osteocalcin in normal osteoblasts whereas, it inhibited them in OA osteoblasts. HGF-siRNA treatments reversed this response in OA osteoblasts and restored the BMP-2 response. cWnt is reduced in OA osteoblasts compared to normal, and HGF-siRNA treatments increased cWnt in OA osteoblasts almost to normal. Smad1/5/8 phosphorylation in response to BMP-2, which is reduced in OA osteoblasts, was corrected when these cells were treated with PHA665752. The BMP-2-dependent mineralization of OA osteoblasts, which is also reduced compared to normal, was only partially restored by PHA665752 treatment whereas 28days treatment with HGF reduced the mineralization of normal osteoblasts.
CONCLUSION:
OA osteoblasts expressed more HGF than normal osteoblasts. Increased endogenous HGF production in OA osteoblasts stimulated the expression of TGF-β1 and reduced their response to BMP-2. Inhibiting HGF expression or HGF signaling restored the response to BMP-2 and Smad1/5/8 signaling. In addition, decreased HGF signaling partly corrects the abnormal mineralization of OA osteoblasts while increased HGF prevents the normal mineralization of normal osteoblasts. In summary, we hypothesize that sustained elevated HGF levels in OA osteoblasts drive their abnormal phenotype and is implicated in OA pathophysiology
Classical approximation to quantum cosmological correlations
We investigate up to which order quantum effects can be neglected in
calculating cosmological correlation functions after horizon exit. As a toy
model, we study theory on a de Sitter background for a massless
minimally coupled scalar field . We find that for tree level and one loop
contributions in the quantum theory, a good classical approximation can be
constructed, but for higher loop corrections this is in general not expected to
be possible. The reason is that loop corrections get non-negligible
contributions from loop momenta with magnitude up to the Hubble scale H, at
which scale classical physics is not expected to be a good approximation to the
quantum theory. An explicit calculation of the one loop correction to the two
point function, supports the argument that contributions from loop momenta of
scale are not negligible. Generalization of the arguments for the toy model
to derivative interactions and the curvature perturbation leads to the
conclusion that the leading orders of non-Gaussian effects generated after
horizon exit, can be approximated quite well by classical methods. Furthermore
we compare with a theorem by Weinberg. We find that growing loop corrections

The TIANSHAN Radio Experiment for Neutrino Detection
An antenna array devoted to the autonomous radio-detection of high energy
cosmic rays is being deployed on the site of the 21 cm array radio telescope in
XinJiang, China. Thanks in particular to the very good electromagnetic
environment of this remote experimental site, self-triggering on extensive air
showers induced by cosmic rays has been achieved with a small scale prototype
of the foreseen antenna array. We give here a detailed description of the
detector and present the first detection of extensive air showers with this
