Interplay between pulsations and mass loss in the blue supergiant 55 Cygnus = HD 198478
Blue supergiant stars are known to display photometric and spectroscopic
variability that is suggested to be linked to stellar pulsations. Pulsational
activity in massive stars strongly depends on the star's evolutionary stage and
is assumed to be connected with mass-loss episodes, the appearance of
macroturbulent line broadening, and the formation of clumps in the wind. To
investigate a possible interplay between pulsations and mass-loss, we carried
out an observational campaign of the supergiant 55 Cyg over a period of five
years to search for photospheric activity and cyclic mass-loss variability in
the stellar wind. We modeled the H, He I, Si II and Si III lines using the
nonlocal thermal equilibrium atmosphere code FASTWIND and derived the
photospheric and wind parameters. In addition, we searched for variability in
the intensity and radial velocity of photospheric lines and performed a moment
analysis of the line profiles to derive frequencies and amplitudes of the
variations. The Halpha line varies with time in both intensity and shape,
displaying various types of profiles: P Cygni, pure emission, almost complete
absence, and double or multiple peaked. The star undergoes episodes of variable
mass-loss rates that change by a factor of 1.7-2 on different timescales. We
also observe changes in the ionization rate of Si II and determine a
multiperiodic oscillation in the He I absorption lines, with periods ranging
from a few hours to 22.5 days. We interpret the photospheric line variations in
terms of oscillations in p-, g-, and strange modes. We suggest that these
pulsations can lead to phases of enhanced mass loss. Furthermore, they can
mislead the determination of the stellar rotation. We classify the star as a

Structure and Evolution of Nearby Stars with Planets. I. Short-Period Systems
Using the Yale stellar evolution code, we have calculated theoretical models
for nearby stars with planetary-mass companions in short-period nearly circular
orbits: 51 Pegasi, Tau Bootis, Upsilon Andromedae, Rho Cancri, and Rho Coronae
Borealis. We present tables listing key stellar parameters such as mass,
radius, age, and size of the convective envelope as a function of the
observable parameters (luminosity, effective temperature, and metallicity), as
well as the unknown helium fraction. For each star we construct best models
based on recently published spectroscopic data and the present understanding of
galactic chemical evolution. We discuss our results in the context of planet
formation theory, and, in particular, tidal dissipation effects and stellar

Processing yttrium-barium-copper oxide superconductor zero gravity using a double float zone surface
The effects of processing YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub x} (Y123) superconductor in the near-zero gravity (0g) environment provided by the NASA KC-135 airplane flying on parabolic trajectories were studied. A new sheet float zone furnace, designed for this study, enabled fast temperature ramps. Up to an 18-gram sample was processed with each parabola. Samples of Y123 were processed as bulk sheets, composites containing Ag and Pd, and films deposited on single crystal Si and MgO substrates. The 0g-processed samples were multi-phase yet retained a localized Y123 stoichiometry where a single ground-based (1g) oxygen anneal at temperatures of 800 C recovered nearly 100-volume percent superconducting Y123. The 1g processed control samples remained multi-phase after the same ground-based anneal with less than 45 volume percent as superconducting Y123. The superconducting transition temperature was 91 K for both 0g and 1g processed samples. A 29 wt.% Ag/Y123 composite had a transition temperature of 93 K. Melt texturing of bulk Y123 in 0g produced aligned grains about a factor of three larger than in analogous 1g samples. Transport critical current densities were at or below 18 A/cm{sup 2}, due to the formation of cracks caused by the rapid heating rates required by the short time at 0g. Y123 deposited on single crystal Si and MgO in 0g was 30 vol.% y123 without an anneal. A weak superconducting transition at 80 K on MgO showed that substrate interactions occurred
Recent ASA presidents and ‘top’ journals: observed publication patterns, alleged cartels and varying careers
It has been common for studies presented as about American sociology as a whole to rely on data compiled from leading journals (American Sociological Review [ASR] and American Journal of Sociology [AJS]), or about presidents of the American Sociological Association [ASA], to represent it. Clearly those are important, but neither can be regarded as providing a representative sample of American sociology. Recently, Stephen Turner has suggested that dominance in the ASA rests with a ‘cartel’ initially formed in graduate school, and that it favors work in a style associated with the leading journals. The adequacy of these ideas is examined in the light of available data on the last 20 years, which show that very few of the presidents were in the same graduate schools at the same time. All presidents have had distinguished academic records, but it is shown that their publication strategies have varied considerably. Some have had no ASR publications except their presidential addresses, while books and large numbers of other journals not normally mentioned in this context have figured in their contributions, as well as being more prominent in citations. It seems clear that articles in the leading journals have not been as closely tied to prestigious careers as has sometimes been suggested, and that if there is a cartel it has not included all the presidents
Exploring the performance of resampling strategies for the class imbalance problem
The present paper studies the influence of two distinct factors on the performance of some resampling strategies for handling imbalanced data sets. In particular, we focus on the nature of the classifier used, along with the ratio between minority and majority classes. Experiments using eight different classifiers show that the most significant differences are for data sets with low or moderate imbalance: over-sampling clearly appears as better than under-sampling for local classifiers, whereas some under-sampling strategies outperform over-sampling when employing classifiers with global learning

Improved analysis of bacterial CGH data beyond the log-ratio paradigm
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Existing methods for analyzing bacterial CGH data from two-color arrays are based on log-ratios only, a paradigm inherited from expression studies. We propose an alternative approach, where microarray signals are used in a different way and sequence identity is predicted using a supervised learning approach.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A data set containing 32 hybridizations of sequenced versus sequenced genomes have been used to test and compare methods. A ROC-analysis has been performed to illustrate the ability to rank probes with respect to Present/Absent calls. Classification into Present and Absent is compared with that of a gaussian mixture model.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results indicate our proposed method is an improvement of existing methods with respect to ranking and classification of probes, especially for multi-genome arrays.</p
Steinert's syndrome presenting as anal incontinence: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Myotonic dystrophy (MD) or Steinert's syndrome is a rare cause of chronic diarrhea and anal incontinence. In the presence of chronic diarrhea and fecal incontinence with muscle weakness, neuromuscular disorders such as myotonic dystrophy should be considered in the differential diagnosis.</p> <p>Case Presentation</p> <p>We present the case of a 45-year-old Turkish man with Steinert's syndrome, who was not diagnosed until the age of 45.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In clinical practice, the persistence of diarrhea and fecal incontinence with muscle weakness should suggest that the physician perform an anal manometric study and electromyography. Neuromuscular disorders such as myotonic dystrophy should be considered in the differential diagnosis.</p
