Neutron Electric Dipole Moment at Fixed Topology

We describe the finite volume effects of CP-odd quantities, such as the neutron electric dipole moment and the anapole moment in the θ\theta-vacuum, under different topological sectors. We evaluate the three-point Green's functions for the electromagnetic current in a fixed non-trivial topological sector in order to extract these CP-odd observables. We discuss the role of zero modes in the CP-odd Green's function and show that, in the quenched approximation, there is a power divergence in the quark mass for CP-odd quantities at finite volume.Comment: 12 pages, revised manuscript to be publishe

Bulk viscosity and the conformal anomaly in the pion gas

    Get PDF
We calculate the bulk viscosity of the massive pion gas within Unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory. We obtain a low temperature peak arising from explicit conformal breaking due to the pion mass and another peak near the critical temperature, dominated by the conformal anomaly through gluon condensate terms. The correlation between bulk viscosity and conformal breaking supports a recent QCD proposal. We discuss the role of resonances, heavier states and large-NcN_c counting.Comment: Revised version accepted in Phys.Rev.Lett. 4 pages, 3 figure

Effective Lagrangian and Topological Interactions in Supersolids

We construct a low-energy effective Lagrangian describing zero-temperature supersolids. Galilean invariance imposes strict constraints on the form of the effective Lagrangian. We identify a topological term in the Lagrangian that couples superfluid and crystalline modes. For small superfluid fractions this interaction term is dominant in problems involving defects. As an illustration, we compute the differential cross section of scatterings of low-energy transverse elastic phonons by a superfluid vortex. The result is model-independent.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure; one reference adde

Weak cooling of the troposphere by tropical islands in simulations of the radiative-convective equilibrium

    Get PDF
We assess whether tropical islands tend to warm or cool the troposphere. To this end, we use idealized simulations of the Radiative‐Convective Equilibrium employing a simulation domain that contains flat tropical islands represented by a land surface scheme. Results show more frequent precipitation over land as coastal breezes establish, and gravity waves triggered by afternoon convection propagating away from the islands. These waves horizontally homogenize density and in doing so communicate convectively‐induced temperature anomalies from the islands onto the ocean. What is the influence of the islands on tropospheric temperature? The diurnal surface warming of the islands tends to push the afternoon convection over land towards a warmer moist adiabat, and along with it, the temperature profile of the troposphere. However, at the same time, drying of the land surface pulls it towards a colder moist adiabat. All in all, we find that islands rather cool than warm the troposphere. More specifically, we obtain a weakly colder domain‐mean troposphere during episodes with a larger share of precipitation over land, or when the prescribed land fraction is increased. In particular, we find that the cooling becomes more pronounced over large islands. Overall, the results indicate that the inability of evaporation to keep up with the daytime surface warming over land, in contrast to the ocean, is of key relevance for understanding land effects on the mean climat

    Glueball enhancement by color de-confinement

    Get PDF
High energy heavy ion collisions lead to the formation of a strong coupling de-confined phase in which the lightest glueballs are numerous and stable. We analyze how their properties manifest themselves in experimental spectra and show that they provide a good signature for color de-confinement.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

    Yukawa Structure with Maximal Predictability

    Get PDF
A simple Ansatz for the quark mass matrices is considered, based on the assumption of a power structure for the matrix elements and the requirement of maximal predictability. A good fit to the present experimental data is obtained and the position of the vertex of the unitarity triangle, i.e. (\bar{\rho},\bar{\eta}), is predicted.Comment: 13 pages, 2 EPS figures, some modifications and references added; version to appear in Phys. Analytic Confinement and Regge Trajectories

A simple relativistic quantum field model with the Yukawa-type interaction is considered to demonstrate that the analytic confinement of the constituent ("quarks") and carrier ("gluons") particles explains qualitatively the basic dynamical properties of the spectrum of mesons considered as two-particle stable bound states of quarks and gluons: the quarks and gluons are confined, the glueballs represent bound states of massless gluons, the masses of mesons are larger than the sum of the constituent quark masses and the Regge trajectories of mesonic orbital excitations are almost linear.Comment: RevTeX, 16 pages, 3 figures and 2 table

Lorentz Anomaly and 1+1-Dimensional Radiating Black Holes

    Get PDF
The radiation from the black holes of a 1+1-dimensional chiral quantum gravity model is studied. Most notably, a non-trivial dependence on a renormalization parameter that characterizes the anomaly relations is uncovered in an improved semiclassical approximation scheme; this dependence is not present in the naive semiclassical approximation.Comment: 7 pages, LaTe

Chiral Perturbation Theory for the Quenched Approximation of QCD

[This version is a minor revision of a previously submitted preprint. Only references have been changed.] We describe a technique for constructing the effective chiral theory for quenched QCD. The effective theory which results is a lagrangian one, with a graded symmetry group which mixes Goldstone bosons and fermions, and with a definite (though slightly peculiar) set of Feynman rules. The straightforward application of these rules gives automatic cancellation of diagrams which would arise from virtual quark loops. The techniques are used to calculate chiral logarithms in fK/fπf_K/f_\pi, mπm_\pi, mKm_K, and the ratio of sˉs\langle{\bar s}s\rangle to uˉu\langle{\bar u}u\rangle. The leading finite-volume corrections to these quantities are also computed. Problems for future study are described.Comment: 14 page

    Wess-Zumino-Witten model off criticality

    Get PDF
We study the renormalization group flow properties of the Wess-Zumino-Witten model in the region of couplings between g2=0g^2=0 and g2=4π/kg^2=4\pi/k, by evaluating the two-loop Zamolodchikov's cc-function. We also discuss the region of negative couplings.Comment: 8 page
